You know, after looking at this page, I got a little nostalgic. I miss the Air Jordans.

Spectacular compilation! Only typo I noticed was calling the MA-1 the FA-1, but excellent! I didn't realize you had figured out that mystery chrono watch! Awesome!

Posted by: Mac Jackson 2 November 2009 - 11:06 AM
Great job. It might be worth listing various shirts(ex:mock turtle neck), pants(ex:Cargo) and wrist bands also. I wish someone would do a list like that for SG-1 since there are a bunch of jackets that he's worn when off duty that I really want.

Yeah that's not a bad idea; Cargo pants may need to be a little more precise though, there's a lot of different styles of cargos.

Anyone recall which episodes he wore turtlenecks?

I'd love to know more about some of those "no collar" shirts he wore too. I always thought they were quite unique to MacGyver, because I've never seen anyone else wearing them.

Posted by: Mac Jackson 2 November 2009 - 02:05 PM
He wore mock turtlenecks in MANY eps like Jerico Games. More in the later seasons but def here and there through out the years. It should be fun finding out the specifics styles of cargo pants:) I'd also love to find that gray button up shirt he wore a lot such as in Deathlock, The Wish Child and The Stringer. He use to wear it open and I loved the way it layed open. I've never seen that type of shirt but would love one.

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 2 November 2009 - 02:14 PM
Yep that shirt and the "Chinese collar" shirts he wore in season 3.

Posted by: Mac Jackson 3 November 2009 - 04:06 PM
Which shirt are you refering to? Do you meen the kind with the short round collor that he wore a lot in season 3 and 4? I forget what the official name of those are called. After I saw those I made sure to get them. One of the good things about looking similar to RDA is that he shows me what to wear and what to avoid(handle bar mustash:) I've also tried to find the white button down sweat shirt he wore at home from season 3 on.

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 3 November 2009 - 04:18 PM
Yeah the season 3 shirts.

Posted by: dinoman 3 November 2009 - 04:28 PM
I love him wearing this kind of shirt and personally I like to wear them too.

Posted by: Mac Jackson 3 November 2009 - 04:34 PM
Yep but they are hard to find like the silky ones...see? there's another kind for the list:)

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 3 November 2009 - 05:28 PM
lol yeah but we need to know what they are first.

Details! we need details! laugh.gif

Posted by: dinoman 3 November 2009 - 06:47 PM
I did have 2 shirts with collars like that but not anymore. I bought them from a local fashion store and they're for ladies. I sometimes spot them at some stores selling garment samples exported to other countries and if I see them again I try to take a photo. smile.gif

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 3 November 2009 - 06:59 PM
blink.gif MacGyver wore girls clothes??!!

Posted by: dinoman 3 November 2009 - 08:00 PM
It doesn't have to be ladies only. This style is actually quite common in here although I don't see many men wearing this nowadays. I guess Mac's shirt is just a variation from the traditional Chinese shirt.

Posted by: Mac Jackson 3 November 2009 - 09:05 PM
Some of his shirts had no collar at all. The majority of the short round collar was not the chinese collar pictured above but a botton down with no material to fold over. Like I said, I've had them and made sure they were MacGyver acurate but they are hard to come by. sad.gif

The collar is sometimes refered to as a Mandarin collar or banded collar. Searching for mandarin collar shirts might give you somethingl. LL Bean does have a banded collar shirt that is similar to some that Mac wore under his flannel, and of course they do have a flannel shirt similar to the one he wore in the pilot episode.

That river drivers shirt is something else entirely but a great call non the less to be pointed out. I have a bunch of those(white ones in particular) always in stock:) That mens sport shirt seems to be the perfect example of the MacGyver-esqe stub-collar(I'm coining that name:) botton down shirts we were looking for Rocky. I need to look at the tags on my shirts and see if they say what official name is.

Hey Rocky don't forget to add the Nike Air Force IIs! These are the White/Grey one's Mac had in the fourth season. Then later he got a pair of Nike Air Delta Forces in White/Tech Grey! Both are classics! I own four pairs of Air Force IIs, maybe I'll post some pics later.

