I swear, if I have to endure one more episode where Mac is repeatedly pressured into having a good relationship with his dad because "You're going to regret it forever if you don't" or "He's still your dad", I am boycotting this show forever.

I swear, if I have to endure one more episode where Mac is repeatedly pressured into having a good relationship with his dad because "You're going to regret it forever if you don't" or "He's still your dad", I am boycotting this show forever.

I haven't seen the episode yet, but I've read several tweets stating the same and it irks me, too.

I do agree that it eats at Mac not being on speaking terms with his dad; and I understand that the team wants him to get at least on a talking ground so he's not feeling so guilty for cutting him off before they ever talk about their problems (especially since MacDaddy might not be around much longer if he's still having Stage 4 cancer).

BUT... while there's a good reason to have a relationship with his dad, it doesn't mean it has to be a great one. I hate that they always act like Mac is just petty and holding a grudge. This isn't about some little fight. There's some real sh... Mac had go go through due to his dad's decisions; issues he's still suffering from. And the others always act like it's nothing. Yes, it's a good idea for Mac staying in contact with his dad - simply for the reason so Mac can't get off his chest what's eating him. But there's no reason at all he ever needs to forgive him or forget what happened (especially since James still has never apologized for what he did).

It really irks me that they keep glossing over what happened.

To me, it's similar to Riley's relationship with her own dad - she's on speaking terms, they're friendly and civil with each other, but they're never going to be "best friends". She won't ever forget how he treated her mom and that she had to grow up in fear; in a home with an abusive dad with an alcohol problem. The writers have no problem to not gloss over that, so why do they think it has to be done with Oversight? Especially since he's not even a regular character that has to be dealt with in every episode?

I really liked the ending scene with the jacket. Although because of the flashback in 2x04 with Harry wearing it (or a similar version), I've always assumed it's actually his grandfather's jacket.

"Of course I can do every Fortnite dance!" - Bozer, 2020.

I'll admit, I did kinda laugh at the "We bought a parakeet and I got custody" line laugh.gif

Russ casually pushing Mac out of the plane was funny, but at the same time, it bothers me that they had to resort to that dry.gif

The whole Mac/Desi thing made me want to throw something at the tv. If they have to go the stereotypical romance route, at least skip the stereotypical "petty arguing" part. Especially since there are lives at stake. In a real professional workplace, they'd be forced into different organizations to separate them, wouldn't they, given how they're acting? The fact that it took a kid's pleading to shut them up...

When Asher said he had a friend named Jeff who does cool stuff with random items, and he said "We Jeffed it", I don't know if that felt like a callback to the original show or an insult. Don't want to judge, though.

I wish Russ stayed in charge, just for some variety. Matty might be the more "held together" one, but still... and they should've worked that out BEFORE going on more missions dry.gif

Honestly, between the petty fighting and the confusion over who's really in charge, I wouldn't feel very comfortable with these guys protecting my country. I mean, they still get the job done, but.... (Well, that's probably because television tongue.gif )

I felt there was too big a jump between them landing the plane and suddenly having the antidote administered in the hospital. Run time issues, I guess *CoughThatCouldHaveBeenAvoidedIfTheyDidn'tHaveAllThoseBickeringScenesCough*

Desi's line about not having many friends didn't surprise me. I'd be surprised if she did.

Also, I was live-commenting to some friends while watching this episode, and I was complaining about all the phrases people both on the show and fans tweeting about the show use when trying to say Mac needs to get back with his dad. Then Desi got in his face and used every single phrase I complained about...

Let me clarify: I don't mind them trying to tell Mac to let go of any bitterness he's holding. It's that they keep saying he needs to make up with his dad and be nice all together. So from what I've seen, Mac's dad has:

Abandoned him.

Neglected him.

Stalked him from a distance.

Manipulated everyone close to him (minus teammates, since Jack, Riley, and Bozer didn't know. But Matty did.)

Still didn't treat him right up close.

Tried to act like they should just go have lunch and sweep the past away.

Allowed an entire team to die just to save his son.

Never apologized/seems quick to excuse himself.

And everyone still thinks Mac's being petty?

What rubs me the wrong way is how people (both characters on screen and some people on twitter) say "Mac's mad because his dad saved his life?" No, he's mad because his dad let innocent people die to save his life. And then there's the comments that say "But that's what parents are supposed to do, sacrifice everything for their child!" Uh, no. Parents are supposed to do that, but that doesn't automatically excuse them from any crime/sin commited just because "They did it for their kid". And given the fact that Oversight did that, he really shouldn't be working with the team his son is on. It means emotions are clouding judgement, and that's not good when you're tasked with saving thousands of lives every day. It's one thing to have empathy because of his reasoning, but it's really not good to excuse him.

