MacGyver interview: Lucas Till previews high-stakes, exciting season 4

MacGyver season 4 is premiering this Friday on CBS, and we’re already getting a good sense that these upcoming episodes are awesome. They’re going to be everything you loved about the first three seasons and more, as we are going to see more continuous stories, great drama, but also humor, undercover missions, and high stakes. There are 22 episodes coming up that should be the perfect evolution of Angus MacGyver’s journey.

Why are we so confident? Largely, because Lucas Till is! We spoke with him about the new season this week and he was very enthusiastic about the storylines, the mixture of genres, and getting to work with new series regular Henry Ian Cusick as Russ Taylor. Check out our interview with Lucas below.

CarterMatt – Was it weird this year not being able to watch the show play out while filming a lot of episodes? I know you’re deep in now.
Honestly, it was pretty demoralizing (laughs). I was actually able to get some of the episodes ahead of time and watch them — unfinished, but still. I was like ‘wow! These are really good.’ It used to be nice to just watch them as we went along. We haven’t been able to do that this year, but it’s been great since we’ve been able to take more time and finish them in post-production. I really think they’re going to be well-received!

At the time that you started filming last summer, you really thought you were only doing 13 [episodes], right?
Yeah. I thought that this could be my last season with 13. It was weird — I had wrapped my head around doing 22 [at first after the renewal], then wrapped my head around doing 13, and now we’re doing 22 again (laughs). It’s the most fun that I may have had on any job in my entire life now. We’ve really hit a nice groove and it comes through in the work. I liked it before, but it’s even better this year in every way.

Is a part of that just because you’ve got a good rapport with everyone after the past few years?
YES. That’s exactly what it is. We’re finally getting the show to where I imagined it would be in terms of how it looks. We’re perfectly balanced between action, drama, and comedy. We’re funny, but the stakes are high now.

At the end of season 3, Mac lost someone he cared about in Charlie. Is that something that’s still weighing on him?
Oh, you’re going to see a lot of that emotional toll this season. We have this one amazing, funny episode that is right before things get super-serious. We have a really big bad guy this season and we’re a little more serialized, especially with the first thirteen. It’s something that people are going to want to pay attention to over time instead of missing one and not having to worry about it. For the first thirteen, you’re going to want to stick around and see what happens.

Back at the end of season 3, are you meeting with the writers and getting a good sense of what could be coming up or sharing what you’re hoping to see next?
I find out in July when we start shooting. Peter [Lenkov] knows what he is doing and [new co-showrunner] Terry Matalas really knows what he is doing. They throw the ball and I catch it. I just like to positively reinforce what they’re already doing since it’s hard to write a 22-episode season.

I’m so excited for Henry Ian Cusick coming on board — a part of that is the massive Lost fan in me, but I’ve loved a lot of the stuff he’s done. What does he bring to the show this year?
He’s so great, man. He’s immediately become a part of the family and he’s everything you would want from someone coming in to be a series regular. There’s no attitude, all talent, and really fun to be around. The character that he is playing (Russ) is manic. He’s got Pareidolia, where you see patterns in everything. Sometimes, it helps you with the job. Other times, it’s paranoia.
When I found out about him joining the show, I was on a cruise in Alaska and was like ‘why do I know this guy?’. My buddy was a huge Lost fan and he was like ‘dude, you don’t know Desmond?! It’s sacrilege!’. A lot of people loved him. Tristin [Mays] was like ‘oh my God, I get to work with Desmond?’. He’s so good.

The trailer for the start of the season shows almost a Professor MacGyver as he’s teaching. Is there a different energy there?
There’s a little bit different energy! Everything has just become better. There’s more detail, more layers, and more everything without sacrificing anything that people liked about it previously. That’s my takeaway and how I describe it to people.

Is there any real time in here to address Mac’s personal life? I can’t even imagine the idea of having friends or dating outside of the Phoenix with everything that he’s got going on.
It’s something that I can relate to. Doing the show is the exact same amount of hours. There is no time for anything — I get to see my family because I’m in Atlanta, but it’s highly relatable.
We do touch on it — I just don’t know if we’re going to explore an outside life, because there is none (laughs). It’s really funny how art imitates life sometimes.

So are there some familiar faces who will be coming back on the show from the past?
Tate Donovan is definitely coming back — there are some other familiar characters, but I don’t want to ruin the surprise.

One of my favorite parts of the show is the Bozer – Mac relationship, especially since it was something that existed beyond the Phoenix at first. Will we get to see more of that?
We do a little bit of it — we just shot some of it, actually. We have some important stuff — it’s hard answering questions sometimes because we can’t actually say anything.