Yeah the river's driver is the style that he wore under several flannels. It is a really nice shirt for layering, especially in Minnesota and the northwoods. biggrin.gif

I have purchased several for my dad and husband and they both seem to like layering them with flannels or canvas shirts, similar to MAC.

This is great, the wardrobe page, can really help out for fanfiction. So actually the red bracelet in Stricktly Business is a watch? What about the gold one in Hind-Sight?

I'll see what I can do to gain more info.

Yes, in the season four episode "The Outsiders" you can get a good side shot of the AFIIs when Mac is standing on the loose dirt that gives way to his weight. Also in the S4 Ep "Fraternity of Thieves" When Pete gets a whiff of that poisonous substance Mac has to get some photo cleaner to counter the effects, there is a good shot of these when he kneels down to give Pete the drink he made.

Oh and don't forget to add the all black reebok low-tops MacGyver sported in the Third Season. A good episode to see these in is in "The Odd Triple". Before I forget, in the fith season MacGyver had these all Black casual boots that were about mid top. You can see a really good close-up of these in "Live and Learn." Again, in the seventh season Mac wore these along with the Nike Air Force 180. I'll send you a perfect side view of those to post. He wears these in multiple season seven eps.

I found out today that those River Diver shirts are typically called Henley shirts. I hope this helps:)

Just saw the final episode last night, and noticed Mac wearing a completely different type of watch than any other ep. I've seen before. Looked like a simple men's dress watch, leather strap, and some type of reddish logo on the dial (dead center). I'm wondering, since it was the last episode, if this was some kind of commerative watch, to celibrate the final episode???

Posted by: MacDriver 26 November 2009 - 02:18 PM
Yeah chain stores like American Eagle, Express, and Gap all sell Henleys very often- in fact they are probably on sale all of those places all of the time. I have a few of them myself.

Was looking in the Store

What Raider jacket type is closest to Mac's? The cowhide or the goatskin.

I noticed Mac's is a "distressed" brown leather, not sure of the type.

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 29 November 2009 - 03:00 PM
I presume your talking about the link to the Flight Suits site?
Color-wise, neither of them are close. But of the two options the goatskin is more of a true brown I think. And it's softer and lasts longer than the cowhide.

http://www.gibson-barnes.com/index.php?id=47

Your right about his jacket being distressed leather. I haven't had any real luck finding a Raider jacket with distressed leather to put in the store, but I'd love to know if anyone knows of an online store that sells them.

Yep, That looks like the condition of the one he wears on SG-1 when out of the mountain. It's also like some of the brown versions MacGyver wore in later seasons. I was thankful for the change since the worn original was on it's last legs:) Rocky's site also has the dark brown like that but they are SO expensive.
The cheapest version I found is here:

I think he wore this watch through much of the last season, so I don't think it has any special significance. If you watch closely that center rectangle bit in the middle is actually the digital display of the watch.

I'm pretty sure I had a watch of the same design as this one when I was a kid. It had the round face, but was digital with the display being a skinny display in the center of the face. Don't ask my what brand it was though.. got no idea.

Posted by: macgybl 6 December 2009 - 06:58 AM
I would guess that little pieces of wardrobe/props could be personal items

RDA might have worn that as his own watch, seeing as there wasn't a sitaution where they focused on it or it was a part of the scene.

Posted by: lee 8 December 2009 - 04:46 AM
I have a question. I found a jacket from alpha that is called MacGyver, it is misspelled, probably because of copyright.
I have never seen Mac wearing a similar jacket. Have you?

http://www.shopalphaindustries.com/Alpha/mens/products.php?item=122

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 8 December 2009 - 12:58 PM
Nope. Can't say I've ever seen that jacket worn by MacGyver.

Probably just a naming gimmick to try and get more sales, much like the MacGyver watch MP3 player watch you see around sometimes.

