Another excellent episode. Even though this episode seems all new this one is still floating in the same environment as The Challenge. Another look on street life, this time no drugs or racism but on prostitution. Cool episode. Snakeskin was it right? Crystal... I mean Jenny got whacked around pretty good. That was cool. She did a great performance. She also had an interesting past and the conversation she had with MacGyver that night was also very interesting. Very good episode.

snakeskin did try to get the girl to use hereoin at the end after she ran back to him. i also belive the apartment he was staying in was probably a drug influenced place. i voted good not one of my all time favorites. i love when jenny comes up to mac and pete and propositions them and pete says "arnt you supposed to be in school" then mac does the peek a boo pop up thing from behind the tv. great scene. i always wondered why when mac hooks the garbage can up to snakeskins caddilac why when he realizes that hes towing it he jams on the brakes. not the best move in the world. overall good ep showing a desperate runnaway trying to avoid her father and make some money. word1.png

"Runners" is another MacGyver episode that's somewhat slim on MacGyverisms, but very big on driving storyline and heart. Funny that this should be the episode of discussion for this week, because believe it or not, this is one episode I was thinking of in relation to something I was thinking about at church today. We really see MacGyver's care and compassion for all people in need in this episode. This is a Christlike trait that I think MacGyver had which is great- and that's simply that he was always loving others- and not selective of who. He invested his life into whoever needed his help- the kids involved in drugs, kids caught up in drinking and being neglected by parents, the homeless, and the teenage runaway prostitutes in this case. MacGyver took her into his home and helped her reform and find a much better living situation for her. And in the process, we learn something about Jennifer as well as MacGyver- as MacGyver unfolds his own painful memories of the deaths of his father and grandmother and his mom. What an appropriate name for the episode. MacGyver and Jennifer are both runners- one running from a physically bad situation and one running from painful memories and guilt. And in the end, you have to stop running and deal with things.

And to top it off, there are some cool MacGyverisms here- any time he opens anything, like a window, with the Swiss Army Knife is cool. And there's the whole tying the car to the garbage dump bit. biggrin.gif

All in all, excellent episode that dealt with a very heavy and touchy topic that I don't think I've seen dealt with much at all in other shows.

I love Mac's reactions as Jenny psycologically fillets him as they are talking on the houseboat, when he speaks of his parents, and when he answers Jenny's question about why he cares so much about what happens to her.

"I just do."

You can watch this scene in our files section. http://www.macgyveronline.com/pages/fv3.html

This episode is one of my favorites, but I have no idea why.

I guess its just a kind of feel good episode, which gives us some insight into MacGyver’s “inner workings”.

I too love the line where Jenny asks Mac why he cares about what happens to her, and he replies.. “I don’t know. I just do.”

I think we get to see a kind of domesticated “Big Brother” side of Mac in this one.

I also really like the scene where Mac first takes Jenny to his jeep and Snake turns up with the knife, and Mac deals to him.
Snake pulls the knife and it doesn’t even phase Mac.. he knew exactly what to do and how to handle both the knife and Snake… VERY kewl !!

I like this episode, too. I always enjoy the episodes where he helps someone who's vulnerable. He's so comforting to them, and he inspires confidence in them. It's especially touching because MacGyver himself has his own insecurities, and in these episodes, you get to see a more emotional side to him--not to mention some good acting by Rick! clapping.gif Watching him react to Jennifer's comments about his family, I could feel his mental anguish over his past. I felt like I was watching MacGyver--I didn't simply see Rick. That's the definition of a good actor! He made it very believable. biggrin.gif

I have that too and at some points -even after some time- you realise what the actual point is of the episode.

This is one of my faves from S4. What I really found interesting was that it continues this kind of story arc about Mac's past that started in Target MacGyver and continued in Phoenix Under Siege. We get to watch the story about Mac's parents and grandma slowly and painfully unfold over the course of the series, and then finally come to a resolution in Passages.