You said earlier that you were worried this could be the final season with 13 episodes — now that it’s 22, are you feeling more confident?
Yeah. It’s up to CBS, but they gave us a full order after saying that they were only giving us thirteen. It’s a pretty good sign. That’s what we were — CBS was like ‘no, you’re not getting a full season — just kidding! This was the plan the entire time because we knew you were that good!’ (laughs.) That’s how I’m feeling.

Do you get to do a lot of undercover stuff this season? I’m sure that’s fun as an actor — you kinda get to play a few different characters while also still working with the same people!
This season I’ve gotten to speak Portuguese, I did a big ‘ol chunk of German earlier this year — I was a Russian cop the other day (laughs). It’s so much fun. We get to do so many different things this season.

I know over on Hawaii Five-0 we’ve seen Alex [O’Loughlin] do some directing. Is that something that you’ve been looking at or thinking about?
It’s one of those things where I don’t think I ever would unless it’s two seasons from now. I’d want to be really prepared. The crew really wants me to direct — the camera crew have been like ‘we’ll walk you through the stuff you don’t think you’re confident in.’ Even Ian Cusick was like ‘you’re going to be fine. I did it twice on [The 100].’
It’s something that I’ve thought about, but it’s a lot and when I’m on hiatus, the last thing I’m doing is thinking about work (laughs). You’d have to shoot your episode first so you could prep it right off the bat, and that would require some extra prep time.

What I gathered from the extended MacGyver promo so far:

'MacGyver': Lucas Till Says Season 4 Is 'Firing on All Cylinders' -- Watch the Opening Scene! (Exclusive)

A lot has changed on CBS' MacGyver.

Eighteen months have passed since the Phoenix Foundation was dismantled and the team, led by the uber-resourceful Angus "Mac" MacGyver, was forced to abandon their secret agent statuses for boring, ordinary day jobs. For Mac, that means teaching a chemistry class at a local university, which is exactly where he finds himself in the season four premiere.

"Everybody is broken up because the Phoenix is dissolved and none of us have really been in contact that much over the last 18 months," MacGyver star Lucas Till tells ET as he sets the table for the new season, adding that things aren't looking good for Mac and his father (Tate Donovan) or his ladylove and fellow colleague, Desi (Levy Tran).

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to surmise that Mac is desperately lacking motivation and, as Till puts it, is "uninspired" in his new reality, as one can see in ET's exclusive sneak peek of season four's opening scene (watch above). But as the season progresses, the former operative matures in significant ways.

"You see Mac grow up in his way of thinking," says Till, 29. "'You can't save everybody,' is what part of the season turns into and it's not just black and white. There's not just good and bad, and that's what the season becomes in the first 13."

Till also previewed the addition of new series regular Henry Ian Cusick, who plays Russ Taylor, a wealthy ex-MI6 Agent-turned-private military contractor with a shady past, who comes into the picture when he hires Mac and the team for a high-risk mission. Mac and Russ, Till reveals, have a complicated relationship, to put it lightly.

"You'll see Russ and Mac butt heads, be friends, come to agreeances, fight like an old married couple at points and then have each other's backs," he says, before praising Cusick's work so far. "He's done killer backstory stuff. He's just knocked them out of the park and so does everyone else."

But what about Mac and Desi's romantic future? Is there hope for the former couple to reconcile?

"I'm about to shoot an episode coming up where their relationship is very funny. It's really, really good how they bounce off of each other and it's so easy to work with [Levy]," Till hints. "Personally, I would love to have that continue because it's really nice to getting to work with her every day."

Though Till is in the thick of production -- they're two-thirds of the way through already -- he offered up some of his favorite upcoming arcs of the season, specifically calling out episode 13, which they treated as a season finale. "There is definitely an end to a storyline," he says coyly.

"Episode seven is a date night episode and it's hilarious," Till promises, adding that that particular hour falls just before "things start to take a darker turn... and we do stuff we've never done on this show before. I can't tell you what that is because there are a lot of surprises."

Overall, Till characterizes season four as being "better," and looks and feels "more mature."

"The beats, we hit them," he says. "Everyone's firing on all cylinders. We have all kinds of new stuff, but at the same time, it doesn't really take anything away from the people who would have loved it before. It's still a family show but just a little better."

MacGyver premieres Friday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.

Henry Ian Cusick on MacGyver Debut: I've Never Had More Fun With a Role

Mac is back this Friday, and he’s acquired a new frenemy, played by Lost alum Henry Ian Cusick.
This Friday at 8/7c, the Peruvian-born Scot joins CBS’ MacGyver for Season 4 as Russ Taylor, an MI6 agent-turned-private military contractor who recruits former members of the shuttered Phoenix Foundation to hunt down a bioweapon that a mysterious organization plans to deploy in a devastating attack on a major U.S. city.
If it sounds a bit harrowing, rest assured that Cusick is here (and quite thrilled) to lighten things up, as he details in this TVLine Q&A.