Posted by: Mac Jackson 8 December 2009 - 01:03 PM
I don't believe it does. It's either a coincidence by the designer having a similar name or a marketing ploy used to spark an image of MacGyver so people will buy it:)

Posted by: lee 8 December 2009 - 01:15 PM
That is what I thought as well, but still the style would fit Mac perfectly...IMHO

I just picked up an "Avirex" G2 Leather Jacket from ebay, will give a review once I get it.

It looks like this brand might be a brand viable to the show.

It was very popular in the 80's and actually the same brand was used for the "Top Gun" leather jacket also.

There is also one on ebay now that looks close if you search "g2 leather jacket"

Posted by: Beachbead 17 December 2009 - 03:54 PM
Avirex also did Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Terminator and as we know did alot in the show MacGyver's Jackets, like MacGyver's and Jack's too.

Posted by: lee 18 December 2009 - 07:53 AM
The owner of Avirex sold it to Mark Ecko and founded Cockpit USA, so you can buy the same G-2 jacket from them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avirex

http://www.cockpitusa.com/store/product.php?productid=17345&cat=395&page=1

I am thinking about buying it, but I like to try things on, I am not a fan of buying clothes online. If I got it right I think you can buy it only at there store in NYC and online.

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 18 December 2009 - 01:37 PM
We've got that exact jacket listed in our store, but it's currently out of stock. sad.gif

It seems you can get that jacket through several distributors these days. (online at least) wink.gif

Remember MacGyver's jacket had the Tartan lining in it, so if we find one like that we'll have our man...err.. jacket. smile.gif

Posted by: lee 19 December 2009 - 12:02 PM
Do you think that all these jackets that look like Macs will get that color over the years?
I think I read somewhere that Cockpit (Avirex) are made of antique lambskin that makes it older faster, so that it gets a what they call "100 mission look"
The color of Macs jacket looks to me like he never cleaned it of put conditioner on it. But leather crackes and dries with lack of maintenence.

Anyone have any experience with this?

QUOTE

blink.gif It does??

I've never seen a jacket crack or dry and I've never heard of anyone doing anything to a jacket either.

I have a leather jacket which is 15 years old, been warn plenty, in all weather and still going strong with no visible wear damage.

Posted by: lee 20 December 2009 - 12:57 AM
It does crack and dry because leather is a natural material, it has oils and they dry over time, just like our skin it can dry or crack. There are alot of different kinds of leather so maybe yours is more durable and dosen't crack alot.
I'm not an expert on leather but it seems to me that if we want a Mac look on a G2 jacket it has to be from lack of care. If we can ever get that light brown color anyway.

http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/11-16-2005-81564.asp

I asked cockpit about the color, here is the answer I got:

"The Z2129A is in brown but since it is “antique” lamb it will lighten somewhat as you wear it. We of course can custom make it but the cost is $1000 which you may not want to pay."

Here is the closest jacket I found, I think it should be somethin between G1 and G2, but the color is almost exaclty like Macs.

http://www.filson.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2518629&cp=2065674.2065685.3049637&view=all&parentPage=family

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 20 December 2009 - 02:35 AM
The look you're referring to is called distressed leather. It's a dyeing process used to make the leather look old/rugged/warn by darkening the natural lines, wrinkles, scars etc in the leather as would naturally occur over time.

My brown bomber jacket (and the one I had before this one) were both made in "distressed leather" style so they looked similar to MacGyver's jacket.

There's also a process called "antiqued leather" which dyes one color over another to create highlights in the leather to give an aged appearance. But I think the distressed look is closer to the MacGyver look for jackets.

Could be, it's made of deerskin which is apparently the thirst strongest leather available. unsure.gif

Not really. I found http://www.wingsamerica.com/index.cfm?Fuseaction=Detail&ID=613 but it's still too dark.

I just looked at the http://www.gibson-barnes.com/index.php?id=47 on the http://www.gibson-barnes.com/index.php?id=18&cat_id=18&prod_id=65 web site and the closest color they have is called Russet and is only available in Goatskin and Horsehide, but they don't offer Russet as a color option on that jacket, so you would need to make it a special order.

