I'm very excited about this! It makes me so glad I waited.

I'm totally rewatching this show from beginning to end again once I can my hands on it.

Let me put into perspective just how excited I am. This dwarfs how excited I was with E3 this year... and that was a HUGE deal. I'm probably gonna hold off on the new games I wanted so I can afford this.

Woohoo!!!! wub.gif

Am I fangirling? I'm fangirling... blush.gif

All I'll say is: It's about time! laugh.gif

I'm hoping this means that CBS actually does respect their fans, and maybe will treat us accordingly? whistle.gif

I guess it's no coincidence they're remastering both "Charmed" and "MacGyver" right now; 2 beloved shows that have Reboots out, huh?

I wonder if it really took the Original fans being so vocal about it ("Charmed" had a massive social media fan reaction after the announcement this year that a Reboot has been ordered; almost as big as for the MacGyver Reboot back then) that they finally got their butts in gear... hmm.bmp

It's always about the money with CBS so maybe they've finally realized how big the fan base is and that they can make some more coin off us. wink.gif

From a financial standpoint, I assume CBS may have wanted to wait and see how well the reboot did before doing a remaster. I'm not sure how they do a restore like with MacGyver, but the comparison video looked really good! I'm excited to see Mac's glorious mullet in HD.

I think CBS has figured it out by now that if they give us what we want, we'll buy it. XD

Edit: Hopefully this will work, but I did a bunch of caps of the comparison video. I uploaded them to my public share drive. Let me know if it doesn't work for anyone. Also, if anyone wants to take these and upload them a different way, please be my guest.

Well all that "Can't be done" talk has sure whipped up something of the opposite here. Yes, I am delighted. It will probably cost a fortune like all the other shows on Blu Ray when it gets released but its all good.

Posted by: Jediferret 25 June 2018 - 04:08 AM
In the back of my head I had a hard time thinking they wouldn't. I'm glad I waited though... I mean, it's still streaming on Amazon Prime, so I really had no need to actually buy it on DVD.

But I also know my own luck... anytime I buy something expensive, a better, cheaper version comes out a little bit later. So, I've learned to wait.

Patience is a virtue!

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 25 June 2018 - 04:43 AM
The big question now is will they leave it in it's original 4:3 (square) perspective or will they artificially turn it into 16:9 (wide screen rectangle) perspective?

I hope they leave it in it's original form because going wide screen most commonly means cutting of the top and bottom of the image.

Posted by: MacGyverGod 25 June 2018 - 05:10 AM
Good news! thumbsup.gif

I hope they do it right this time. Though I don't have any complaints about my dvd's at all. Maybe just put the two missing scenes from Pilot and Thief of Budapest back and also the original Pilot credit scene with the MacGyver logo in blue letters and the parachute jump.

Maybe some finally behind-the-scene stuff? Creating an episode, the writing, the filming, the bloopers, the outtakes, deleted scenes, interviews. Then again, wouldn't surprise me if they simply just remaster everything and keep it at that.

I guess it depends on how CBS planned to release it. If it's just for their own streaming service CBS All Access, they probably won't bother.

Though I'm not sure if they would pass on an opportunity to make some more money. Maybe they'll put it on CBS All Access for half a year or so to check the demand and to sell internationally and other streaming services like the Reboot (e.g. iTunes or Amazon Prime) - and if the demand is high enough, they might release it on another DVD Box or on Blu Ray.

Considering they released the Reboot S1 DVD without any extras at all in the US, I'm not sure I should hope too much for any extras for the Original one... whistle.gif

There is no doubt there will be a blu ray release. Its expensive to remaster a show and any means of making their money back is an opportunity not to be missed.

I also suspect it will maintain its original 4:3 original perspective as the moment they change it, people will complain because they will just end up cutting things out.

Special features will be nice but i have a feeling they wont.

It looks AMAZING! Renewed my interest in MacGYVER. Not that it ever went away, but seeing it so clearly will be like seeing it for the first time. Can't wait.

Posted by: MacGyverGod 1 July 2018 - 09:57 AM
I hope they at least bring in all the versions of the theme song. Like the Lost Love version of the episode and back here they aired season 4 and 5 with nearly every episode a slightly adjusted opening with different footage in it.

