I thought "MacGyver: Lost Treasure of Atlantis" was an excellent return for MacGyver. I remember watching MacGyver all the way through from 1985 onward- and I was quite thrilled to see him return for these TV-movies in 1994.
This one is a great treasure hunt type adventure, with him searching for Atlantis with his old Professor Atticus. There's a bit of an Indiana Jones feel, but of course, MacGyver gets things done with his own style. (And that's cool with me- I love Indiana Jones too! ...Indiana Jones IV- May 22, 2008! - Can't wait!!!) biggrin.gif
Atticus was a lot of fun probably because he reminded me a bit of Jack Dalton- both had a bad habit of not telling MacGyver everything upfront and getting him into trouble!
And MacGyver travels around a good bit in this one, so there's an international feel going on. I thought it was great that MacGyver also manages to stop a country involved in "ethnic cleansing" (aka murder) while escaping from them. He always gets the job done!
The MacGyverisms are incredible in this one. Escaping from an electrically charged floor, the classic distraction with the candle in the armor, the stalactite to cut the ropes- and of course tying rockets onto a car with on engine to make it go! That was awesome!
And the Swiss Army Knife gets some use in this one, as it's very helpful in discovering a secret about the Ark of Solon. And of course, MacGyver uses it to start an airplane!!! smile.gif
And the final escape from the volcano with the pulley system was cool too. It all came off like a good two-part MacGyver episode- like "Legend of the Holy Rose", which would be most appropriate. I think both TV-movies were a good guide for what a theatrical movie could or should have looked like.
I loved this TV-movie and I particularly loved the final message at the end. The treasure of Atlantis was of course, knowledge! And knowledge truly is more valuable than the worldly riches the bad guys were wanting.
"Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her." (Proverbs 3:13-15)
There are also some great quotes from this TV-movie I really like.

"If I taught you anything in university, it's that the search for truth is never easy, MacGyver."- Professor Atticus

"I was at the end of my rope. Oh please understand, I mean- you were the only person I could turn to."- Atticus "Story of my life."- MacGyver
biggrin.gif

"You sure this will work?"- Atticus "Nope."- MacGyver
"Good, that's the MacGyver I know."- Atticus wink.gif

Heres a thought...

In that scene where they escape with the rockets on the old truck... all those bad guys are shooting at them.. and theres a few of them... which means theres hundreds of bullets flying in MacGyvers general direction...

Not one of those hundreds of bullets hit either MacGyver or Atticus blink.gif

I loved Lost Treasure of Atlantis!

It was good ol' Mac back on the road again for some oldtime treasure hunting.
I love it how they crawl underneath the ground through those narrow tunnels. The look on Mac's face is priceless!! wub.gif

I can discuss every little detail but I'll suck it up and won't bore you with those LOL.

I loved it.
Also liked the fact that they took Atlantis. Another mythological commune and again the treasure is not in gold, but old scrolls which could make the world a little better.

I like the bittersweet ending that the scrolls are being destroyed and Atticus can only spread the word without evidence.

That was asked in an interview were he was promoting the movie (Regis & Kathy Lee I think)

Rick said "They were blanks, go figure" and giggled.

I know that address the viewer's dry.gif but I bet it made Rick and Brian feel better. laugh.gif

This movie was fun. I love Brian Blessed! It looked like RDA and BB worked together well. Lots of great MacGyverisms and action.

I enjoyed most of the 'treasure hunting' episodes, and I did enjoy this movie, but it did seem sort of repetitive coming on the heels of the series.

I voted GOOD!

I voted excellent of course. This one was my favourite of the two movies while I was a kid.

This one has indeed an Indiana Jones feel and I think also one of the first movies for a treasure hunting type set in present times just like Tomb Raider, National Treasure and Sahara.
This is actually also the reason why I don't want (if it's made) the feature film to be a treasure hunting adventure. It's going to be like rechewing something.
This was a great adventure, lots of action, getting caught, escapes and travelling. From Greece to London to the Balkans back to London and Greece. Many great MacGyverisms.

Also the theme made for this one is great which is used with every clue they found. It's so fitting especially at the end when everything is revealed in the volcano. MacGyver's facial expression when Hecate arrives is worth a picture. He smiles so naturally on that one.

When they're escaping out of the base they placed the hood from the car at the back of the car, right behind them, I assume it was bulletproof stuff. The guy in front them shooting at the gates needs shooting lessons.
They all do because they always miss, with a few exceptions.
The fact there's no lava in the volcano and that they can see in space is even more silly. If there was lava of course it couldn't have worked.

Yeah but without that we wouldn't have got a spectacular escape. biggrin.gif

I loved The Lost Treasure of Atlantis, dispite the hokey ending. biggrin.gif

The story was great, the interaction between Mac and the Professor priceless, chocka block with MacGyverisms, and that chase seen was classic!

_____

I saw Blessed in another movie a couple days ago, "Day of Wrath". These are the only two things I've ever seen him in. Anybody know of something else he's done worth watching?

Back to 6 degrees of MacGyver! biggrin.gif

Brian Blessed is still active in acting and is currently filming "Risen", due for release sometime this year. It's about the British boxing legend Howard Winstone.

He's also done quite a few famous ( and I'd say good, though some may disagree) movies-
voiced Mr. Clayton, the Gorilla Hunter in Disney's Tarzan (1999)

voice of Boss Nass in Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace! cool.jpg
(cool- MacGyver and Star Wars connection!)