It's weird that you can find A2 type jackets with very similar color (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0001MX7BG?tag=macgyveronlin-20&camp=213381&creative=390973&linkCode=as4&creativeASIN=B0001MX7BG&adid=1K8N6EHD4YN3N7QZ0NXV&), but any G2 jackets all seem to be darker leather.

Yep, according to Wikipedia, the Avirex company was formed in 1975 for the purpose of producing the WW2 styled jackets and aviation related garments.

So the seller of your jacket could be quite right that it's a 20 year old jacket.

According to the http://www.marceckoenterprises.com/avirex/ the company has also been supplying combat aviation gear to the armed forces under a direct contract to the DoD. So it would seem these guys are the real deal.

Having said that. I haven't seen an Avirex jacket with a tartan lining yet, which makes me wonder if MacGyver's jacket was in fact an Avirex, or some other brand.

The first jacket hasn't got the weather flap under the zipper like the second one (and MacGyver's) has and the color looks a bit off.

Hmmm.. I'm thinking sportys might be a better link from our store than Flight Suits. The jacket looks more accurate to MacGyvers.

Posted by: lee 21 December 2009 - 01:39 PM
Yep, Sporty's "B-2 Bomber Jacket" looks the closest to me (or Cockpits G-2 after 10 years of wear), the lining is not so important to me, if the lining was right then it would be the same jacket, witch I think we will never find.

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 21 December 2009 - 02:28 PM
Yeah I've just changed the store link to point to sporty's although I did notice the color of the jackets in their product photos is darker than the jacket in the page photo, but it's still a closer than Flight Suits colors.

After seeing this photo of an Avirex G-2 on ebay, I'm 90% sure Mac's jacket was an avirex G-2.

Note the plaid lining.

MacGyver wears brown leather jacket in superbowl in 2006.
Is it deferent from the one MacGyver wears in TV show?
It looks like normal A-2 flight jacket.

Yes the lining.

Did the listing have any information about the jacket? like year, specific styling or anything?

Nothing on the year or style

Only thing I have is the attached

The closest jacket I found (exept for the patch) that was not online is this one, and I bought it.
It will do until I order the Cockpit jacket.
What do you guys think?

I'd love to know more about some of those "no collar" shirts he wore too. I always thought they were quite unique to MacGyver, because I've never seen anyone else wearing them.

Cool! I missed this thread during my hiatus. Just finished reading it.

That style of collar is called a band collar (not banded). It's distinct from the Mandarin collar -- the Mandarin collar has a higher stand, typically at least an inch, and is (obviously) inspired by traditional Chinese menswear. The Mandarin collar has rounded front edges, does not overlap, and does not usually button, although it may have frog closures.

The band collar is a Western style. Standard men's shirt collars have two pieces: the band, sometimes called the stand, and the fall. The band is the part that stands up next to the neck and buttons, and the fall is the part that folds over and has the collar points. In high-end tailoring, they are separate pattern pieces.

When you leave off the fall altogether, it's a band collar. In older traditional formal men's wear, all shirts have band collars, and the fall is a completely separate item that fastens on with studs. (Stop snickering. Those are little button oojahs, similar to cufflinks.) When you read 19th century literature and there's a mention of a man 'putting on a fresh collar', that's the garment he's changing.

Band collars overlap and button with a standard buttonhole and a single button that's often smaller than the other buttons on the shirt.

I quite like the band collar; it's a bit less formal, especially when left unbuttoned. The costumers on MacGyver tended to look for clothing combinations that had a certain element of style but were distinctly informal.

Also, on the buttoning: if the shirt overlaps right-over-left, it's a man's shirt. If it overlaps left-over-right, it's a woman's shirt, even if every other point of construction is identical.

Does that still apply today? I remember my mother telling me that years ago when I was a kid (probably about 8-9 years old).

