A prospective love interest for MacGyver, Maria was reunited with her
grandfather when the Berlin Wall fell. She joined the Phoenix Foundation, became
romantically involved with MacGyver, and then left for Brazil on assignment.
Note: She actually left the show after the producers received loads of angry mail from
female viewers, who wanted Mac to remain single and uncommitted.

This is the pretty German girl with blond hair, right? Pretty girl, HATED her character. Sorry, just thought it was awful. Is she a foreign actress? I hated her accent, too. I wasn't against Mac having a girlfriend, but she never seemed suited to him at all. Nikki was a much better choice.

So, after "MacGyver's Women," does Maria ever come back, or is that it for her character? I can't remember.
That was it, thanks to our female viewers. Maria sorta suffered the same fate as Nikki because of it. There is however still a mention in Jerico Games about her. MacGyver refers to her in that one as: There's a girl at Phoenix. I do think about her but she's on assignment.

They should have kept Nikki on just as a colleauge. They were funny together. But, back then TV relationships weren't as played out as today's. Today they would create the show with a female foil in the first place! Like Bones, for example. Anyway, I wish they would have kept Nikki at least for part of the episodes. Maria, not so much.

I am not opposed to Mac having a girlfriend, but Maria just rubbed me the wrong way. The idea of Mac hooking up with a deadly German agent just irks me. Of course Mac fell for Deborah who was a hired killer, and Lisa who was KGB. This pattern just irked me.

I voted good. I liked her best in MacGyvers Women. She is very good looking and I like her accent. I am glad that Mac never made a big commitment to her, I like the loner side of him which I relate to.

I didn't really like her much at all. But I did start wonder, towards the end of the series, if Mac was even into women. During the first season he obviously was, but by later in the series, he seems to have no interest whatsoever. Sure, he kind of hooks up with Maria, but even that freaks him out. My girlfriend is convinced that Mac and Murdoc are actually in love with each other, and the tension between them is just a result of their suppressed feelings

What makes your girlfriend think that? Mac's a contract to Murdoc.

RDA actually made a comment in one of his interviews while discussing MacGyver's love life "People are starting to talk about MacGyver."
So I think there was a bit of an in joke on the set about "are we REALLY sure he likes women? cos he doesn't seem very comfortable around them?"

Well, of course, my girlfriend was kidding around. Murdoc seems very, um, effeminate at times. So combining that with Mac's complete disinterest in women, and the way Murdoc never seems to actually want to kill Mac (how many wasted opportunities did he have?), and you end up with some obvious jokes about the two of them.
As for Mac-- I never really saw him as gay, but definitely as asexual. Kind of priest-like. Not in the first season, of course, but certainly later in the series. I remember after the series finished, I went back and saw "Lost Love," and it actually surprised me to see Mac in bed with a woman-- you'd never see that later on. It seems like, over time, the writers made a conscious decision to, um, desexify him (I know that's not a word, lol.)

At that time it wasn't the writers it was the fans everytime they would introduced a woman in MacGyver's life the fans would hate her and tell them to not let MacGyver fall in love with her, or remove her, thats what happened with Maria.
Yeah, I know the female fans didn't want him to have a steady girlfriend, but did they object to him being a bit flirtatious like he was in season 1? Remember, in season 1, he didn't have a steady girlfriend, but he'd often at least kiss/flirt/sleep with the leading ladies. Like in The Gauntlet, or in The Escape (remember that extra spring in his step after spending the night with that Russian spy? It was pretty obvious we weren't supposed to think they spent the night playing cards.) It seems odd that they removed a lot of that later on.
I kind of wonder if it was related to the fact that they were more and more concerned about making him a pure role model for kids. For example, in the first season, he kills and eats a lizard. In later seasons, it's implied that he's a vegetarian. And he certainly gets on a soapbox about tons of issues later in the series, so maybe they felt it would be wrong for this holier-than-thou guy to be shacking up with random women every week?

I've always found his character in later episodes Asexual as well. I can't really complain, I was 10 when the show stopped airing so I'm sure my mom wouldn't have let me watch with her if he was jumping in and out of bed with random women. I find shows are a lot better when they aren't completely focused on romantic relationships.

I don't like her. I like Mac to be a loner, I'm probably just jealous...
Anyway about Mac and Murdoc, I forget if it was my mum or one of my friends that said that. Actually I've said it too... This fanfic I really want to read

MacGyver fell for her even though she lied to him all along.
Did she lie or was she just not telling people about her past so that she could move on from it and not be instantly labelled? And is holding back details of past actions you had no control over and am now trying ot move on from really that bad?
Phoenix would have done extensive background and security checks before hiring her and if Pete had found anything unsavory which MacGyver didn't' already know about he would have told him. We already know from the Blow Out episodes where Pete let MacGyver see Nikki's private file, that Pete has no problem handing over personal information on people, probably a hang over from his DXS days, but still.

I didn't realize(til now) that the script had moved away from his flirtatious encounters of season 1 (my season 2 & 3 are in the mail).
But yes, it could well be about preserving that sorta squeaky clean, man next door image. And let's not forget, HIV/AIDS was becoming more & more prominent and in the news as the 80s raged on and thus the one night stands of the hippie era and late 70s/early 80s was becoming riskier by the week (or Mac Episode) ......

I actually feel bad for the actress. Maria wasn't that bad. I don't think she deserved all the hate that she got. I'm just not the biggest fan of "men-bashing", especially if the guy doesn't deserve it.
On the subject of Mac's flirting, I noticed that as well. But, I always kinda saw it as every season is Mac growing as a character. People can and do change like that. I did when I hit my 30's.

I really liked Maria one time. That's why I married them in my fanfic. But than I began to appreciate Nikki more and more. There are plenty of good female characters that would fit in Mac's life. Kate Connolly, Nikki, Deborah if she wasn't a killer, maybe Karen from The Endangered and Maria actually too.
When I began understanding Nikki's character a little more, I kinda shoved Maria back. Now I'm not sure if Mac-Maria relationship could work in the long end. Mac and Nikki, could've.
Maria had such a great first episode she starred in. The Wall is one of my favourite episodes and she made a good strong first impression. Maybe her acting wasn't good but she showed spirit and she could take care of herself. And than there is that god-awful MacGyver's Women episode and it's like they immediately changed it.
On the other hand what Beachbead says is true to. Mac needs an independent woman. The outdoorsy type like Kate or Deborah's cover. Or I think more importantly but that's more a personal opinion, someone who can fully understand him.

To be dead serious... if I were Mac (this is purely hypothetical), I wouldn't have passed that up either. I mean, 40 year old guy getting hit on by a hot 24 year old woman? He was probably thinking... "SCORE!!!" XD
Well, actually... he did say "score" at the end of The Wall, but it was to the video game.
Heh...

I'm sure there are many men who like women but feel uncomfortable around them. It has nothing to do with sexual orientation.
He was very comfortable around women. It's just that he didn't regard every eligible woman (breathing, aged 20 to 50, single, that sort of thing) as a potential love interest.
I can't understand women complaining about having a love interest. Women - and men for that matter - these days seem more interested in shipping characters together.