I just got confirmation from industry sources here in Germany today that CBS/Paramount are in fact planning a world-wide Blu-ray release themselves.

No other details are available at this time, but I guess it won't take too long after the last couple seasons will have been remastered this fall.

As for the 16:9 cropping concerns mentioned above: The few scenes shown in the comparison video in 16:9 are open matte (i.e. the left and right side have been opened to reveal more of the image), not cropped at the top and bottom. So IF it'll end up being in 16:9, it's pretty certain that we will get a wider image with more content (like, for instance, on the HD Gilmore Girls transfer), not a weird cropped one.

I'm all for a bigger resolution with more content. wink.gif Think of all the stuff we've missed. Though, the HD remaster alone is gonna be nice since things won't be so blurry.

I'm rather excited to get my hands on it... well, whenever it gets released. =P We don't have a date yet, do we?

Posted by: Jano 13 July 2018 - 09:46 AM
No. Neither the Blu-ray release nor any VOD release have officially been confirmed yet. The "CBS business partner" site is still the only page that mentions the remastering. But once the last season has been remastered, it probably shouldn't take too long to get an official release date for both the Blu-ray and the iTunes download.

Posted by: Jediferret 14 July 2018 - 03:44 AM
My guess is that it'll probably be Spring of next year, just by what we know so far with having all 7 seasons done by the end of the year, though correct me if I'm wrong.

There's a part of me that keeps thinking it'll be released before the end of the year, but I think that's just wishful thinking on my part. lol

And you're forgetting this is CBS... how many years did it take them to get the full series on DVD again? laugh.gif

Something else to think about is that they could have put extras on the DVD sets in standard quality format but couldn't be bothered AND even the quality of the first box set was pretty average.. no cases, just all the discs loose in a cardboard box.... and even more.... they apparently think US fans don't deserve extras on the reboot DVD... So realistically I'm not expecting anything other than the episodes. dry.gif

Posted by: Jediferret 14 July 2018 - 04:57 AM
Oh, of course! I'm also expecting them to slap a hefty price tag on the US release as well, without any extras. If they actually have extras and a decent price on this release, I'll be very surprised. I'm just trying to stay optimistic.

It did get me wondering if they're gonna remaster the two movies as well.

Guess we'll have to wait and see...

I'm still miffed at CBS in regards to the reboot DVD release. I was thinking of getting it for a friend who hasn't checked it out yet, but I can't justify it. Hopefully they'll stream it on Netflix... eventually... *cough* probably never...

Releasing before Christmas would be a good opportunity for People to buy it as a gift, but I also doubt it will be released before next year. My guess is they first push People to get a CBS All Access Pass, similarly like they do it with the Reboot.

It is interesting that all the other Shows get a DVD release date for August or September but the Reboot. I think "Blue Bloods" was rather late last year (October or November), but the Reboot was the only Show not being released before February.

My guess is they might do the same with MacGyver and Charmed; use it to get People to sign up for their Streaming Service, then relase it a few months or even half a year later on DVD. If they're planning wisely, they could even schedule the release of the Original remastered Show with the DVD release of their reboot DVDs (Charmed Season 1, MacGyver Season 2). They could even sell it as a package to get People to buy both; e.g. making it a Special prized Combo package or even putting the Pilot Episode of the Reboots as an extra on the Original DVD Box-Set; to get People to watch the reboots as well.

I have no clue about Marketing, but that would be a rather interesting idea. If you watch 100+ episodes of a TV Show, why wouldn't you watch the Pilot Episode of a reboot that came with the DVD box (or the online subscription) for free? It's also an extra that wouldn't cost them anything since it's already HD. Definitely cheaper then sort through old BtS material to add with it.

Posted by: Jediferret 14 July 2018 - 10:17 AM
I'd be okay with a TOS MacGyver and Reboot MacGyver bundles. Like get season 1 as a pack, season 2 as a pack... so on and so on. I do think having the pilot of the reboot as an "extra" with the original HD release is a good idea. Might get people to actually check it out.