Posted by: Mac Jackson 16 January 2010 - 03:42 PM
Yep. It's a universal truth:)

Posted by: MacBeth 16 January 2010 - 08:15 PM
As Mac J said, yes. It's held for a couple of centuries and isn't likely to fall out of use any time soon, until we somehow eliminate buttons.

Although plenty of women wear men's shirts, men try not to wear women's shirts, even if the only difference is the overlap. How's that for a double standard?

Posted by: Traveller 18 January 2010 - 08:17 AM
Funny. I thought it was the other way around. Right over left for the women, left over right for the men.
And does that apply for buttons on the pants too, by the way?

Hee hee hee! You don't have anything against zippers, do you?

roller.gif

I don't know if it is true, but the explaination I got (as a curious child) when I first asked about button-directions was that women's buttons were put on 'backwards' because long ago, women who could afford to buy clothing had ladies-in-waiting to help them get dressed, so the buttons were made to be easier for them to handle.

Seems to me to be a strange custom to still practice hmm.bmp

Probably an old wives' tale, anyway... biggrin.gif

Posted by: Traveller 19 January 2010 - 02:01 AM
Yay, Loth! That's a classic line from 'Witness': 'Got anything against zippers?'

A pity they didn't put some Amish clothes on Mac. The pants a bit too short, the breeches, and the hat. Especially the hat. He would have looked great.. ahm, plain. A very special kind of plain, I might add.

Ack, I wrote it backwards! Yes. Right over left for women, left over right for men. It applies to pants as well as shirts, and also applies to plackets even when the garment has another kind of fastener, including zippers, snaps, hooks, etc.
QUOTE (Lothi)

That's very close to accurate. Tailoring conventions are set by the wealthy and fashionable; wealthy ladies were dressed by their maids, while wealthy men dressed themselves, assisted by a valet. Also, fashionable women's clothes fastened in the back, while men's clothes fastened in the front. Combined with righthandedness being the majority, this led to the right/left differentiation that still applies today.

As to why it still applies: the basic construction of clothing is extremely conservative and resistant to change. Fashion makes superficial tweaks, but most of the basic garments we wear haven't changed fundamentally in centuries. The most recent major innovation was the change in the early 20th century from corsets to bras . . . which didn't affect Mac's wardrobe at all. (Murdoc, on the other hand . . . )

sakopen.gif Mac must have had a huge closet or rented an auxillary storage place just for his gear. I've noticed that Mac wears a jacket that I have had since the 80's. The jacket is olive green and has a red plaid interior lining. It is made by Eddie Bauer and is nice and warm being lined with EB's goose down. It looks like when the show moved to Vancouver this jacket may have replaced other ones that were used in So Cal since it was probably a lot cooler shooting in the fall and winter. Additional details include brass sleeve buttons. I don't get to wear mine much anymore having moved from a medium to a large as a result of a fatty food diet and a propensity to drink beer instead of diet soft drinks and juice.

So, digging up a really old thread here:

Has anyone watching MacGyver lately paid attention to his cargo pants and khakis? We've found out the brand of the leather jacket, so narrowing it down on the brand of his pants might be the next big mission.
Modern military-issue pants don't seem to be right, as they appear to be too baggy in thelegs. Mac's pants always appeared to be really well fitting.

Oh, and look what I discovered in the German Eddie Bauer store:

I think that's the one in "Birthday". There are some good shots of his cargo pants and their details (like buttons an some sort of clip in the are of his calves) in "The Golden Triangle".
And judging form the soles of his boots and their diamond pattern, Mac is wearing USMC Roughouts/ Boondockers.

They can be further sub-divided by whether they have buttons or studs, and the number of buttons (e.g. 2, 3 or 4 button "plackets"..)

The best places to find these "undershirts" ( tongue.gif ) of the type that MacGyver would wear could probably be among the thermal tops in camping/outdoors or sporting stores.

I think that post was talking about the outer shorts with the "Chinese style" collar, not the undershirts.

