A flimsy attempt to cash in on the 30th anniversary no doubt.

Yeah that thought went through my mind too.

Very disappointing. A pale version of the MacGyver we fans like and know ...Typical of what people would imagine today ,people who probably never watched MacGyver in the late 80s simply because they weren't even born yet...and just want to make money out of it.They definitely lost the spirit.

*sarcasm* Nice photoshopping! As if we wouldn't catch it. lolz

I think they know what they are doing. Sure image & first impression is everything and yet all the diehards have already long purchased their boxsets. We/they are not their target market. It's more about drawing, appeasing and competing with the nouveau boxcover candy 'circa 2015' that is out there now and to accordingly - maximize profits - before they get inevitably (once again) relegated to the discount bins.

Looks like a Nintendo DS package or something. Same old crap, how lame. Seems like a silly idea since anyone interested in the series could pretty easily find the old sets.

CBS-Paramount are set to re-release the MacGyver complete series in a new DVD set on April 7th. It will include the same 39 discs as the original 2007 release as well as the 2 made for TV movies but will be housed in new "shelf friendly" packaging. There is no mention of any extras or enhancements being included in this release.

The full series was first released in 2007 to wide criticism on the poor presentation and inadequate disc protection compared to the previously released individual season box-sets. The original set is still widely available but has been officially discontinued by the studio. While there are no current details about the new packaging other than the below image showing the new artwork, the term "shelf friendly" would indicate a better housing system than the original set.

As of the time of writing have this set available for pre-order at a discounted price of $62.99 USD, down from the normal price of $89.98 USD.

How cool, that on the cover, they put that image of MacGyver on that motorcycle from that one episode. unsure.gif (sarcasm intended).

Seriously? They couldn't have included his Jeep on the packaging? headbutt.gif

If they will release that whole series again, then they aren't propably going to release the blue ray version for a long time, if that new is released just soon. They maybe got bored to the mullet, new packaging doesnt have one.

A mullet and an old fashion jeep is not going to cut it in this day and age. The rule of thumb for a DVD release is to hit the break-even point by the end of the first year of sales. Most DVD titles only have a shelf life of 2-3 years and so time is of the essence. On the other hand, it's slightly misleading (re: false advertising) to represent your feature with an image that has little or nothing to do with the content. (H)airbrushing!? Somebody better call the cops on these clowns ..... nasty.gif

Not all die-hard fans have it on DVD... I know I don't. I won't either until they at least clean up the video quality. The packaging is okay, but not great. I wouldn't buy it. It looks more like an ad for a Micheal Bay movie... EXPLOSIONS EVERYWHERE!!!

We should have a contest on who can make the best DVD cover art, just for the fun of it.

If they've remastered and upgraded the quality of the transfer at all - then it might be worth buying even if it had a chimpanzee riding a tricycle on the cover. But there's no indication that this is anything but a reissue/reboot of the previous sets.

From what ive noticed, there is no additional work which has been done. But for those who dont have it yet, its a great price.

Yeah looks like they photo-shopped his hair in the back. Mac never wore his hair like that. Not even in the 1st season.

The image of MacGyver is taken from the original Season 5 box set cover.

Here you can see both images side-by-side which makes some of the changes quite obvious.

Posted by: Harry1982 7 February 2015 - 05:33 PM
So the blu-ray didn't happend yet. sad.gif . It will come out some day whistle.gif

Posted by: thebugswillbite 20 February 2015 - 02:56 AM
Oh no, that's a pretty disgraceful cover! photoshopped mullet, bike? no tag line. Not to mention it's still not blu-ray. What a shame..

Posted by: denizen 20 February 2015 - 03:13 AM
It could have been better, granted. At least there is some form of release happening. Most shows don't get that luxury.

And with that note, welcome to MacGyver Online, thebugswillbite. smile.gif

Alright kids... decision time. I've decided to break down and buy MacGyver on DVD (unless you guys can give me a good reason not too).

The complete series (old release) and complete collection (new release) are currently being sold on Amazon for about $75. Now the trouble is, I'm trying to figure out which one to purchase...

I'm just curious as to which one you guys would prefer to get if you were in my shoes. I'm kinda learning towards the old release... unless the new release is somehow "better", but I don't think so. I just kinda wanted to hear any thoughts you guys had. Thanks in advance! >_<

Hey Jedi,

The old release is definitely the favorite mostly due to original artwork.

So what makes the new one better?

The packaging. The old one had discs literally stuffed together making it for easy wear.

The new one's oackaging greatly improves on that.

Unfortunately the new one is also a replica of the old one so no new features.

Either way, its the complete series of MacGyver with the two movies.

Posted by: Jediferret 6 May 2015 - 08:52 AM
You can thank Paramount for that. They Photoshopped it off. ohmy.gif

Posted by: Elizabeth MacGyver 6 May 2015 - 08:56 AM
if theres no mullet then it cant be MacGyver, right?

Posted by: Jediferret 6 May 2015 - 01:59 PM
Sure it can! Mac didn't really have a mullet in the first season. lol

Posted by: Elizabeth MacGyver 6 May 2015 - 02:53 PM
Yeah that's true.

Just a quick heads up!

If you didn't know, Amazon are celebrating their 20th Anniversary on July 15th and there are going to be some MAJOR price drops on loads of items.

It now appears that Target are doing the same. I can confirm that MacGyver: The Complete Collection (39 Discs) will be listed at $28.79! No joke!

If you have yet to buy this awesome collection, never has a time been any better. That's the complete series!

Problem is, \Target only ship to US. dry.gif
