The plot of this episode sounds very much like something from the original series-- Mac trying to help someone, and then getting stuck in a predicament. While I have no idea if the episode will be good or not, it's encouraging to see the plot won't just be another Phoenix Foundation assignment (not that I mind those, but some variety is nice.)

Well I think Lee Zlotoff just schooled the writers on how to write MacGyver episodes!

This one felt old school right from the start and carried on right through with MacGyver being drawn into an unexpected adventure while just out helping a friend rebuild his house.

It was really nice to not have a mission for a change and also to see MacGyver on his own for a change.

I think this episode is much closer to what a lot of fans wanted the show to be like from the start.

The other thing that occurs to me is that this episode really shows that Zlotoff really understands what fans like about MacGyver... unfortunately more so than most of the people working on the reboot I would say. He get's what made MacGyver so endearing to so many and he's pulled on that in this episode. I remember there being discussions in here at various times where people have wondered if Zlotoff would really get the show since he had nothing to do with it since the original pilot. I think this episode answers that question with a resounding yes!

Three things I want to say:

1. Did anyone else get the idea that the opening gambit, with the walk-in freezer and all, was possibly a call-back to "Soft Touch"?

2. I loved watching Riley mimic Jack and Jack's "roleplaying". Bozer's line of, "Those two really don't do well without each other," was funny. laugh.gif

3.I loved how Matty managed to buy them extra time. Somehow, I doubt Patricia Thornton would've.

Didn't care at all for the background music, otherwise LOVED the episode. Think this is one of my favorites, maybe one of my favorites of Season 2 (along with 2x11).

Yes, noticed the call-back to "Soft Touch" and in general, the episode felt really "old-school" to me; it's probably even the most old-school episode so far. Been waiting for a long time for something like this, nice! happy.gif

Also nice change to have Mac and Riley alone in a mission-related scene - think it's the first time since the Christmas-Episode (1x11)? At least they're so rare I don't remember any others tongue.gif

Also, nice to do a PSA afterwards. There's a lot of chatter on FB and Twitter praising the Episode and/or the PSA for featuring Puerto Rico. A lot of this chatter is from people who don't seem to watch the show regularly, so this episode might even bring in some viewer for the next two episodes to check out the show.

Bit lower in audience numbers than last week, but it still won the 8pm time slot in demo AND viewer numbers. All good.

This series definitely needs more episodes like this one! This FELT like classic MacGyver, and it was such a welcome change of pace from all the "mission" episodes. I guess if I have one complaint, it's about the entire team going to Puerto Rico. That seemed a bit contrived, and I might have preferred to see Mac go on his own. But even so, Mac was able to work mainly on his own, so I can't really complain. I really hope Season 3 has more non-mission episodes like this.

Like everyone else, this was the most MacGyver like episode I've seen so far.

The freezer scene reminded me more of Last Stand than Soft Touch, only because Mac wasn't in a freezer in Soft Touch. lol

One thing I did like about Matty was that her toughness was well used in this episode with getting the local police to cooperate. I think it's great to have a tough boss, as long as they're not condescending. I hate that she calls Mac "Blondie" though... but I can forgive little things.

Overall, I did like this episode a lot. I thought it was well done. LOVED Diogo Morgado as Carlos. The little girl that played his daughter in the show is ADORABLE! She reminded me of the little girl in Slow Death.

Now, it's been bugging me, but the name Delarosa sounds really familiar... wasn't there a character in the original named Delarosa? I may be thinking of Delasora from Obsessed. O_o

Anyway, I'm glad they decided to do an episode like this for a change. It's nice to see everyone doing something than just going on missions all the time. It makes the characters more personable. I would love to see more Mac/Riley scenes. I think they work well together.

This episode gets a thumbs up from me! smile.gif

I think someone else on twitter pointed that out. There's not much similarity between the two though, so if it is a shout-out, it's not a big one.

Final Ratings are in: http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/show...-4-20-2018.html

As expected, a small loss in audience numbers.

This episode is now the one with the lowest audience numbers. Bit of a shame since it had such a good script, but that's just what happens when a show is nearing Summer. The next 2 episodes could even be lower. The Season Finale Episode for S1 had been the second-lowest episode when comparing audience numbers.

It's probably a stretch, but the whole "pepper in the bullet wound" scene reminded me of "To Be a Man". Just the whole "healing the bullet wound while the injured party bites down on something to deal with the monstrous pain" thing. Probably no connection, but that's what entered my mind.

Can't help but wonder if they'd played this episode mid-season they may have attracted more people to watch the show and maybe stick with it to the end?

Also seems a shame that they put a PSA on the end of the lowest watched show of the season.

Possibly... It's interesting though that this episode isn't as high rated on IMDb.

Also, we shouldn't forget that other episodes have had low audience numbers as well (e.g. 2x02 had 6.38 million, the Halloween-Episode 2x05 about 6.45 million).

If anyone's interested: This episode gained an additional 1.642 million viewers in DVR, making it a total of about 7.917; making the "Top 40 programs in Live+7 Day raw gains among total viewers" (rank 36). The top-scorer (Roseanne) made an additional 6.2 million, H50 an addition 2.8 million.

Just watched this on recommendation, as I have not been a fan of the reboot. I enjoyed it far more than I did any of the other episodes I've seen. I also am trying to approach it more like Burn Notice, so I can separate it from the old MacGyver a little more. But all and all it was an enjoyable episode - it's too bad from the comments it seems like this was an outlier?

A couple gripes - I miss the science! Mac just does sciency stuff in the background and no one even asks him about it, and then when someone did - he only has time to explain the science or get them out of there, not both?!?? blink.gif I'm no science expert but it helped my believability when Mac technobabbled.

Also did Mac tie all those knots to make that rope ladder in like 1 minute?? LOL

I think most had been said already. This has been the most MacGyver episode so far and written by Lee David Zlotoff himself. I hope he writes more than one episode per season. All the more curious I am: what if he wrote episodes for the original? How would those episodes have been?

Great references to the original show. The freezer was definitely Last Stand and that cop: Delarosa... Delasora.

And almost no Matty.

QUOTE

Yep, I fully agree. This is how you do it. I hope they take an example of that.

Didn't care at all for the background music

This episode had one of the best musical cues ever in the reboot. Listen how the music ends when Mac drops the telephone pole on the car and runs away and the cavalery appears.

About two episodes ago the music reminded me a bit of Trevor Rabin's National Treasure.

QUOTE
Am I the only one who barely notices the music in the episodes?

Same here. Well, I notice the music but there's nothing memorable about it. There are no typical episode themes like Ken Harrison, who made great themes for Humanity, The Wall or the uplifting cues whenever original Mac escaped. If there is like one thing that can add to this reboot is that if this Murdoc had his own theme.

QUOTE

Actually I think this could've been a great Mac/Riley episode. When I watched this I was thinking in the original this probably would've been a Mac/Pete/Jack episode.

And yes, he was finally more on his own.

QUOTE

I wonder what she said and/or was she speaking Spanish on the phone? But I didn't mind that there was waaaay less Matty in the episode.

QUOTE
Can't help but wonder if they'd played this episode mid-season they may have attracted more people to watch the show and maybe stick with it to the end?

Maybe. But if this was like the 11th or 12th episode, I think you would've had the same result. I read here that a lot of people seemed to be thinking the last Murdoc episode was the season's finale for some reason. It's a little odd if you still had 8 episodes more to go.

QUOTE

He did it in the background because no one was supposed to see it. I guess he didn't bother to explain because it would take too long to explain and probably didn't want to bore them with it. They wouldn't understand it anyway.

QUOTE

He can do any thing.