I REALLY want my one friend to check out the reboot. He loves H5O, and is interested in the Magnum PI reboot, especially after I said Lenkov was involved. He'll check out MacGyver if it's on Netflix, until then, he refuses to give it a go.

So CBS needs to get their act in gear. I'm not buying their streaming service for ONE show. lol

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 14 July 2018 - 01:50 PM
The whole push to get people to watch MacGyver online seems pretty odd when you consider that the highest demography ratings for the show are in the older age group... as in the ones who don't even record TV to watch let alone know what streaming is, they just watch whatever's on live. laugh.gif

Maybe the movies will come later as separate Blu-ray releases...

You can bet they will be looking to maximize profits from this.

Well, I'm simply thinking of options. I doubt they'll do any sort of bundles like that, though I wouldn't be opposed to it. Most likely you'll be able to buy them separately, and if they have a pack, it's just a separate option.

It was just a thought because I was thinking of getting both reboot seasons for a friend anyway. Well, maybe... XD

No word on any bonus features yet, though.

according to that post, looks like they made new covers as well...

Posted by: DashboardOnFire 6 August 2018 - 09:45 PM
you can argue releasing each season individually is a way to make more money, but they might just be testing the waters how good it will do... also, it sure spreads the coverage for Original MacGyver over many more months.

and they can use the photos for the MacGyver Manual Book. maybe another reason why its release date was put back? they could even add some ad for it, e.g. a page with "out now" and photos of the new cover art.

Posted by: DashboardOnFire 6 August 2018 - 09:54 PM
so... Funko and BluRay withing a few weeks of each other. then maybe the book next year, along with maybe S2 around Christmas?

not to forget the Season 2 Reboot DVD release 10 days before the Season 3 premiere on TV. that's A LOT of MacGyver stuff within a few months.

Dang... look at the pricetag! That's REALLY expensive for a Blu-ray. I mean, I wasn't expecting it to be cheap, but $56 for just one season is a bit... pricy. I compared it to other season 1 popular shows, and those are more like $20-$30 (which I was expecting). I can understand that it might be a tad more since they did have to convert it from SD, but... that almost double for a typical Blu-ray season.

Posted by: MacGyverGod 9 August 2018 - 06:53 AM
I bought every season for almost that price. 50 euros at least. I think it's worth it.

It's a bit pricey, but I'm not sure that price will stay. In my experience, most prices for DVDs and BluRays on Amazon drop a bit even before the release date.

Same is happening right now with the Reboot S2 DVD: It was listed as 29.98 at first - now it has already dropped down to 19.96 and it's still on pre-sale (the release date is for September 18).

Let's hope same will be happening here. On the other hand, it might be worth to wait a few months after the release date. They might have some cheaper prices or Sale Days on Amazon before Christmas.

Posted by: DashboardOnFire 14 August 2018 - 02:47 PM
It has already started: Price has dropped to 47.87 USD at the moment.

Posted by: DashboardOnFire 14 September 2018 - 02:28 PM
Price is down to 41.19 USD now.

Posted by: Jediferret 14 September 2018 - 03:10 PM
They need to drop it at least $15 more for it to be reasonable. XD

Am I asking too much?

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 14 September 2018 - 03:17 PM
That still seems quite high.

other shows like Lethal Weapon , TBBT are early 30's while big shows like Star Trek and Walking Dead are early 40's so I'm not sure it's going to sell very well if they don't drop the price further.

Posted by: DashboardOnFire 19 September 2018 - 03:30 AM
2 days before the release of the Reboot Season 2 DVD, they dropped the price down to half the initially listed price, so maybe we'll get lucky here as well...

Nice guy. And, nice to see that the box is a lot more compact than the original season boxes. Sometimes I wonder if it was really necessary to make those big boxes. It only takes up space. Usually I don't care but just look and the LOTR and The Hobbit Blu-ray box. That's like the size of 10 normal dvds. It's huge. Glad to see they went for something smaller.

Posted by: Jano 2 November 2018 - 08:15 AM
Here's an SD-HD comparison I just did for the pilot episode:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/123605/

The SD version is a recent HDTV upscale of the old German tv master (which is a little bit better than the even blurrier US masters they used for the DVDs).

