MacGyver Online Forums > General Reboot Discussions > Where will Henry Ian Cusick fit into MacGyver?

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 30 August 2019 - 04:55 AM
Henry Ian Cusick has joined the full-time cast of MacGyver for season 4, but what will his role be within the show?

The team already has it's 2 main leads in MacGyver and Jack Dalton's hand-picked replacement, Desi and the writers have already proven they struggle with having 4 characters plus the weekly guest spot, which begs the question of why and how they intend to fit Ian into the picture.

The obvious position would be taking over the Oversight role. We can presume since there have been no sightings of Tate on set at all this season, that MacGyver's father has succumbed to his stage 4 cancer and is no longer in the show which would leave the way for Ian's character to step in and give them room for the writers to breath since he wouldn't need to be in every episode or be a main character, which is good since history has shown us they struggle with the multiple characters aspect of the show.

Other option could be that Matty moves up to the Oversight role and Ian's character takes over as director of Phoenix operations.

So what's everyone else think? How do you see the show working this season?

Hi all, new to the forum here as I’m a fan of Ian’s and with this being his newest role, am looking forward to seeing him in MacGyver.
He seems to have been shooting scenes in every episode so far but his fans still know only a little about his character. The oversight role sounds though like it could be a possibility, unless his role will be something entirely new in the show. Could that be a possibility too?
I’ll admit I have not watched the reboot of the show at all although both my husband and I were regular viewers of the original series with RDA.
I want to familiarize myself with the new show though before the new season begins. Should I watch just the prior season or start with season one? Will watching all seasons be necessary in your opinion?

Hi Kathy,

Great to have you onboard here. biggrin.gif

I personally think you could probably get away with just watching the previous season to get a feel for the show.

Of course, if you want an understanding of the MacDalton* dynamic and the changes which happened recently with George Eads leaving the show etc, you'd need to go back to season 2 at least

*MacDalton is the nickname given to the dynamic between the two main characters of MacGyver and Jack Dalton.

Not sure if it will hold up - news outlets have been wrong about Isabel Lucas' character Samantha Cage back then as well - but for a recap, here's a screenshot of all the information about the character via Deadline (June 28): https://deadline.com/2019/06/macgyver-henry-ian-cusick-cast-cbs-series-season-4-1202639636/

I think if James temporarily stepped down as Oversight or died, Matty would be the most logical decision to become Oversight.

I think they could go the same route with Samantha Cage in the Season 2 premiere - Phoenix has to help Russ with a mission, they realize he could be an addition to the team, and stays.

I'm curious about the credits, too. Tristin Mays was 2nd in the opening credits. Now that both Levy and Ian are reguilars, it will be interesting where they stand. According to other news outlets, it sounds like Ian will be the new co-lead and I don't really understand why they wouldn't have made Tristin the new co-lead - or Levy, since she actually stepped in as Jack's "replacement"...
