Straying more from the original. It's beginning to look more and more like the biggest thing the reboot is going to share with the original is the name....

This is a meant to be a reboot - a.k.a starting from scratch. Day One.
The further it is away from the 80s version - the better in my mind.
It stops people looking for ways to undermine, and spot minute discrepancies from the 80 version and people comparing the two shows. And ultimately you are only going to spoil the enjoyment of the new show.
No - the further this is away from the original, in my mind...the better. I can watch the two shows as two separate entities.
The show should be as afresh as it can be. Let's look upon it - as the show maturing with age and be accepted in the 21st Century.
RDA played MacGyver 1.0, and exceptionally well I might add. But his time... has come to an end.
This is MacGyver 2.0 and I am ready to accept Lucas as MacGyver... without comparison.
This is a new show, bring on the macgyverisms and let the adventures begin.
It's most certainly going to fail if they attempt to recreate verbatim the 80s based original. Can't do it. The only way it has a fighting chance is if they meld into 2016 with a lot of fresh perspective, sign of the times. and with a bit of respective connections to the past and to bridge the generation(s) gap. Again, they need to draw the advertiser's target buying market - pronto - to survive the initial season.
The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a man's determination.
Whether you think you can or you can't .... you're probably right!

Depends who those words are aimed at. It might be at his father, which might explain how he got captured.

Interesting viewpoint...
To be honest, I thought initially the line wasn't a real line from the script. (It confused me that it was handwritten; don't really know how ADR works.) But the fact that the original post on Twitter AND Instagram has already been deleted (not even 2 hours after the initial posting) says it all, doesn't it.
I caught the insta-post per accident (only 5 minutes after posting).... makes me wonder how much stuff already got deleted without anyone noticing. Even if I'm looking for the right hashtags, the interesting posts probably aren't there anymore...

Makes me wonder why they are even bothering to post stuff!
If it's meant to be kept under wraps surely the cast and crew would have been told that - maybe even contracted to it? And if they were told that why are they disobeying the order? Seems like a bit of a shambles on that front.

I know Mac was involved in the military at least as season one is concerned but his rank was never covered.
That's right and it wouldn't be the first time on TV that a civilian had been recruited into military service and immediately given an officers ranking.... Hawkeye in MASH was a captain.

MacGyver was referred to as a civilian by someone in season 2 I think, but I got a fairly non-civilian vibe from the kinds of missions he was involved in in the first season. I mean if he was like a secret agent or a special forces operative or whatever, would that be considered a civilian? Is James Bond a civilian?

Civilian: a person not in the armed services or the police force.
So it might be possible that should he be part of an organisation that is recluse from those dealings, he could be considered one. In the original show the Phoenix Foundation was not a "law enforcement" organisation. Yet they still had clearance in dealing with law enforcement entities. The DXS however was different. I think they did refer to them as "Government Agents".

Yeah. Not to get too off track, but has anyone involved with the show ever said why they made the sudden switch from the DXS to the Phoenix Foundation at the start of season 2? Was it an early attempt at softening the show, since the DXS was basically like the CIA or something and thus had an inherently darker, more morally gray edge to it compared with the philanthropic Phoenix Foundation which works on solving social and environmental issues?
