New Interview with Tristin Mays: http://starrymag.com/tristin-mays-macgyver/

INTERVIEWSTristin Mays – MacGyver
By starrymag | February 14, 2020

By: Jamie Steinberg

Q) What are the recent projects that you are working on?
A) I haven’t been busy working on anything else because we don’t really have time for that. [chuckles] Just little personal things like growing my tomato garden and teaching my dog how to speak with voice to talk buttons. That’s cool! Now, things are easing up a little bit so I’ll probably have more time to work on other things and still play on “MacGyver,” too.

Q) What is new this season on “MacGyver” and with Riley?
A) There are going to be a lot of emotional rollercoasters in Season Four. Our group has disbanded over the hiatus. When the season picks up, it is a flashforward to eighteen months in the future. So, we see where we have been when we weren’t together, how we’ve been, why we weren’t together, what happened and how we eventually get back together and what prompts us to get back together. There are a lot of cool things in store. There is a new character on the show that kind of messes up a little bit. So, it will be interesting to see how we adjust to a new untrustworthy member of our team.

Q) How was Riley originally described to you?
A) A little paragraph that said “20’s, chip on her shoulder, attitude, tough, but knows how to hack computers.” I did the rest. [laughs]

Q) Was there anything you added to her that wasn’t in her initial breakdown?
A) Honestly, I just made her myself plus having a little bit of an extra chip on her shoulder being as she just came out of prison. The character has been altered to be me, so I haven’t had to do too much. So, it’s been really, really great. I kind of took out the chip on the shoulder and gave her an edge, rather than your typical girl with a bad attitude all the time. I wanted to change that and not make her your typical mean girl because things can get cliché really quickly. So, I knew what they had in mind, but I knew what I wanted to do with the character. And I think that set her apart from your normal computer hacker. [smirks]

Q) What can you tease about how Mac and Riley’s relationship develops this season?
A) No, I cannot give any spoilers away. But, as you know, Mac (Lucas Till) and Riley are family at the end of the day. So, they are always going to be there for each other. They’re going to help each other out even if it hurts other people. So, it is interesting to see what comes out of that, too.

Q) How will Riley get along with the new character Russ?
A) Well, Henry’s [Ian Cusick] character comes in as sort of an untrustworthy character. He had a dark past as well – just like Riley’s character. And even though we don’t trust him because we don’t know him, Riley is always keeping an eye out for her team because they tend to trust people really quickly and get double crossed. Riley also has a little something in common with him being as though she used to be dark as well and now, she uses her stuff for good. So, it will be interesting to see how their relationship develops, if it ever does. He’s just that guy that every time you think you can trust him he does something that breaks it and then he ends up having our back at the end of the day. I can’t give anything else away. [chuckles]

Q) There is so much we don’t know about Riley. What would you like to see going forward if there were to be a Riley-centric episode?
A) Well, we actually filmed one of those not too long ago. So, you’re going to be able to go back into the past and find out what sent Riley to prison and who she was before when she was younger. Or at least who the audience thinks she may have been when she was younger. That’s really cool. I definitely can’t give that away. [laughs]

Q) Going into a new season, do you have to do anything in particular to physically prepare yourself for the stunt work ahead?
A) I stay in pretty good shape throughout breaks, but I will say the main thing that I have to do before a season is getting my sleeping pattern back together. I can’t sleep late anymore. I have to start training my body to wake up at least 8AM because we have to be on set about 5:30AM every day. So, sleeping late would just kind of mess that up and it’s such a shock to have to change that. I have to start a new sleeping schedule, going to sleep a little earlier. Also, we film in Atlanta and I live in LA during my breaks. So, I have to adjust myself timewise as well otherwise I’m jet lagged. Sometimes we won’t even make our flight the day before we have to come back and shoot another season. Being as though all those changes are about to occur, I have to start in advance.