TVLINE | Off the top of your head, give me three adjectives to describe Russ Taylor.
Millionaire… MI6… scoundrel. I think because we [prior to the interview] were discussing Scandal, that’s why I said scoundrel. But there is some truth to that!

TVLINE | Under what sort of circumstances do we first meet him?
Russ Taylor has been following MacGyver, and MacGyver catches onto this and says, “Why are you following me?” Russ Taylor has a reputation — he used to be an arms dealer and do lots of terrible things – so Mac says, “Why would I want to work with you?” Russ says that he has had an epiphany and “changed his ways,” that he wants to be one of the good guys now. Mac’s suspicious, but then they go on a little adventure together. But what’s really cool is that because he recruits Mac, Mac then has to recruit his team.

TVLINE | He’s got to “get the band back together.”
Exactly, and it’s always fun to see where “the band” has gone and what sort of jobs they’re now doing using their talents. But then you learn about Russ and what his true motives are, and why he really asked Mac to help him.

MacGyver CusickTVLINE | As Mac introduces him to the other team members, does Russ share any specific dynamics with any of them?
Well, Matilda [“Matty”] is crucial to the running of Phoenix, and yet here is Russ Taylor, who bought Phoenix. Only one of them is needed, but one owns the whole thing, so they’re sort of loggerheads pretty much through the whole season, which is quite fun. The thing about Russ is even though he’s a skillful manipulator and he can read people very well, and he’s also ex-military, so he’s quite lethal. I have had more fun playing this character than I have had with anything in television.

TVLINE | From the scenes I’ve seen, it looks like you’re having a blast.
He is quite ridiculous, in a way, and it’s a very free environment to work in. When I first turned up for my first scene, Justin Hires (who plays Bozer) just started improvising, and I just looked at him and joined in. I mean, not hugely, but we’d do a few takes and then sort of mess around with a few lines.

TVLINE | You were like, “Ohhhhh, so that’s what we’re doing.”
Yeah, there’s a little banter, a playfulness about the performances. And Justin is very funny, he’s a comedian actor. I took his lead and I’m having a lot of fun bouncing off him. We play the complete opposite of characters, but we have a lot of fun with him teasing me about my accent.

TVLINE | It’s great you get to use your real accent, because we once spoke about how I missed it in the original Scandal pilot.
Right. Right. Yeah, this time, I’m playing myself, my accent, but it’s a bit more cleaned up. It’s pretty much what you hear now, but it may be a little more cleaned up.

TVLINE | Tease best you can Russ’ true motive, because it sounds like we’re getting into some sort of National Treasure/Indiana Jones/Da Vinci Code type of adventure.
This season is more serialized if not less procedural, so we have one archenemy running all the way through it, and the archenemy is Codex. Russ Taylor has a long history with Codex, and that’s one of the reasons he signed Mac up to his team, to get to Codex. We also have a lot of great guest stars coming in — I was very impressed with the people that they bring into the show — and there’s a different tone to it. Even though it’s still fun family drama, it’s a bit darker from previous seasons. I’ve seen clips while doing ADR, and some of it looks really glossy and shiny…. It’s looking really good, I think.

TVLINE | What is something that you, as an actor, have gotten to do for the first time in this role?
What have I not done before…? I was hoisted up through a glass ceiling, which we just did that the other day. [Laughs] I didn’t actually go through it, but it looks like I do. I’m also getting to do a little more fighting, a little more punching, a little bit more gun stuff…. But overall what I’m getting to do is comedy, which I’ve not done on TV before. I feel very light in the show, and I mean that in a sense of having fun. Everything I’ve done before has always been really earnest and….

TVLINE | Russ is more of a dashing rogue.
Yeah, I have to say it’s very freeing as an actor to play this character, very freeing, because basically I can really do anything, and they’ll just say, “Take it down, Ian, you’re going to big,” which is very rare for me because I always play small.

I’m not impressed with the new opening titles. It is missing the iconic music theme, it is missing hands / MacHack references, it is missing explosive stuff 🧨 While I do prefer the re-working of the new theme, I can’t help but feel we’ve moved away from being MacGyver to looking and feeling more like Avengers. Do you agree or disagree? Love to hear others opinions.

I'm excited for the new season after seeing months of BtS material. But I already know there's a lot of stuff I will absolutely hate