I'm very happy with the new version, but yeah, they really could have dug out at least some bonus features if they went back to the original film stock anyway.

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 2 November 2018 - 01:59 PM
Thanks for this Jano. Wow what a difference. You can actually read labels. laugh.gif

I do have to say though that the opening title looks like they have just Photoshop the title graphic that's been floating around for years now into the shot. The word looks much sharper than the rest of the image.

Posted by: Jano 2 November 2018 - 03:12 PM
Yes, indeed. I only forgive them for using the horrible fake logo they created for the DVDs because the rest looks so good. But the logo is really, really poor. It's just this random static font that doesn't even look like the original logo in any way. And in the opening of the pilot, it neither has this shining effect going through it that was in the original version nor does it fly to the front at the end, it just stays there. (In the regular opening of the other episodes it does that, though.)

With all the money that went into the remastering process, you should assume they surely could have afforded commissioning a graphic artist to recreate the original logo. Most people probably won't care anyway, so I understand that decision, but to me, it has this unique adventurous flair to it (with the gold and the lightning and the shining effects etc.) that is a vital part of the opening and the whole show. The new standard-font typed logo looks just static and boring, which is a shame. Oh well, can't have everything, I guess. wink.gif

That would make sense actually because season 3 onward had sterio sound, so they must have upgraded their equipment when they moved up to Vancouver to film.

*Note: Yes I know the "In sterio" doesn't appear until season 4, but season 3 sound is in sterio as well.

Some thoughts on the Blu Ray after watching the first few episodes...

- overall so great - everything is so clear, really nice to watch.

- because it is so clear, you can pick out the stunt doubles a lot easier laugh.gif - but the guy who does RDA is pretty good, sometimes I wasn't completely sure, others it was more obvious.

- there are a couple small scenes here and there where there is digital artifacting, guessing from them cleaning up the print, or low light - most noticeable so far on the kiss by the firelight in The Gauntlet.

- while it was jarring the first time I saw it in the preview - the logo doesn't bother me now in the main title sequence, when it zooms in close it could be a little better but it works for me. It doesn't look as great in the still pilot image or opening gambits, but neither did the original imo

- I'm amazed they call him Angus MacGyver on the back cover of the set - the description seemed like it wasn't made for fans, lol

- I'm surprised the dubbed French and German versions are included on the set - unless it's multi-region. But the French unboxing was a different packaging - instead of the MacGyver objects on the back page there was the episode descriptions in French, and the back had both English and French instead of just English. But every time you put a new disc in you have to pick a language, so maybe the discs are the same for several regions, but different boxes.

- It seems they cleaned up the movie/stock footage also a bit, but it still isn't HD like the rest of the shots. Trumbo's World is still the most egregious, especially when contrasted with the HD

- It's weird having the CBS screen/music at the end instead of Paramount

- So far everything has been in focus really well - sometimes with old shows there would be quite a bit of soft focus they didn't worry about then but would be evident in HD, but I've seen little of that.

All in all I would say it's very worth it (assuming you have a large HDTV you watch things on obviously). It's amazing how fast you get used to the HD, going back to the SD is really harsh afterwards lol.

You'd think they would have Spanish too then!

The original ones had: English, French, Italian and Spanish.

Blew through the first season on HD thanks to being home sick the last couple days....

- found no other digital artifacting besides that scene in the Gauntlet

- I really wish they had made the menus static and without music - it's really annoying you can't leave the screen on the menu.

Update - finally watched the menu sequence the whole way through, it's rather enjoyable in itself, Mac giving a cute little wave at the end lol, but it would be nice if it didn't auto repeat so you could leave the menu screen on.

- I really want all the other seasons in HD - it doesn't take anything away from the nostalgic feel of the series, it just makes it clearer so you can really see all the expressions and details. in other words - it's GREAT.

It is! Until it keeps repeating lol - still, I can't fluff the HD enough - they better release the rest. I'm slightly concerned if I'm like one of two people on the MacGyver board who bought it so far lol...

I lot of people don't own blu-ray players because streaming took over before Blu-ray had a chance to take hold. So I don't think it will ever sell as well as DVD.

