LOS ANGELES -- Dana Elcar, whose struggle with glaucoma and blindness was written into the character he was best known for portraying -- think-tank director Peter Thornton on ABC's "MacGyver" -- has died. He was 77.

Elcar died of complications from pneumonia Monday (6 June 2005) at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, his family announced.

Four seasons into playing a character on the adventure series that debuted in 1985, Elcar told producers that he was going blind.

They said, "The fact that you are losing your eyesight does not mean you have forgotten how to act," Elcar said in a 1991 speech to the National Federation of the Blind.

This is such sad news, it's brought a tear to my eye!

I feel so sorry for his family, losing someone so special at what was a relatively young age.

Posted by: rockatteer Jun 10 2005, 11:37 PM
I can't help thinking we should do somethign to let his family know how much we enjoyed his charector in MacGyver.

He was a second main charector.... we shouldn't just let this slide by.

I've put forward an idea on the mailing list of having web page where peopel can post little messages or something....maybe an email address to make it easier...and then somehow getting that to the family.

Does anyone else have any ideas?

Well he was in it right from the start (albeit as another character in the pilot) so he's definitely up there with RDA. MacGyver without Pete would just be unthinkable.

His life and career certainly needs remembering in some form or another.

~~~
Posted by: rockatteer Jun 10 2005, 11:54 PM
Well his career is charted in the bios section of this, and many other sites. But I was thinking more along the lines of some form of condolences to the family....
Thinking on my feet a bit here just before I head of to bed (its 12:30 Saturday morning here in New Zealand)
In case we don’t have any better ideas, I’ve created an email account to send condolence messages to.
I can then transfer the messages into a nice web page layout, then we can work on getting a printed copy of it to the family.
the email account is: dana@macgyveronline.com
Hopefully he finished his days in a happy place.
I can't believe this. *holds for a minute of silence* I never thought he would pass away now. I knew he was old and blind but I never thought of it, to die for him so soon. What can we do? What can I say? Can we keep a chat about this? I don't know. Dana Elcar may be dead, he will always live on in our hearts and Peter Thornton shall live on in our fanfiction stories too. I wonder what Rick's reaction was on this message about Dana's death. He must be so devastated about it. I think they got enough reason now to make a movie and dedicate it to Dana Elcar. But a fully reunion with the originals is now totally forever out of the question  And if that is too much to ask they got put a featurette about Elcar on the dvd's. If they don't do that, those people of Paramount are really sick and do got a problem. Both would be better a movie and extra's.
He meant and still means a lot to us!! Now Rick/Mac is all alone out there. MacGyver without Pete is really unthinkable. I don't know what else to say, it hurts. Try to see it this way: "Death is not the end of anything, it's just another step along the way." I'm sure his eyesight waited for him in heaven. I think I'm going to write a story for him soon, you know dedicating it to him. All I can say now is: Amen!
We'll miss you,
I think this is sad too! Mac without Pete isn't the same.
I like the way they incorporated him going blind. Not many
would have.
I wonder if there is a comment from RDA somewhere about this.
That's really sweet from both of you.
I just watched "BLIND FAITH" and I cried even more along with Mac at the scene when Pete tells Mac he can lose his sight, as I usually do because I had the same thought.
Like my father who had eye cataract, Dana can see now.
more details from “yahoo news” . . .
VENTURA, Calif. - Dana Elcar, the round-faced, balding actor whose real-life struggle with blindness was written into his role on the TV adventure series "MacGyver," has died. He was 77.
He died Monday of complications from pneumonia at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, his family said.
"MacGyver" ran on ABC from 1985 to 1992. Elcar played the best friend and boss of the crime-fighting title character, played by Richard Dean Anderson.
"At a time when I had very little business being called an actor, he made things so easy for me," Anderson said. "It was a learning experience that was very warm and loving for all seven years."
Elcar, who suffered from glaucoma, told producers he was going blind after four seasons with "MacGyver," so they adapted his character to match his medical condition. By the end of the show's run, he had become almost completely blind.
"The fact that you are losing your eyesight does not mean you have forgotten how to act," Elcar, in a speech to the National Federation of the Blind in 1991, recalled producers telling him.
What a sad day. Mac gets an awful lot of glory from the show, as he should, but I think much of the Mac character was squeezed into shape and sharpened by playing off Pete. Their dynamic was one of the best I've seen on the screen and watching Pete's and Mac's friendship grow, deepen and claw it's way through adversity was one of my favorite parts of the show.
Whoa! I can't believe it! This is quite a shock indeed! Unfortunately, so many great actors have passed away in recent years. I'm about as shocked now as I was when I first heard that Christopher Reeve had died. Dana Elcar was there as Pete every step of the way on MacGyver- from the first season to the series finale. He's actually had quite a long career with memorable appearances on such shows as The A-Team, Baretta, Dark Shadows, and numerous others. But he'll forever be remembered as Pete Thornton. We'll miss you Dana.
(P.S. Passing along condolences to the family is a great idea, Rock! The MacGyver community certainly needs to do something to honor him.)
After good news, bad news always follows. My good news was that I've been hired for a summer job and only a few hours later I received this news. Mac and Pete indeed had great chemistry together. Unforgetable!! I always had this things with odd couples opposite character: Mac and Pete, Xena and Gabrielle, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. Mac and Pete's friendship was what kept the show as a whole.
We all can't believe it and it's a shock for all of us. About three years ago another actor I admired died. Kevin Smith, (not the director of Chasing Amy) but the actor who played Ares in Xena. That was quite shocking for me. He was only 38 and on the verge of great breakthrough.
