As Mr. Brown said, the value of the SSCS piece of rope from the ship may be lost on some who are not familiar with the details of SSCS campaigns...

But I spent 3 months on the Steve in the Antarctic and something as simple as a rope can make the difference between success and failure in stopping the Japanese harpoon ships and saving a whale. It can make the difference between successfully deploying a small boat into troubled waters or a failed attempt resulting in injury. It makes refueling the damaged and crippled Brigitte Bardot possible in the middle of nowhere so she can make it to land safely. It makes food and fuel transfer on the ocean from the Bob Barker possible.

I have seen everything described above. I have been at both ends of that rope. I have held onto the rope for dear life as we all froze on the deck trying to deploy or dock the delta boats in pitch black night, I was on the boat being lowered onto the ocean and putting my life in the hands of those handling those ropes.

For those following the activity of SSCS and for those who have watched Whale Wars that rope holds a lot of meaning. For those like me it holds a lot of memories.

It's not a rope. It's a hundred stories braided together.

xo
A.

QUOTE (legends @ 1 February 2014 - 04:45 PM)
Time to respond to some of the comments on here about the auction.

MacGyver items: We are still awaiting receipt of the items from RDA which is why you are not seeing them yet. There have been personal reasons at his end as to why they have not been sent out. We are still hoping this will happen before the end of the sale on the 11th but this is something unforeseen and beyond our control.

Website: I regret that the website is not to your liking but we are restricted in the design and 'look' of the site by virtue of the structure of the auction software that we are using. If we could give the site more pizazz, then we would do so. Nevertheless, it is functional and it does the job.

SSCS rope: This may seem a trivial item to some, but there are many people who want to support Sea Shepherd and owning a little piece of something that was used on one of the ships means a lot to them. Perhaps the significance of how that piece of rope was used maybe lost on some people.

Stargate jacket: That item is being added to the auction this week. We still have many items to list and shall be doing so each day.

SSCS charity: This auction is intended to help raise funds for Sea Shepherd and we are including as much variety as we can. As Richard Dean Anderson is so closely tied to SSCS, we are trying to include items relating to him that may be of interest to his fans. That includes series such as Stargate, Legend and MacGyver. If we had more MacGyver items then they would certainly be included. As I said earlier, we're hoping that Richard's package arrives soon.

Regardless of the complaints, we appreciate your interest in the auction.

Paul Brown
Legends Memorabilia

Hi Paul,

I'm always a bit concerned about 'shill bidding' within sites that do not have sufficient feedback &/or bidder profiles available. I don't see anything mentioned about it within your rules & regulations. Can you say a few words about your stand on the practice and how it's best monitored?

Thanks in advance and best of luck with your auction - you have some really great items up for grabs!!!!

I expect the closing price will be well in excess of the cost of tickets to fly to his appearance from anywhere in the world, however it may not meet the extra costs of accommodation while there. wink.gif

.... macgyver it & couchsurf. wink.gif

At any rate there seems to be a few overzealous bidders placing lofty proxy bids(unofficial reserves?) on several items. This is something that's almost never done on Ebay, at least by savvy bidders/colletors .... unless of course they have money to burn and/or have a personal interest in upping the ante.

Not sure how a proxy is an unofficial reserve? Proxy is just automatic bidding up to you're chosen amount. The reserve is the minimum price the seller wants the bidding to reach before they will let the item go. Seems like two completely different things to me.

Well, on Ebay it works like this..... A low starting bid, no reserve auction is sure to attract the most attention and associated salivating. Now everybody is champing at the bit for (say) that signed RDA nugget. Done, instant frenzy starting at $9.99 Wow ,,,,,,,

But I want to get at least a $1000.00 for that knife ..... so I open another account and place a proxy bid for $999.00 and if somebody outbids me for that (for all intents & purposes) 'reserve' - they're welcome to it. If not and I inadvertently win it myself, I can either file a nonpaying bidder claim & relist it or buy it off myself and again relist it at a later date & until I get the price I want. Got it?

I'm not saying that this is the case at all with this charity auction .... but there's a number of routine checkpoints that one usually goes through before placing a bid including checking all feedback of both the seller and they're history of bidders plus their bidding rules & regulations (if any) and with this particular auction site/format any due diligence as such seems much harder to carry out.

I see what you mean. That would be a lot of work on places like ebay where they have multiple checks in place for fake accounts.

I questioned to myself when I first saw the sea shepard site "Why didn't they just do it through eBay?" They would have gotten a much larger audience and probably a bigger bidding pool.

It will be interesting to see how many items bidder:jellytot1965 actually buys. He/She seems to have extremely eclectic tastes, deep pockets, and a very, very itchy bidding finger. hmm.bmp

RDA's personal Legend crew jacket is up for auction.

Sadly though this is the last item of the auction. sad.gif

Paul did say that if RDA's box of goodies turned up too late there would be another special auction shortly after this one so hopefully we'll see more MacGyver stuff soon.

Go to auction page

You would've thought that he'd have sent any MacGyver memorabilia along with the Legend jacket. These items were to be among the highlights of the auction afterall .......

Although there has been a decent amount of StarGate and RDA general items, considering the amount of traffic generated with the mention of "Rare MacGyver items" the final outcome of only having 1 MacGyver item listed is, well, disappointing at best.

Remember what Paul said though

QUOTE (Paul Brown)
If the MacGyver items arrive near the end of the sale, we shall add them and extend the auction. If they don't arrive in time, then we shall release them soon after in another special sale.

So there may still be hope.

Agreed. And the provenance (or lack there of) of the item (sak) listed under the 'MacGyver' category was slightly uncertain at best. Hopefully our patience will be rewarded in the near future.

It sounds like RDA never included any MacGyver items in the shipment that was sent out on Jan 27.

Okay, so it's a tad hefty price tag and I (frugally) have built an entire sak collection for under that final invoice tally. But the good news is that it's raised money for a worthy cause and someone within that tight knit supporter/vendor circle took home first prize. smile.gif