I'm really hoping they put out a new DVD set made from the HD masters. That would sell much better I think.
HD on DVD more most people is sufficient and much cheaper and less wasteful than having to buy a whole new player.

You might be. lol I don't have it yet, but that's only because I can't afford it. Penalty of single living sometimes, real life takes priority. But once I have the money, I do plan on getting it.

Thankfully, my Xbox One plays Blu-ray disks. lol So, I can just watch it through that. Wooo!!! biggrin.gif

The menu is really cool though!

It's not available here yet and I'm not much into online buying. They have just released the first season of the reboot here on regular dvd for 40.99 euro. But I don't think I'm inclined to buy it at that price. Though I wouldn't be shocked of I would by the original on Blu-ray for 59.99.

Guys, thanks for all info about the bluray. I´s a pain no include spanish audio. I'm used to listening to it in Spanish since I was a child

What do you think about this? An guy called Domell1 from Poland has screenshot this pics from Poland TV. Macgyver season 2 in Hd Bluray? the quality is better than SD from DVds.

But a lot of people have either a blu ray player, xbox or PS3/4 right? I agree I'd much rather just have the HD on streaming - putting in discs for a certain episode is kind of annoying rather than just browsing through the series. I would be heartbroken if they didn't release the rest somehow at this point, but from the ads that showed multiple seasons and where it said they would finish them all at the end of the year I have hope they'll get out somehow.. even if just digitally.

Maybe the Poland TV is a hint that they will sell the HD to streaming services regardless of the blu ray - best case scenario!

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 8 November 2018 - 01:42 PM
That Poland TV images certainly look HD, but there's no way CBS would give out HD to a TV channel before they'd extorted our wallets with a Blu-ray release surely?

....unless it's some kind of promotion for Blu-ray. Giving people a teaser taste of the quality maybe?

QUOTE

Not compared tot he number of people that own DVD players. Nearly everyone has a DVD player... A lot of families would have xbox or PS I guess, but DVD sales are still far more than Blu-ray.

Hi all,

long time passed from my last post biggrin.gif

I'm going to get Season 1 on Blu Ray, I'm waiting for the European versione with latin languages (Italian,Spanish) but I really like to watch the show in English (I'm Italian, however),because the sound is more pleasing (I really like the soundtrack).

May I ask to Zoe if the episode "Thief of Budapest" is edited like DVDs or it is the original one?

Thank you,

Lamberto from Italy

PS: I don't really like the "fake logo" blink.gif

That was fixed years ago.

It was only the first batch of original season 1 DVDs that had the wrong edition of the episode.

Not only that, they also messed with the Pilot. The original opening credits while you see that parachute landing was replaced with the regular opening credits which had the explosion logo replaced by a lab explosion of the episode. His homecoming at the Pentagon was cut too and Thief Of Budapest had that scene cut when he enters the bar and asks if he's late for happy hour and The Heist shows Chris running out of the casino twice. Never got why they'd do that.

I hardly dare to ask if they fixed it all for the Blu-ray but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Pretty sure you only see that new explosion the first time you put in a disc - here's a quick iPhone capture of the title sequence explosion...

Thank God.

I just followed the link in Reptile's video to YouTube and there I found another link to the new replaced fully opening titles sequence.

I can still live with this. The G is different in my opinion but I don't think there is much difference what the logo is concerned. The shiny glow appears to be gone indeed. I can live with this. I'm glad they didn't change the explosion. I was already disappointed they changed it in the Pilot with the lab explosion. I always liked this one better. Boom: smoke, that blue and yellow fire, the sparks and the logo comes out!

Another difference is the shot when Mac jumps on the rubber boat. It's like he wants to hop in, instead of really jump in. Maybe that's from another take?

Here you can see the differences.

Of course, maybe they only do this for this season and starting from season 2 everything is back to what it was.

I think at 0:58 seconds we just see the bottom of the helicopter and when he lands parts of the cruise. But it's real fast.

The main reason for remastering MacGyver is providing new HD transfers for streaming services and TV stations. So I don't find it unlikely that season 2 is already airing in HD in some areas.