It seems he's done quite a few Shakespeare plays- Macbeth, Hamlet, King Lear and Much Ado About Nothing to name a few.

He was Locksley in 1991's hit Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (with Kevin Costner)

He was also Suleman Khan in a pretty cool 1983 Tom Selleck movie- that is a really fun movie for Indiana Jones fans particularly- "High Road to China"!

And hey- he was Prince Vultan in 1980's scifi classic "Flash Gordon" (with soundtrack by Queen!)

He even did a 1976 TV-movie called "The Story of David", playing the role of Abner.

So from Shakespeare to MacGyver to Star Wars to The Bible, he's done quite a range!

*pouts* I can't say much about this one since I haven't seen it since it aired, but I do remember enjoying the 'IndianaJonesishness' of it. I love movies/shows like this (and Legend of the Holy Rose, Eye of Osiris, etc.) which have archaeological puzzles. I loved how all the planets aligned even if, astronomically, this isn't too realistic.

Embarassing Mac fan: I was big into Robin Hood around the time this ep aired, so I remember squealing when Brian Blessed came on. Some might remember him as Lord Locksley in 'Prince of Thieves.' blush.gif

Mac
going to LA next month and thinking of picketing in front of Paramount's headquarters for them to release the movies...

I missed the MacGyver theme! sad.gif
The start was great but I’m dying to know how they managed to escape from the sand (or woodchips?) that buried them. That scene set up the Atticus MacGyver relationship well but it was a very Jack/Mac and I couldn’t help missing Jack sad.gif
The Balkan camp will always be Battersea power station on the banks on the Thames in the middle of London to me. laugh.gif
The end bit in the volcano was all a bit to unrealistic for me.
hmm.bmp Do you think MacGyver was trying to shove Cleeve in to the fire/water stuff or was it a mistake? He ran at him pretty hard. Looked a risky move, could have ended up in the drink himself! ohno-smiley.gif
Anyway, over all I liked this movie and I vote good. biggrin.gif

Popping in for a minute...

I found both Atlantis and TTD today (WOOHOO) and watched Atlantis first. I have to say I was a bit disappointed. It seemed cheesier than the other adventure eps from the series (Legend of the Holy Rose, Eye of Osiris) and Brian Blessed, much as I adore him, was soooo over the top. rolleyes.gif

That said, I liked how the puzzle came together at the end even though it's astronomically impossible. I also just about cried as all those scrolls were reduced to powder! sad.gif

Best line (paraphrasing, since the drugs aren't all out of my system yet and my memory's still shot biggrin.gif ): We were buried alive! (pause, then, under his breath) That's minor?

I vote poor for this film mainly for the astronomical facts...
The conjunction of the planets is ridiculous...
Even children knows that planets dont shows in that way...like spheres in the sky. The planets are like stars with naked eyes; the scripters must be know this.
Maybe the movie is for children...so is OK, but for me I prefer Trail To Doomsday.

I voted excellent. I throughly enjoyed it. Especially when Atticus was teaching the children about the lost civilization. I didn't enjoy the burned man, when they were about to enter the cavern or whatever. But in was enjoyable. matchs.JPG

I finally watched this last night. I saw it when it first aired, but never since then, so it was practically new to me last night.

I have to say, it was better than I remembered it being. I think when I first saw it, my expectations were too high. Overall, this is the equivalent of a decent episode. I think its main problem is simply that they got overly ambitious at times and did not have the budget to accomplish what they wanted to accomplish, so certain parts look REALLY hokey (particularly towards the end.) But as a treasure hunting episode, it's certainly better than crap like Eye Of Osiris or Mask Of The Wolf (sorry, Jack Dalton, love ya, but that episode sucked.)

The Phantom Menace connection is kind of interesting, with Brian Blessed (Boss Nass) and Oliver Ford Davies (I forget what his character was called in TPM, but he was the guy with the pointy beard who told Padme, "A disruption in communication can mean only thing... invasion.")

Overall, the acting in this movie wasn't as horrendous as it was in some regular episodes, though it still wasn't great by any means. It was serviceable for the type of movie they were making.

Tonight, I plan to watch "Trail To Doomsday" for the first time in ages.

Did Mac use a Super Tinker or a Hiker in this movie?

I liked this one pretty well. It wasn't as good as Trail to Doomsday, but a good treasure-hunting story. I'm into mythology and all things Greek in a big way, and it's true that most scholars think the legend of Atlantis started with the volcanic explosion that tore apart the island of Thira (now called Santorini, and much smaller than it was in ancient times).

The one thing I really didn't like was Atticus. I liked him at first, as he reminded me so much of Jack Dalton, but he started getting on my nerves after 20 minutes or so. Good MacGyverisms, though, and a good message at the end, about knowledge being the greatest treasure there is.

MacGirl, I so agree with you on Atticus. That Brian Blessed guy has 'LOOK AT ME! I'M AN ACTOR!' written all over him. Every time he opens his mouth his voice makes me cringe. I do wish there would be a way to erase BB from the movie and replace him with a not so dominant being. With today's technology it shouldn't be a problem. But it would probably be too expensive.

So the presence of BB takes away a lot of the pleasure of watching this movie, at least for me. Still, when I manage to look around the Big Bad Actor I see a lot of good stuff. It's a nice adventure, and I like the MacGyverisms.
But I like Trail to Doomsday a whole lot better.
