Every week I will be posting a new topic titled "Episode Discussion". In this we will discuss an episode, what we liked about it, what we didn't like, etc.
Episode 133 - Good Knight MacGyver
Part 2: The magician Merlin accompanies MacGyver on his quest to rescue the princess, but first they need to stop the evil queen from causing destruction with an early version of gunpowder.

Ah here we go! "Good Knight, MacGyver" (Part 2).
I remember the suspense of waiting a whole week to see the conclusion of this great episode when it first aired. We were literally left with a cliff hanger, as MacGyver and Merlin are hanging on to that trap door and trying to keep from falling into the pit of fiery lava. And then MacGyver uses his corkscrew on the SAK to help pull them up. Wow- that was pretty cool!
And the other MacGyverisms were great- making the dog whistle, and making the letters show up on the wall in flames- and the Ben Franklin trick- igniting the kite and blowing off the prison bars! That was pretty awesome! And he managed to destroy Morgana's workshop at the same time!
Of course, MacGyver and Merlin's interactions were great throughout it too- they played off each other pretty well and made it rather funny at times. And we have the quintessential moment! We finally discover MacGyver's first name!!!!
"Walk in love, walk in service and you will walk in honor, my beloved son- Angus!!!"
And the end of the episode was funny too- as MacGyver sees the people from his dream in real life there- and then discovers the amulet in his pocket. I love those little double-take type endings- they're always fun!
This is definitely a great 2 part episode- and probably one of the best episodes of the 7th. Season!

Of course I vote excellent on this episode. The story continues with a great opener of where we left off over the lavapit and than continues for other dangers in the caves. The rest of the episode is outstanding when it's set only in Morgana's castle. One of MacGyver's greatest adventures ever!!! All the MacGyverisms and of course the finale when he gets shot. I don't know about you but for me MacGyver meeting Ian Mac'Iver it's like MacGyver meets his future self. And they sure look a like. Dark eyes, mullet...
We already discussed before the hacking of how MacGyver would be and look like when he's old. Well to me it's like Ian Mac'Iver. Long gray hair, beard, moustache.
It's just so great and Morgana's henchmen were so scared and calling her Magnificence.
I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver. I love this half of the show more than the first, I must confess. The whole thing is very Python-esque, and of course Sir MacGyver's final scene is fantastic and dramatic.

While he had more to do in the first half, the second half is just one storyline. Rescuing Cecilia, while everything else goes wrong or dangers coming to him.

Yeah, Loth, I think I'd say I like this part betterthan the first...though they're both among my favorites. I tend to look at them as one long ep, instead of 2 parts, but anyway...
I loved the bantering between Mac and Merlin...way too funny! I thought the whole dog thing was a little melodramatic..but that's just my humble opinion. Merlin just seemed all freaked out about this dog like he'd never seen one before...it's not like the mask thing made it unrecognizable. Anyway, I think Mac's "death" scene near the end there is pretty darn near being the best scene in the entire series! Love it love it love it.

"Another day, a whole 'nother set of fresh possibilities. I'm a sucker for mornings." MacGyver

I think I like Sir MacGyver's death scene so much because it provokes a very real emotional response in me. MacGyver is very much a knightly character-- a hero. He is perfectly placed in this role.
And the irony of being killed with the first gun ever created! It just grabs me!
I cannot help but love that dramatic and poignant scene!