Posted by: Bushwalker 17 March 2012 - 05:05 AM
Just to be pedantic, for a moment tongue.gif ~

Those "Chinese" style shirts aren't exactly "collar-less", as they do have short stand up collars (only a centimetre or two, but it's still a collar, whereas the Indian (Nauru) collars are a few centimetres in height, and the higher "Mandarin" collars can be a few inches..).

Those short/low-collared shirts can also be seen in places like Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia, as well ~ so that's conceivably where MacGyver could have picked them up?

And somebody had mentioned those "collarless" shirts early on in this thread..

On the subject of Mac's Cargo pants. I know they bought some of his clothing from Banana Republic. Remember when Banana Republic used to actually sell adventure style clothing instead of the ho-hum stuff they sell now. I haven't shopped at BR in over 15 years for that very reason.

Now on to other pieces of clothing Mac wore.

In "Mask of the Wolf" the big blue winter jacket Mac is wearing is a NorthFace jacket. How do I know, I went out and bought one right after the episode originally aired. I figured if I wanted one I better get it quick, as there was no way of telling how long it was purchased before the episode was filmed. I will forward the specifics from the jacket tag if you'd like them.

Mac also wore black Sorel brand boots, with the gators already built in, in several episodes, including "Mask of the Wolf". I own a pair of these boots as well and will forward the information.

I have information on other items he wore, which I'll share as soon as I can.

Hasn't one of Mac's brown leather bomber jackets got a lining with red polka-dots? Is there picture, preferably a close-up of the lining, somewhere around here? I've won an auction on a leather jacket on the bay, which has got button and not the zippered cargo pockets. As I don't like the polyester lining I'm thinking about changing it to something more Mac-like.

I owned a pair of the NIKE Court Force High Tops just like Mac wore. I remember pausing the VHS recording and scrutinizing the close-up of the shoes when Mac stepped on the pressure plate. I wore the heck out of them and they were long ago thrown away. I know, I know . . . stupid, stupid, stupid.

As far as the black NIKE high tops he wore, back in the day when I called the wardrobe department, when they were filming in Vancouver, the head wardrobe guy told me they were purchased in Canada, which explains why I couldn't find a pair here in Colorado. I took a picture (a polaroid taken of the paused vhs tape) to several different shoe stores and no one had ever seen them. I'd still like to have a pair just to add to my costume and prop collection.

Nope. There is no writing, no model number anywhere on the goggles other than SCOTT on the headband and VENTURI PANORAMA on the bottom of the lense on the left side.

When I bought them they were loose, no box nor bag. It's been so long and I can't remember for sure, but I may have bought them during the Gart Sports SNIAGRAB (bargains spelled backwards) Sale.

Over the years I've looked for another pair at thrift stores but haven't had any luck.

It's taken me 28 years. 28 looooong years, but I finally found it!

The other night, while posting the thread about the cargo pants Mac wore, I decided to do a quick search on eBay for a Banana Republic vest like MacGyver wore during the Opening Gambit of "Thief of Budapest" and "The Gauntlet" . . . and I found one in a size large. The seller had it listed as a woman's vest, but I knew it wasn't. I wasn't expecting it until next week, but when I got home from work this afternoon there it was outside my front door. happy_dance.gif

I know this find is not as impressive or meaningful to most, like the discovery of the Chevignon jacket, but to me it's a fantastic find. I've looked for this particular style since 1985. I've had several Banana Republic vests throughout the years that I've worn on various "adventures" but now I finally have one just like Mac wore, which will added to my MacGyyver replica collection. WOOHOO! w00t.gif

The vest is in EXCELLENT CONDITION. It looks like it came right off the store rack.

Picking up on this old post: I've been thinking the same thing and I own a couple of these boots (look at my avatar), albeit not from Eastmanleathers (they don't seem to sell them any longer).
The Red Wings in the shop look different because they have a cap toe and Mac's boots don't. Were the Red Wings in the 80's produced without the cap toe? If not, then I'd say Mac wore some slightly modified Boondockers.

P.S.: The last link to the wardrobe page doesn't work.

Posted by: KiwiTek 23 March 2013 - 02:24 PM
I think your right Fellow Traveler. If you look at the two pictures below, the Boondockers like identical to MacGyver's boots.