Q) What have been some of your favorite moments from filming?
A) Just having fun with Lucas and Justin [Hires] and Meredith [Eaton]. Now, we have Henry on the show and that’s been really, really great. We have really come together as a family now. We have our core team and we really work well together and we’re happy. It’s important to be happy when you’re working. So, that’s been great. Favorite moments? We sing during the takes and we make up songs. We make up little skits and stuff. We’re just always having fun and that changes everything. It changes how you perform and it changes your energy. The crew and everyone else – no one is stressed. It’s really wonderful to work when you don’t have any stress.
Q) What do you think it is about “MacGyver” that continues to make it such a fan favorite series?
A) “MacGyver” is a family show. It’s a show that everyone can watch with their kids. There is not a lot of violence or cursing. It’s fun, it’s humorous and it’s stuff that can never be done in real life, but it’s actually believable when you watch it on the show. It’s just kind of fun to see how MacGyver can…It’s not your typical crime series. You can defeat an enemy by making a machine gun out of wine bottles and shooting bottle caps at people. It’s really a twist on your typical cop drama. He’s making something new constantly all throughout the episode and it’s really creative. A big shoutout to our prop team who has to read the scripts and come up with these crazy inventions. I know sometimes they are just ripping their hair out shortly before each episode like, “How are we going to make this?!” Somehow, they always nail it and everything looks great and works great. So, shoutout to everyone for that! It’s a fun show that everyone can watch and it’s always been a classic. So, a lot of older people are able to introduce it to younger generations and bring everyone else into it. It’s a show that could last forever.

Q) You are a part of social media. Do you enjoy the instant fan feedback you receive to episodes?
A) It’s always really cool to see what the fans think. We do our best to make this stuff work. All we get are words on a piece of paper and it’s our job to make it come to life. Sometimes we don’t know how it is going to come out. We’re like, “Oh my gosh! How is this going to be received? Is it going to look ridiculous?” Just getting that feedback from the fans, sometimes it is a completely opposite reaction than what we expected. It’s like, “Oh my gosh! They believed it! That’s great! They liked it!” So, it helps. It’s a confidence booster. We might not always be confident in everything and the fans change that for us as soon as we read their comments. So, we appreciate that. We appreciate the feedback. We appreciate the fans saying what they want to see and what they don’t want to see. So, fans if you’re out there reading this, make sure to write us on social media. Make sure to write the writers and the showrunner if there are specific things that you want to see or don’t want to see. We can’t really do too much if you tell us on our pages. We can only just read it. But if you tell the people that actually are writing the show that will help. [chuckles] So, keep on with your comments and feedback. We all love it and it’s all really helpful.

Q) Is there anything else about the new season you want to be sure we share with our readers?
A) I don’t want to give away too much. We have some recognizable faces that will be popping in and out. Some drama. Some heartbreaks. Lots of laughter. Just stay tuned for Season Four. It’s coming for you!

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporter of you and the work you do?
A) I just want to say thank you so much for watching and being so supportive over the last four years. We couldn’t do it without you guys. Thank you to all the female fans who reach out to me and tell me things they love about my character. It seems that I have been a good remodel and that’s something I’ve always wanted to be. I’m glad that I am able to do that. With a character that wouldn’t normally be a role model and wasn’t written to be a role model, I’m glad that I’ve been able to kind of mold her into that and be a good example for young women who maybe have been through problems in their past and trust issues and things like that and show that even with trust issues you can learn to love and be open to a new family and the people who care about you and you can turn your life around. Thank you for the support and thank you for watching. Get ready for Season Four!

When George Eads of “CSI” fame decided to leave Atlanta and CBS’s “MacGyver” midway through last season, the show had a big hole to fill. His character Jack Dalton was basically Angus MacGyver’s No. 2 man.

Producers brought in Levy Tran as martial-arts expert and detective Desiree Nguyen for the second half of the season in a recurring role. But granted a fourth season, the producers decided to shake things up and bring in a big gun.

The premise: Phoenix Foundation lost its government funding and has been inactive for 18 months. The team scattered to the winds.