I got a kick out of Jennifer... for all the abuse she had suffered, she was pretty spunky. In case anyone's curious, yes, I did base Stacey in my fanfics partially on Jennifer.

Also really liked the insights that both Mac and Jennifer came out with. It was really interesting watching them figure each other out. Also, I liked this one because it was very much an ep that touched on the point of "You never know who you'll meet and how they'll touch your life, or how you'll touch theirs." That seemed to be a running theme throughout the show, and I loved it.

The MacGyverisms in this one were small but cool... I loved the bit with tying Snakeskin's car to the dumpster! I laughed so hard when I saw that.

Interestingly, this was also the very first ep of MacGyver I ever saw, so it kind of has a special place in my heart.

I just saw this episode for the first time a couple of days ago and I had to watch the dumpster chasing the Snakeskin's car twice! It was so funny, I fell off the couch laughing. The moral of that is though, never leave MacGyver alone near a dumpster and an enemy vehicle. He will go through the dumpster and something will definitely happen to the vehicle biggrin.gif

heres a question....

When MacGyver sends snake chasing after his car before he takes Jennifer away from the convention center.. its daylight.. but the very next scene has him driving up to the challenges club in the dark....

They take the scenic rout?? What'd they do in between daylight and dark?

The two places are far apart ?

The Jeep is slow ?

Jennifer distracts Mac from driving and he takes the wrong turn every time ?

They park somewhere and spend the afternoon chatting away ?

Possibly just a continuity issue... wink.gif

Maybe... there was a total eclipse of the sun! laugh.gif

More likely it was late afternoon when they left the convention center, and it was a very long drive to the Challenger's Club. happy.gif

What I wanna know is how many speeding laws did MacGyver break to beat Jennifer's cab to Snake's place! He must know ALL the shortcuts! biggrin.gif

I love this one, too! I can see Mac was totally unguarded against Jenny: from the time she picked his pocket to the time they talked about their parents in the houseboat. Also Mac's reaction when Jenny proposed to go back to his place: 'What??', he was panic and didn't know how to react!

No, that was when he started wearing other watches.

I always wonder about how he said he had to pawn his watch to pay for the gas. I wouldn't have thought an old plastic army watch would be worth enough to pay for gas. I know they're worth a pretty penny now because they're collectors items, but back then they where just a plastic worthless watch.

May be Mac successfully talked the gas station guy into letting him come back later to pay for his gas.

If I were that guy, I would use every mean to make sure he comes back! blush.gif

I find it interesting to see how he acts to this kind of environment. I like this episode, like a lot of people said I'm not sure why, I guess it shows Mac's caring side and how he deal's with certain situations socially in society.

This was a pretty heartbreaking episode. I normally don't like the whole "social issue" thing, but this one was well done. Even though the guy who played Snakeskin was a horrible actor, you could see past that and get the point of the episode. The poor girl really didn't have anybody to turn to. sad.gif And then Mac saves the day biggrin.gif

But isn't that the point? He wasn't looking to get involved in anything remotely connected to drugs, prostitution or guns. He doesn't like any of them, but he wasn't specifically trying to get anyone away from them. He was just helping Pete with something technical that was unrelated to drugs, prostitution or guns. And lo and behold, just as he thinks he might have some time off from being a hero, he has to be a hero. He can't even buy petrol without a heavily pregnant woman wanting his help to get away from her evil husband.

(Obviously, there was only one way the storyline could have gone. If he'd asked her how much she charged and for what, that would have gone down about as well as if he had kicked a dog or something.)

I found some TV Column Article from March 30, 1989, which says "The March 13 episode of "MacGyver," on the plight of runaway children, generated a 300 percent increase in calls to the National Runaway Switchboard, whose special hot line number was displayed at the end of the program ..."

Here's also video about that:

Nice. There seems so little behind the scenes stuff out there and yet there are plenty of interviews but they're all so rare.
