I finally succeeded in finding an old post by Rock's detailed description and since I still would like to know his answer to my question I never got to read before the big bang I'll post this again.

QUOTE
MacGyverPeter:

When mac uses the cloth and the rock to knock the man off the horse. Now my friend was convinced a rock slung out of the cloth couldn't move fast enough to do that so, so we figured it would be easy enough to emulate, at school at lunch outside i had a bandana, and a hackey sack so we could try it and physically see how fast it went, on our third go around my another one of my friends (big jacked irish kid, freckles , red hair, the works) happens to be walking past the wall of the shcool we are testing this on and it hits him square in the chest near the heart, he fell over, we asked eachother that couldn't possibly have enough force to knock him down. when we helped him up we asked him, how did u fall down by being hit with a hackey sack? he said " it hit me so fast that it startled me and i just fell over" so we thought maybe there is a small aspect of surprise with it?

Just wanted to share this small story, your thoughts on it?

Slings have been used for centuries for hunting small animals and rodents as well as a general weapon.

And I know form experience that you can smash a window from quite a distance with a sling.

laugh.gif Look at David and Goliath...David's sling certainly wasn't elasticized in any way.. wink.gif .

QUOTE
MacGyverPeter:

I don't think i mentioned anything about elasticity or does slingshot refer to one of those a Y shaped stick with a ruber band.

QUOTE
Pseodonym:

If you are swinging it around the rock or whatever would be the same speed as however fast you were swinging it around, so when it flew out it could be going relatively fast. I have never tried it before, but I am thinking about doing so now

But how do you aim? I never tried before but I'm pretty sure I would send the stone anywhere but where I wanted it to go.

You swing it around your head and then let go of one end of the sling allowing the rock to fire in the direction you want.

Obviously it takes practice to get any degree of accuracy.

Actually it takes ALOT of practice. Just a warning, don't try this while sitting on a horse. They don't appreciate getting stung in the rear and tend to take off running at a high rate of speed. I lost a dare and this was the task--fire a rock from a sling. It looks easy but its a lot harder than I thought it would be. I had the sling moving at a fairly good rate of speed when I dropped it by accident and the rock nailed my horse right above her tail. She took off like she'd been shot from a rocket launcher. I grabbed her arounfd the neck and hung on. I think we stopped before we crossed the county line. My friend who set me up was laughing so hard I thought she would need oxygen. Needless to say, I confined my rock slinging to the ground.