But then dapper actor Henry Ian Cusick, known best for his role as Desmond on “Lost,” appears as a billionaire arms dealer Russ Taylor supposedly trying to do good. He finds MacGyver (Marietta’s own Lucas Till) and convinces him to help him on a job to prevent a major bio-weapon from going off and potentially killing millions. You know - typical “MacGyver” situation. Cusick entered “Lost” season two and managed to turn Desmond into one of the show’s most beloved characters. In a way, he’s doing that again with “MacGyver” by entering a show in a major role already in progress.

“I was nervous coming in,” Cusick admitted while shooting his 16th episode late last month. “I didn’t know how I’d fit in. Thankfully, the cast has been so welcoming. The crew has been great. It’s been an easy transition. Although I’m relatively new, I feel very at home.

”In the first episode, MacGyver - bored teaching - quickly gets the Phoenix gang back together even though he has doubts about Taylor’s true motives.

“We were miserable in our new jobs since the Phoenix was gone,” said Till during a break in rehearsal at Mailing Avenue StageWorks near Grant Park. He was between takes shooting a mildly comedic concluding scene inside a fake airplane interior with most of the cast.

Till said in many ways, the writers split the characteristics of Eads’ Jack character into two new characters. Tran’s Desi became both the brawn and Till’s love interest. “There was a joke that Jack and I had a bro-mance of sorts,” Till said.

But MacGyver couldn’t smack-talk Desi the way he could Jack. So he does that instead to Cusick’s Russ, who comes across suave and likable but not villainous despite his seedy back story.

Cusick said he is at greater loggerheads with MacGyver’s boss Matilda (Meredith Eaton) in part because he’s not as organized or focused as she is. By the end of the fourth season debut episode, which aired last Friday night and featured a little fun with nitrous oxide, everyone was ready to save the world a few more times over. Turner’s massive private cash infusion brought the Phoenix Foundation and its offices back to life. “It’s home,” MacGyver said near the end.

Till, including episodes that haven’t aired yet, has now done 80 episodes in three-plus years and he is grown into the role. Now 29, his still-boyish looks mesh with more mature demeanor. “Page count wise, it’s like 40 movies in eight years,” Till said. “When I first started this, I didn’t think I could do this. It was so hard. The memorization was killing me combined with my inability to do anything outside of work.” He said, fortunately, all of that has gotten easier and he has more free time.

And the writers always come up with wackier, crazier stuff for MacGyver to escape, he said. “This season, we tethered two airplanes together and I go from one to the other to save a kid and his dad,” he said.

“Two days ago,” Till added, “we were on set and all of us got rigged up and got pulled up into a sky. That was a Friday night. We get to fight. It’s been nuts this whole week.”

He also notes that while most episodes the first three seasons focused on peril of the week, this season will be more serialized with the team chasing down a single bad guy over the first 13 episodes.

And Till said the cast is now clicking, minus Eads. “We have settled into this phase where we equally play off each other,” he said.

Casting News with an additional SPOILER ALERT: https://www.tvinsider.com/915824/macgyver-s...wendolyn-hayes/

'MacGyver' Casts Jeri Ryan as Mac's [Spoiler] For Multi-Episode Arc
Jim Halterman February 20, 2020 11:30 am

Beam Seven of Nine up... to MacGyver.

TV Insider has learned exclusively that Jeri Ryan, currently reviving her aforementioned iconic Star Trek: Voyager character on CBS All Access' Star Trek: Picard, is joining CBS' action drama MacGyver in a season-long arc during its current fourth season.

Ryan will step into the role of Gwendolyn Hayes, who (surprise!) has very close ties to none other than titular hero, Angus MacGyver (Lucas Till). Mac knows a lot of things — like saving the world with the gelled sodium polyacrylate found in disposable diapers, as he did in the Season 4 premiere — but the fact that he has an aunt comes as a big shock for him.