Anyway, we can probably all guess that Mac's going to suddenly be all nice to his dad, just before he dies, and he and Desi are going to somehow be all in love again because TYPICAL SOAP ROUTINE.

Rant over, you can come out from hiding now smile.gif

I felt on the other episodes this season as well that they must have cut for time before.

Also, in the Press Release, there was a child actor listed as "Little Boy Mac". I'm sure they filmed a flashback scene (e.g. maybe to do about Mac's fear of heights?) and we didn't even get to see it dry.gif

They did the same with Cassians first appearance (on 2x04 I think), but it was put as a deleted scenes onto the DVD Extras. I really hope they either use the flashback for another episode or they at least bother to give us Extras for the Season 4 DVD.

I thought the episode was fine, though I agree about the Mac/Desi thing. Desi comes off as petty and a nitpicker. Mac's love for 80's music? Really? Got to go with Mac on this one laugh.gif laugh.gif Of course, this is all indicative of other problems they were having, but why is Mac always on the defensive? Doesn't seem like she'd be easy to live with huh.gif I just hope the bickering is over.

I totally agree with your reasoning. I feel letting go of bitterness is the best thing one can do for oneself, but that doesn't mean Mac doesn't have reasons for feeling as he does.

I did like the last scene with the jacket. And Phil Collins playing in the background made it all the more sweet! thumbup.gif

While Mac was correct about Phil Collins, the petty bickering is a bit much...at least during the mission proper. Doesn't make either characters look good either.

I'm pretty much in agreement with everyone else on the dad stuff. They're acting as if this is Pete or Nikki trying to break MacGyver out of his funk in "The Widowmaker."

Should Mac make peace with his dad before his inevitable passing? Probably, but it needs to be along the lines of, as someone said, what Riley's relationship with Elwood is. Too many bridges have been burned otherwise.

Other than that, another solid episode. It's just unfortunate that the writers and producers seem to think the bickering and dad stuff is what the fans want. unsure.gif

Really enjoyed this episode. The MacHacks came think and fast, felt they could have added more scientific (CSI style) explanations. I could have done without the “JEFF” reference, didn’t like that!! Love the Phil Collins music at end, more of this please.

I thought it was funny tongue.gif

Though at the same time, I thought if Jack would have done the same or not. I'd think yes if Mac asked him to do it.

Generally, it's even more clear now that they made Russ another version of Jack. Talking about Star Wars, 80s references, clashing with Matty (who's just exasperated often when talking to him) and meddling with Mac's relationship with his father... it's very similar to what Jack would do. I like Ian and his portrayal of Russ, but it still makes me miss Jack and it's annoying they never even mention his name.

Best episode so far in season 4. A little throwback to Final Approach with the pilot having a heart attack. I also felt a little bit of GX-1 vibes in this one.

It's a bit difficult to connect to the dots to season 3 as I read here the team thinks MacGyver is petty because of what happened with his dad. It's there but it's very vague, the memories. But with what people say about Mac being pressured into a good relationship with his dad... I think it shows the team cares for him. Sometimes I think it sort of depends on the situation. They may have left Riley alone about her father because they care for her but sometimes the opposite is needed and I think that's the case with Mac and his dad. He needs that push because they care for him.

Speaking of pushing. Matty clearly hasn't lost her spark yet as there was once more a moment in which she tells the team to hurry up. This is one of the main reasons why I didn't like Matty in the beginning. All that hurry up and don't argue with her still doesn't sit well with me nor it would be with the original Mac.

When it comes to the banter between Mac and Desi? What are they like five if even a kid has to tell them to shut up? It's actually not even funny. They also shouldn't stretch out so long. Their relationship failed and that's that. No reason to argue about their shortcomings. They think Mac is petty in the matter with his dad? The stereotypical romance is petty.

Mac being pushed out of the plane was funny but it does make me wonder about one thing of our original Mac. Our Mac climbed mountains, jumped out of planes but seemed to be bothered of lowering himself under the car in Cease Fire or jumping on the cargo in The Stringer. Isn't it like all between his ears. Somebody with a fear heights will not climb a mountain like The Widowmaker or jump out of airplanes with a parachute.

I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver.
Sometimes you just have to die a little inside to be reborn and rise again as a stronger and wiser version of you.
It's better to be a little sad than to be fake content.