Did it work ? Did it work ??? I wanted to quote Sheepy here . Because , even as I already mentioned this last week , I think the way he died was so great . In slow motion ( for the sake of effect . I mean that it is our hero that is dying . . . to return to the present day. )And there is a lot more I can say that I like about this episode. In part two that I liked about the MacGyver / Merlin togetherness. I mean, I felt they were as if they were the comic relief whenever Merlin confronted MacGyver on things. In the beginning of this the second part , talking about " Pivot point " on the board over the hot molten lava . And MacGyver exclaiming that " Man ! You could use a deodorant " ( I am aware that I already mentioned that part. But it was too funny not to mention it, again. I just love Richard's sense of humour .) And when , after MacGyver got Merlin and himself across the board Merlin was complaining about MacGyver being his "rival " Even tho' MacGyver was NOT the "rival" I felt myself hearing what Morgana was going to say as she was looking at her plans on the map. " Today the Roman Western Empire . Tomorrow . . . the world !" Especially that last part about the world coming tomorrow. Merlin saying about when they met up with the dog in the mask ( I think someone was asking what was the words in the spell he cast . I believe it was something that goes like " Gor Gone -it Oh " And then Merlin had the idea to put that yucky green stuff all over himself . He was saying " This ploy will repel any creature on earth". MacGyver: " You can say that again " . So Merlin repeated " This ploy will repel any creature on earth " MacGyver: " Never mind . " ( It is funny that Merlin does not understand MacGyver when he spoke ) . Of course there was that immortal scribbling on the wall : " .ecivres ni klaW .evol ni klaW ronoh ni klaw lliw uoy dnA ,nos devoleb ym sugnA "
( that part wasn't easy. believe me ! But I just wanted to show that I can write backwards. Only the lettering is still right side . I dare anyone to understand what was just written. Only if you have seen this episode, you will know what I just said. . . WOW ! I can't believe I just did it ! ) I hope it is okay, Rocky, that I just did that ? But anyway, I also liked that Ben Franklin thing he did with the kite . And as we were discussing last week about this week's episode that he was shot on the left side of his head . He was " a bit dazed " , that is why he was still thinking that Pete was King Arthur . He saw the doctor had his SAK and he reached into his pocket to see he had King Arthur's amulet . ( just like they used that same trick in " Serenity " . Really neat how they did that ! ) It will always be one of my favourite episodes. Especially since I always love any story about King Arthur . And that is my take on this episode. I hope you enjoyed to read it. Hahaha. Sincerely, Katey Mackay

It worked! Congrantulations! I'm glad my explaining was helpful.

Yes, Astra ( AND Rocky , also ) Thank you, so very much . You were both extremely helpful . I appreciate it. ( Sorry folks, for the off-topic portion of my post , here. ) I guess , I just needed that extra ( and encouraging ) push to try something new. Thanx, once again .
And now, back to our regular scheduled posting . Already in progress .

There was once a site that had the clip of MacGyver dying. I wish we could have it too.

Now why does everyone like MacGyver's death scene so much?
That's why. I like it just as much when Superman was falling at the end of Superman Returns.

I think you could be referring to the music video on the www.macsyourman.com site ? Am I right ? . . . Also I have to say that I also like the Superman scene that you are referring to. It has gotta be that drama-in -slow-motion thing. Just like I like about the death scene at the end of Good Knight , MacGyver . Very slow and so dramatic that it makes me stop and be sad . I love that gift that Richard brings to his performances. That look in his eyes , and the expression as well . The whole bit about his death scene gets me in the heart every time.

No, no, no!!! It's years back when I found it, it was the only clip on that site and it was the actual clip of the episode. Can't remember the url, though.
We're still only at season 4 in Belgium. Thank God for the tapes.
'Morgana's journal! Wait!' 'Merlin!' 'But all this knowledge! No I must have it!' 'MacGyver!!!' *POW*

I don't know ! Is everyone done with this episode ? But I was thinkin' just this morning about this episode. I mean , I was thinking about MacGyver's behaviour towards King Arthur. I LOVED that when he saw King Arthur for the first time, he ( funny that he did that ) looked at him and yelled , " HEY , PETE ! " When I see that scene , I think why would they have chosen Dana Elcar to be King Arthur ? Was it because King Arthur is represented by Pete since they are both figures of authority in MacGyver's life ? ( since this is all a dream sequence - in all the episode ? ) Or could they have chosen another actor to be King Arthur had it not been for Dana's situation ? Since Dana was blind and all that ( not that Dana's blindness has anything to do , really, with my question ) . . . could they have chosen someone else ? Anyway, as I was saying . . . that I was thinking about MacGyver's behaviour towards King Arthur and that he called out for Pete . And then he learned that it is King Arthur that he is speaking to. The way that MacGyver was respectful towards King Arthur is different than he is when he is respectful towards Pete . He is more careful of King Arthur , bowing down in reverence towards King Arthur . But when he is with Pete , he is - of course - respectful . But in much a different way. ( And I speak of not only in this season that Dana was blind , but also BEFORE when Dana was sighted . ) It is almost like because Pete ( even though he is MacGyver's boss ) is a close friend. Is it because of Richard 's relationship with Dana ? Or what ? Do people understand what I am trying to ask ? Why is it that he is different to King Arthur than he is towards Pete ? But why would they have wanted to??? I think it was cool to see Pete in a different persona.