It would seem that Boondocker is a style of boot used by the US Marine Corps in WW2. I thought it was a brand, but they are made by various companies.

Posted by: Fellow Traveler 24 March 2013 - 01:56 AM
And they are not quite SA. Mac's boots have only four eyelets, then the fast-lacing, with probably another 2 or 3 eyelets. If I find the time, I might check the early episodes, I seem to remember that we can get a good glimpse of the boots in "The Golden Triangle".

If you do a Google image search for boondocker boots you find that there are quite a few variations of the boot made by different companies (boondocker is a style like G2 flight is a style of jacket) so the number of eyelets and hooks will be specific to whoever made those boots.

In fact that picture I posted above seems to be the only boots which have the hooks at the top. All the other boots are just eyelets right the way up.

So I think the question is really "What brand of boots are they".

Posted by: MacFan092985 28 March 2013 - 07:36 PM
After spookin' around on the internet, most Boondockers have a leather heelcap, which Mac's did not.

From what I've read about Boondockers, they weren't that comfortable and caused blisters, which is one of the reason the Navy discontinued them.

Are you sure? I think you can just see a seam at the back of Mac's boot. Yeah, it's a bit blurry, but there might be one...

Posted by: MacFan092985 29 March 2013 - 05:47 AM
Right, there is a seam. The ones I've found online, have a separate piece of leather that makes up the heelcap, stitched on top of the main piece of leather where the lace holes are. I know there are different versions of the same boot style, I was just passing along what I've been able to find.

I'm friends with several WWII re-enactors and they all have one version or another of the Boondockers boots. I'll take a closer look at them the next time I see them.

Posted by: Fellow Traveler 29 March 2013 - 06:09 AM
You should show them the picture. Maybe they are able to identify the boots. These re-enactors are usually pretty knowledgable about close-enoughs and reproductions of era clothing.

just added the ski goggles to the Wardrobe page. Anxiously waiting to hear more about those boots.

Thanks for adding the goggles to the wardrobe page. smile.gif

I think I've identified the Australian Duster MacGyver was wearing at the beginning of the episode "Phoenix Under Siege".

In looking through a Banana Republic catalog, dated Fall 1987, I found an Authentic Australian Bushman's raincoat. The description reads as follows:

During the Aussie rainy season - known Down Under as "The Wet" - a jackeroo's oilskin rain coat is nearly as vital as his horse. It's vented to keep the saddle dry, built with a rooflike cape for run-off, and made from a historically tough fabric. A Scottish sailmaker created oilskin in 1793 by soaking sailcloth with linseed oil to make it shed water. A wonderfully effective process, but we've made it even more efficient. Our Bushman's Raincoat is made in England from fabric supplied by the same Scottish sailmaking company, using the finest long-fiber cotton with a special oil-and-wax finish. A true miracle fabric - waterproof yet breathable, and nearly as durable as Ayers Rock. The jackeroos commonly keep their raincoats for 20 years or more.

Mac's jacket is the same shade of Khaki, has a shiny finish, as described above, has the same "Throat Latch", two large flap pockets, adjustable wrist strap and exterior storm-flap.

When watching the episode, you can see that the weight of the jacket is less than that of a traditional denim cowboy duster. Light can be seen passing through the shoulder cape.

Again, like with Jack's leather jacket, I'm confident this is what Mac wore, given that numerous other pieces of clothing worn by the various actors came from Banana Republic.

What do you think?

I think I've seen some comments in here of people buying the retro high tops etc on Ebay. It would be nice if there was a retro store which sold all this kind of thing though wouldn't it.

There's 11 listings right now on Ebay under the search term "NIKE Court Force High Tops". wink.gif

I found another jacket, identical to that worn by Mac during an episode of Season 4. I will post a picture as soon as possible, hopefully tomorrow.

When "The Secret of Parker House" originally aired I remember thinking Mac's red jacket, while simple in design, was cool. I had a red jacket that I bought at a GAP store, that was similar in design, that I wore whenever I wanted to emulate MacGyver's style.

