We all know that MacGyver was a bit of a health nut and we sometimes saw him using home made or natural remedies and even some MacGyverisms such as mixing sodium thiosulfate & water to make cold packs in Split Decision which got me thinking that it might be interesting, and helpful, if we listed some of our own MacGyverisms we use to help stay healthy and well.

Home made Flavored Water

If you're like me and prefer your water to have some flavor but don't like cocktail of sugars and preservatives found in store brought flavored water, here's an easy way to make your own healthier flavored water at home.

Simply cut an orange or other citrus fruit in half. Juice it on a hand juicer dish and pour the juice into your drink bottle before filling it with fresh water. Give it a mix before drinking and you'll have a slight orange flavor through your water similar to the purchased drinks.

Obviously you'll need to experiment a little to see how much juice is required to suit your tastes remember that less is better because all sweet fruits have a certain amount of sugar in them so this isn't a sugar free drink, but it is natural sugar and is far less than any purchased drink will have and you can eat the remaining fruit flesh after you've juiced it so you get a snack as well.

You may also want to use a strainer to collect any pulp which might pour into your bottle.

I've found that oranges will stay fresh in the refrigerator for a least a couple of weeks so you don't have to keep running to the store for fresh oranges for your water.

I've heard that orange peels themselves are a pick me up in the winter- by bending an orange peel- a fine citrus mist comes out- refreshing in the winter- an aromatherapy if you will

I remember on Target MacGyver Mac used a combination of Clay and Pyrite (Fool's Gold) as a natural remedy for Harry's gunshot wound.

Not all natural remedies are MacGyverisms though. Many are just medication substitutes, which is not what this discussion is about.

We're looking for MacGyverisms (home improvisations) around health and wellness.

OK, no worries smile.gif
Where are you drawing the line though? A lot of natural remedies or home recipes for health and wellness stuff are medication substitutes, after all.

Example: I would think that making your own antiseptic from marigold flowers, vodka and a pair of old tights has enough kitchen chemistry about it to please MacGyver, but what you've actually made is Calendula tincture, which you can buy in shops and which is definitely a medication substitute...

I'm not trying to be awkward, I just think I might still have hold of the wrong end of the discussion stick! unsure.gif

The line would be something which is not a MacGyverism or improvisation.

You've made a home-made version which is what we're talking about. If you walked into a store and brought it already made up it's not a MacGyverism.

The key word here is MacGyverism

That's a great idea. I often drink lemon-aded water in the summertime. Sometimes I freeze it the night before and let in thaw during the day for extra refreshment if mowing the lawn or at the tennis court etc. One thing I've noticed since I 've quite caffeinated drinks is that my taste/thirst for real, pure water returns to what it once was.

OK, how about avoiding the cocktail of assorted nasties found in shop bought cough syrup by making your own?

(Camera pans around the houseboat kitchen and lights upon an onion, some brown sugar, the other leg of the antiseptic-making tights and a washed out jar on the sink...)

Peel the onion and cut into flat slices.
Layer it in the jar with equal thickness layers of the sugar (a bit like making a lasagne) and leave for 24 hrs.
By then the juice in the onion will have mixed with the sugar to make a syrup.
Strain the resulting goop throught the foot of the tights into a suitable container.
Store it in the fridge, first removing Jack's store of batteries.

The flavour is a little... unusual... blink.gif but it makes for good cough syrup!

Do the tights add anything to the concoction or are they purely for straining? i.e. a normal strainer could be used for those of us who don't have tights laying around the house?

You could use a strainer if it's the fine plastic mesh kind. A metal one will make the syrup taste a bit funky...

The tights make a really fine strainer, much finer than an ordinary one and better for filtering bits out of home brew concoctions. A jelly bag, a piece of net curtain or similarly loose weave fabric works just as well. smile.gif