"MacGyver" Boss Dies
by Joal Ryan
Jun 10, 2005, 5:30 PM PT
When Dana Elcar began to lose his eyesight during the fourth season of MacGyver, the actor became as resourceful as the TV show's gadget-handy titular hero, suggesting that his character be allowed to grow blind with him.
Elcar, the familiar prime-time face who enjoyed his longest run as MacGyver's boss Pete Thornton on the 1986-1992 adventure series, died Monday in a Ventura, California, hospital of complications from pneumonia, the Los Angeles Times reported. He was 77.
E! News Live Top5 Videos
Taking up Elcar's invitation, producers wrote in vision problems for Thornton, solving a dilemma for his portrayer.
In a speech to the 1991 convention of the National Federation of the Blind, Elcar said that with glaucoma fast robbing him of sight he told MacGyver executive producer Steve Downing that something had to be done.
"We have to make Pete Thornton have the same qualities, the same visual abilities that I have, or we're going to run into trouble," Elcar said, recounting the conversation. "I can no longer jump out of helicopters. I can't run down hill at night at a fast pace over logs. It simply will not work."
The next day, the actor said, Downing called back. And that was that. The 1991 season closer, "Hind-Sight," saw Elcar's character undergo surgery for glaucoma.
Before becoming a can-do symbol for the vision-impaired, Elcar simply was a busy actor. Though never a leading man, his sturdy, compact build made him the perfect authority figure to a host of exasperating charges in the 1970s and 1980s. He was Richard Dean Anderson's Phoenix Foundation superior on MacGyver, Robert Blake's original lieutenant on Baretta and Robert Conrad's commanding officer on Baa Baa Black Sheep.
In network TV's golden age of the episodic drama, Elcar was ubiquitous. The Internet Movie Database lists 109 guest-starring credits. The Rockford Files, B.J. and the Bear, Eight Is Enough, Knight Rider, Hart to Hart, Hardcastle and McCormick, The A-Team, Trapper John, M.D.--Elcar did them all, and more.
Elcar stood in for the late Edward Platt to play--what else?-- Don Adams' boss in the 1980 Get Smart movie, The Nude Bomb. Other big-screen credits included The Sting and 2010.
Born Oct. 10, 1927, in Ferndale, Michigan, Elcar was inspired to go into acting at age 13 after watching Citizen Kane over and over and over again at an all-night movie theater, his son, Dane Elcar, told the Times.
Elcar's career would go on to span TV's bargain-basement beginnings--a 1954 soap opera, A Time to Live, that aired in 15-minute-long installments--to its big-money prime--a 2002 episode of ER, included.
Even an industry veteran like Elcar, though, worried about what impending blindness would do to his career. "You hear a lot of things about Hollywood, about how hard it is, how cold it is, how mean it is," he said in his 1991 address. "And yet there were people [on MacGyver] who immediately responded and said, '...We want you on the program--you are good for the program.' "
Richard Dean Anderson did not disagree.
"At a time when I had very little business being called an actor," Anderson said of Elcar to the Times, "he made things so easy for me."
It was such a pleasure to have such a talented and adorable actor be an integral part of our favorite series. It means a lot when a person can make such an impact without you never even meeting that person.
Thanks Dana for all your perseverance and compassion....
I understand that, but when I said that I have such plans, doesn't mean right now. On the long terms, I meant. It's indeed too soon. Let's wait for a couple of months to write stories about Pete's death, but we can always dedicate other stories to him. Don't you think we can make a seperate fanfic forum for him?
I can't believe it! I just now saw this on the email list... my net connection was down *again* for quite awhile because of cable upgrades at our townhome community.
I missed the deadline for the messages to Dana's family, but here are a few thoughts anyway.
Dana and Rick worked so beautifully together. Mac may have gotten the glory, but behind every person in the spotlight is a strong, supportive figure (whether it's a family member, friend, etc.) and that's exactly what Pete was to Mac. They had their disagreements from time to time, but they always stayed friends. Pete was a wonderful character, and Mac definitely would not have been Mac without Pete.
I never saw any of Dana's other work, but I *loved* him as Pete, and still do. Hats off to you, Dana, I miss you, and know you're in a good place. Maybe our paths will cross one day, and then I'll be able to tell you all this in person.
<Hmm, what would be a good Pete smiley? Maybe we should add a golf club for Dana!>
Yeah, or a fishing pole! Remember the line "It was just me and the salmon, like a dream come true"?
The day I heard about his death I ended up watching (and it just happened to be the order I was watching, in season order) the episode about Pete losing his site. It made me cry so much and even when his name/picture comes up in the credits I feel a little sad still.
Truly very sad news.  I really cried.
But a very nice idea, Rock to create this e-mail adress.
Dana, möge Dir im Himmel eine wunderschoene Wohnung bereitet und Deine Familie und Freunde getroestet und behuetet sein.
(Dana, may there will be prepared a wonderful home for you in heaven and your family and friends comforted and looked after.)
He was MacGyver's (Rick's) right arm.. They were so close like father and son.. He will definately be missed.. Rest In Peace Dana..
Hard to believe it's been a year already. I miss Dana - he was a good guy.
I feel the same.
Somehow it's hard to believe that certain people don't live forever.
Call it childlike imagination, but Dana is one of those.
That awful day last year, I had just received my season 3, or maybe it was 2
Just reading through your posts brings tears to my eyes.
Dana was such a wonderful man, which came through so well in his acting.
It's so hard to believe it's been a year since he passed away.
To his family & friends, I send my prayers
and say thank you for sharing him with us.
As to the fan fiction discussion,
here's my 2 cents worth.
My first instinct reading your posts was 'why not keep Pete alive?'
Let him live on in your stories as he does in the dvds.
And, as he always will in our hearts.
That would be a wonderful mark of respect for Dana.
That's just my opinion anyway.
Rest In Peace, Dana.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent with us.
We will never forget you.