Executive producer Peter Lenkov explains, "Gwendolyn Hayes is Mac’s aunt, his beloved mother’s sister, and an ex-DXS agent who was presumed dead. Mac never knew she existed but Gwen was always keeping track of her nephew’s life in the shadows. She is now the presumed head of Codex, the organization that the Phoenix has been hunting this season."

Needless to say, Gwen's appearance and her familial connection to Mac will have a ripple effect on both Angus as well as with his team at the Phoenix Foundation.

"[Gwen] reminds him of his mother, and her ideals and science have merit to them. But the way she goes about it goes against everything Mac thinks and is," Lenkov says. "Gwen’s new relationship with Mac will pit his desire for family, his faith in science, and his loyalties to his friends against each other and will make our hero rethink everything. Because of her, we will see Mac like we’ve never seen him before."

Lenkov has been a huge fan of Ryan for some time and says, "I've been trying to find a hole in her schedule to get the opportunity to work with her. I think she brought a real gravitas to the role. Gwen's motivations aren't black-and-white. Her endgame is a noble one (in her mind). So, like Mac, we're conflicted by her actions. That's not an easy role to play. There's so many layers to the character that Jeri delivered on... and then some. Layers that include brains, humanity, warmth, and just the right touch of evil."

Ryan will first appear on the series in the March 27 episode.

Note: There's no episode listd for March 27 due to March Madness. But she will probably appear in Episode 4x08; set for April 10.

I don't know the actress. When I saw the photo, I thought she was playing his half-sister or something tongue.gif since I've had that theory about Cage back then.

But apparently, Jeri Ryan is 51 so that would her put around the age of Mac's mom if she was still alive.

Oh for crying out loud!!

Can't we just have some good old fashioned action and adventure without all the Days of Our Lives drama!!

Does anyone on that show even remember what they're rebooting any more?? mad.gif

I for one am excited about the Jeri Ryan arc. I like the idea of Mac being conflicted and challenging his beliefs. Of course, I'm assuming that his loyalty to friends wins out, but it is fascinating to see how a picture changes from black and white to multiple shades of grey. Having been a child in the era of westerns and clear good guy/bad guy dynamics, the world has become so much more complicated. Although I do hope no action and fun is sacrificed.

I will say that Mac needs a normal, stable, regular family

Interview with Justin Hires: http://starrymag.com/justin-hires-macgyver/

By starrymag | February 21, 2020

Q) What are the recent projects that you have been busy working on?
A) A lot actually! I’m currently writing Half Baked 2 for Universal. So, that’s been taking up a lot of my time. Also, I’ve started putting out music and I’ve just put out my first hip hop project called Chapter 1: I Do This Too to let people know I do a lot of different things. So, I thought that would be the appropriate title for the mixed tape. So, between writing Half Baked 2 for Universal, putting out music and touring doing standup comedy and working on “MacGyver” my plate is pretty full.

Q) Where do we pick up with Bozer in Season 4 of “MacGyver?”
A) The season starts with Will as a moderately successful film director or at least he’s starting to break through. We discover Wilt at a film festival. He’s premiering his new film and then MacGyver (Lucas Till) comes along to try to get the group back together to help solve a mission. Of course, millions of peoples’ lives are at stake. [laughs] Then, we have a new character – the Russ Taylor (Henry Ian Cusick) character that comes into play. We’re not exactly sure if he is a good guy or a bad guy. But we bring him along. Well, he kind of recruits us to help him out and then along the mission we start to discover whether or not he is a good guy or bad guy.

Q) What keeps challenging you about portraying Bozer?
A) You know, it’s funny. Every season I feel the writers give me a super dramatic scene or episode and I’m actually a comedian. I’m a standup comedian at my heart and core. So, it always challenges me acting to go into these emotions that I typically stray away from naturally. But the outcome is always a great episode and great scenes and it helps me to become an even better actor.

Q) Have you had much of a say in Bozer’s development over the seasons?
A) The writers do such an amazing job that I really don’t say too much. The only thing that I always try to make sure I do is make him sound as authentic as possible. So, what I mostly do is make sure my character is sounding authentic and I feel like this is something that Bozer would say. I don’t really contact the writers. I think they’re doing a really good job with my character. I think he has evolved tremendously. I’m very proud of the writers and what they have done with him so far.

