yep, bare in mind though that MacGyver was the most expensive TV show being made at the time.

I have no doubt that MacGyver was a very expensive show to shoot. And I never realized this about the episode GX-1 until my husband pointed it out. I thought it was interesting to note.

The planes in the aerial sequence are Northrop F-5 (as soviet Mig) and McDonnell Douglas F-15 (as GX-1). This things happen, i see not way to make this type de shots for a TV show without use external footage.

True.

Getting hold of Navy planes and pilots to fly them in sequenced scenes would be a bit beyond the resources of an 8 day TV schedule and budget.

The hot-air balloon was inventive, but I doubt that it would have worked. My main concern was the type of fuel used. Mac used oxy-acetylene from the welding tanks. Hot air balloons are fueled with propane that is turned into a vapor before being ignited by the burners. The burners are essential in creating the extreme heat needed for lift. Macs balloon didn't even have burners. Besides that, getting a balloon filled for takeoff is quite a chore without the aid of a fan. It can be done manually by flapping the sides to get air in the balloon, but this is difficult and requires many hands. It is my favorite Macgyverism, but I'm doubting the feasibility of it.