And apparently King Arthur lost his eyesight as well.

I noticed that. But I thought they were just compensating for the fact that Dana was blind . Because in all ( the other )stories about King Arthur ( btw, that means " Excalibur " and Disney's " Sword in the stone " just to name two King Arthur stories . . . of which I have seen and enjoyed - because I love ALL King Arthur stories ) King Arthur is never blind . And even when they mentioned King Arthur on " Stargate - SG1 " . All the time I saw a story about King Arthur , he was never blind , so I thought they were just saying he was blind , because Dana Elcar was blind from glaucoma . I mean, he can't miraculously have regained his sight , just in order to do this episode . And Dana wanted to stay on ( in the cast ) . I think he wanted to prove that he is still capable to work . Wasn't he saying something in an interview ( On " Entertainment Tonight " ? or somewhere ? ) about wanting to stay and work . I sure do applaud Mr. Elcar for having the guts to continue . Bravo , Dana ! And as you say , Rocky , Pete was the authority in MacGyver's life as King Arthur would be in this episode .

Hmmm. I had heard a lot about this episode and was looking forward to seeing it but was disappointed the first time I saw it. I shouldn’t have expected to like it as I haven’t really liked any of the “dream” episodes. I have tried to figure out why – Its not just the fact that it puts Mac in unusual surroundings. I don’t know if I can pin point a reason. Mac being the hero surrounded by incompetent people in his dreams and that seems a little bit cocky to me. Then again that’s what its like when he’s awake! The episodes just don’t seem like a MacGyver episode. The dream episodes seem all a bit silly and the dodgy scenery and props in this one make it seem like they aren’t even trying very hard to make it work. Like Loth said its like Monty Python but its supposed to be MacGyver!
Did anyone else wonder what was on the paper in the amulet? When MacGyver made the dog whistle with it I was waiting for the rest of the episode to find out what the piece of paper in the amulet said. I guess it was only there as a prop for the whistle but I expected it to be important in some way.

Just see it than as one of the last episodes set in the woods. How can you not like this?

Not cocky. This is just something they used from Back to the Future. He thinks 20th century-like while the knights think as they did in their time.
Marty McFly also had his 80's ways of doing things in the 50's while the people back than had other ways of doing it.

Well these two episodes were chockfull of MacGyverisms and lots usage of the knife. Besides this is MacGyver in a shiny armour. So to speak.

Well, Serenity worked and Good Knight MacGyver worked as well. Except for MacGyver's Women.

That was just the royal seal as Arthur said so. There's not much more to it. What else can he do with it? Role a cigarette?
The highest honor preserved only for knights of the round table.

Well I've heard RDA say in interviews on more than one occasion that the MacGyver team never took themselves too seriously and that they've always "had our tongues planted firmly in our cheeks"
So Monty Python could well be a very good analogy, this could also explain the errors in costumes etc.. they where just out to have a good time and make a fun episode, and not to worried about period details.

That's what it's all about. Having fun in what you do.
However I can't help but to say it. But adding more accuracy to it would've been nicer, I think. Than again, the more you try to more people would say it's not right anyway.
In BTTF not everything is correct either. Things we see in the 1955 of the movie sometimes weren't made until a few years later.

Yes, thank you . I am so glad to see that I was not the only one that was wondering that . Ppphhewww ! Perhaps there is a way for me to look a little closer at that . . . or not .
And I also wanted to mention that I liked the thing about Merlin mis-quoting . I mean isn't that what he was doing when he said , " I don't want to toot my own . . antler " ? Didn't he mean , " I don't want to toot my own horn " ? near the beginning of the second part ? I mean , it was just as MacGyver and Merlin were just arriving at the castle where Morgana was ?
Sincerely, Katey Mackay