Releasing it on Blu-ray is a nice bonus, but that's not where the studio will earn their money back.

I have no idea what the cost effectiveness is in printing/producing a blu ray vs just doing digital services.... it seems like they are already using later seasons HD in some countries. Eventually I would hope Amazon would get the HD files for streaming or to buy? It seems like discs are sort of on the way out...

I have to kinda agree that hopefully they'll upload the HD to streaming. Now that I think about, it almost makes sense why after all these years, they removed MacGyver from Netflix and it hasn't returned. Maybe they wanted to update it first?

I'll still collect the Blu-rays for offline viewing, but until I get a computer that plays Blu-rays, my Xbox will have to do. It HATES the disks though, for some odd reason.

MacGyver is currently on Amazon Prime... shows tend to swap around like that. (Stargate SG-1 is on Hulu but recently appeared on Amazon Prime as well)

I also only have my PS3/4 to play blu rays... I really hate changing discs to find an episode, otherwise the quality is great smile.gif

They make more money from having it on their own streaming service than they do from Netflix.

Everything CBS does is to make money. No matter what they do, or how silly it might seem, you can guarantee there's a money reason behind it.

Of course that applies to all the networks, not just CBS.

Ordered the boxset (in french of course ^^ but I'll be watching it in English too ^^) and can't wait to have it in my hands!

Concerned by what I read though, I really hope they will release the other seasons...

Dear Friends,

Yesterday evening I HAD A BLAST!

I watched the first two episodes on the blu-ray edition, and I must say it so nice to watch this beloved show in such good quality.

The only concern I have is about certain parts of the show being a little bit too "reddish", but, apart from that, I love the new transfer so far!

I also "feel" that the french audio is of a less good quality than the original one, how do you feel about that? Is anyone of you, like me, a French guy? I would be really happy if one of you could answer me on that specific point biggrin.gif

I honestly think that I'm going to watch this boxset over and over...

For me it was like seeing the episodes for the first time again. The clear pictures certainly make a HUGH difference.

I really wish they would release the other seasons.

Macgyver finally appears in HD on the Finnish FOX TV channel with Finnish subtexts. For this I have been waiting for years! thumbsup.gif

Hi, agree with you on the “reddish” side but in season 2 I think it's worse ... maybe with the Blu-ray it will be a little better, we'll see when it comes out. .. For the audio I do not know yet because not too much watching episodes, I just had the box set, but at first glance, for the only 2 episodes I saw, nothing to report, but I will stretch a little more. ear and I'll tell you my feeling on the audio ...

Lucky already of the replay, and especially the HD quality, I hope the whole series will be broadcast in HD.

I've been watching season 6 on amazon streaming and it never has looked so good, really great HD. I've got the DVDs, which IMO look awful, with muted colors and all so grey and dead, but in streaming the colors look vibrant and the whole thing comes alive. I even enjoyed "tough boys" s6e01, IMO a terrible episode, but to see this in HD its truly like watching it for the first time, and also the sound is terrific. Love it,

So if they have the entire series, all 7 seasons in HD and stereo for streaming, why not release a bluray set? I dont get it

Money.

Selling a Bluray set is a one-time profit. Selling it to other studios and networks is a continuous profit for as long as they want to air the show. This is the main reason they converted - to future proof their product.

Also when they released the first season on DVD everyone bitched and whinged about it only being 1 season and didn't buy it so the bean counters at CBS saw is as a low profit project and deemed it as a waste of time releasing any further seasons or as a full series.

thanks for the explanation

I guess I'll have to download those amazon episodes (not sure how) and then burn them into Blu-rays to make my own set, since realistically its not very likely they will ever release the entire series on BR, though millcreek tends to do these kind of things from time to time (knight rider, miami vice, magnum?)

The full series Blu-ray is on it's way.

The right's for it were brought by German Production company [url=https://www.kochfilms.de/de]Koch Films[url], who have done some pretty amazing blu-ray work on series like Miami Vice.

Here's all the details and back story to it: http://www.macgyveronline.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=10418

They want to. Unsure what they will be at this stage, but there are plans to have some.