Q) Going into Season 4 was there someone(s) you were hoping to share scenes with?
A) I think they’re pretty good at having us work with everyone. I was excited to work with Ian (Henry Ian Cusick – he prefers Ian over Henry). I think we have some great scenes together. I always love scenes with Meredith [Eaton] and Lucas. I am always looking forward to that. Actually, what I kind of look forward is we always have these interesting guest stars on the show. They are always fun to work with because they always bring a new energy and a new vibe to these scenes. I really enjoy meeting and working with the guest stars also.

Q) Is there any chance for a Wilt centered episode this season?
A) I’ve heard there are more coming up. We haven’t gotten to it yet. For the most part, I’m more so helping Matty at the foundation in the war room. So, I’ve kind of become her number two guy when it comes to directing the crew with where to go and stuff to look up as far as facts and helping with the weapons almost like Q in the James Bond films. So, I’m kind of more so in that element in Season 4.

Q) How does Russ fit into the team’s relationship and how will he interact with Bozer?
A) That’s a great question. Russ has someone saved the Phoenix Foundation with his finances. But when he first meets Wilt, after a few episodes we’re starting to see him question what exactly is Bozer’s purpose on the show. What does he really bring to the team? What is really his value? So, there is a little bit of competitiveness with Russ and Bozer with who brings the most value to the team. Bozer steps up to the challenge and lets him know that “I belong to the Phoenix Foundation and I bring a lot to the team.”

Q) Who are some guest stars we will be seeing this season?
A) There was one guy I was very excited to be working with – Keith David!

Q) What have been some of your favorite stunts or scenes to film over the years?
A) My favorite scenes to film are any time they allow Bozer or put him in situations where I am able to show off my physical comedy. I think that is something the audience really likes, too. Let’s say there is an explosion or we get shot it (something like that) where I can show a little bit of physical comedy – how I react to the situation at the moment. I enjoy those type of moments. My other favorite scenes are any time they allow me to improv. When they allow me to improv and get a few jokes that’s always my favorite.

Q) What do you think it is about “MacGyver” that continues to make it such a fan favorite series?
A) I think, ultimately, the show is about family. It’s about a group of friends that see each other as family and I think that’s something that is universal. I think everybody can relate to one of the characters on the show, which is great. I think everybody has a MacGyver or a Riley (Tristin Mays) or a Bozer and all these other characters in their group of friends or family. And I think that sometimes people see themselves or see somebody that they would want to hang out with when they look at us on the show. I really do believe that between the family aspect and the heart that we bring to the show is why people gravitate to “MacGyver” so much.

Q) You are a part of social media. Do you enjoy the instant fan feedback you receive to the series?
A) I do love social media! I love that connection with artists. There are two different types of people in the entertainment business – the people that love social media and then there are people that hate social media. I, luckily, love being on social media. I enjoy doing a behind the scenes video and cracking jokes and really having that engagement with the audience.

Q) Is there anything else about Season 4 of “MacGyver” you want to be sure we share with our readers?
A) I think this season we’re going to get a lot more drama in a good way. I think the stakes are much higher. I think they’re going to get to see their favorite characters step up to the plate and tackle the task at hand.

Q) You have great comedic timing. Is it something that has always been a natural ability for you?
A) I’ve been naturally funny since pre-school. [chuckles] I remember getting my first laughs in pre-school. I won “Most Humorous” in elementary and in high school. So, yeah, it’s one of those things where I’ve always been the funny guy in school at class. I was the one the teacher said was talking too much. [laughs] It all paid off because now I’m getting paid to talk. It all worked out!

Q) What would you like to say to everyone who are fans and supporters of you and your work?
A) Wow! I appreciate you. I read all the comments and the tweets. Their support means more to me than they know. I will just continue to strive for greatness and to become the best version of myself. To be an inspiration to others.