Over the years whenever I would re-watch "The Secret of Parker House" or see a red jacket of similar design, I'd think it would be cool if I could have found the same jacket Mac wore.

Fast forward to last week. While watching "The Secret of Parker House" I got a wild hair and figured I'd check eBay. I typed in red cotton jacket mens, figuring that description would be broad enough. As it turned out, it was too broad, with over 2,500 listings, so I started including designer names ie: Banana Republic, J. Crew, Eddie Bauer and L.L. Bean. As it turned out L.L. Bean was what I was looking for. Below is a photo of the jacket I bought, which exactly matches the one worn by Mac. It is a size large, which given RDA's height, I assume is the size he wore.

The jacket appears red on the episode (due to the set lighting) and in my photo (due to the camera flash). The true color of the jacket is closer to burgundy or wine. The jacket's features are identical to Mac's.

- ribbed cuffs
- ribbed waist band
- two angled slash pockets
- identical matching zipper pull tab
- collar button tab
- two collar buttons (not visible in photo, but will be added later)

Here is a photo of the collar buttons and the inside collar tag.

When watching "The Secret of Parker House" the buttons can be seen briefly, very briefly at the point where Mac returns from his Jeep with the bags of groceries and he's yelling for Penny to open the door, which has mysteriously slammed closed on him.

I thought Mac's chronograph was a Seiko, but I found this page today. I'm guessing he must have chopped and changed.

Thoughts?

(Sorry if this has been discussed elsewhere!)

It's a common design for watch faces. If you https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=chronograph+watch&safe=off&client=firefox-a&hs=tRQ&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=KgaEUqL7G8XLkgX1xoHIBg&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1666&bih=918 you'll find hundreds of different watches with that face layout.

As you can see from the below pictures, MacGyver's watch is similar but not the same.

Your right.

Very interesting. I can't help thinking that might actually be RDA's own watch. I recall seeing him wearing it in an interview, which I thought, at the time, may have been the Seiko, but now I'm thinking it was this watch.

Now can we identify the episode this shot is from so I can research it further?

Posted by: MacFan092985 13 November 2013 - 07:05 PM
I just watched "Legend of the Holy Rose: Part I" and realized that Zoe is wearing either the same vest or the same style of vest that Mac wore several times during the first season. The only difference, Zoe's vest is missing the metal carabiner and the metal d-ring, positioned below the two top pockets seen on Mac's. My guess is that the wardrobe dept. simply cut them off. Possibly to make Zoe's vest look just enough different from Mac's?

* I couldn't find an image that showed her vest up close enough to view the details of it.

I think your right Jedi. I don't recall seeing that blue shirt warn in any other episode. hmm.bmp

Posted by: Grazer 13 November 2013 - 07:14 PM
Wouldn't Mac's vest look really big on Zoe? There's quite a size difference isn't there?

Posted by: MacFan092985 13 November 2013 - 08:19 PM
That is true, she is somewhat smaller than he is, that's why I wrote,

Funnily enough I just watched Black Corsage earlier today and he is wearing the Seiko through most of the episode (identified by the small white dials and gold outer ring clearly seen towards the end whilst he is rigging the"space booth") so if it is from that episode it must be a one off or "freak occurrence".

Posted by: Nfharris 15 November 2013 - 01:06 PM
He also appears to not be wearing the Seiko in Halloween knights. I would guess its the same watch as in the photo above (blue shirt) which I think is the Breitling.

Posted by: KiwiTek 15 November 2013 - 03:22 PM
That capture is from the Black Corsage episode when Mac and Frank are sitting at the outside diner table.

The watch is also warn in Cease Fire and Children of Light.

You can tell the difference between watches by looking at the front buttons. The Breitling has 3 knobs on the front while the Seiko only has 2. Also the Breitling is a chunkier looking watch.

Not to mention how many different shoes he wore.

I don't think MacGyver would even except a watch of that expense. He'd rather give that money to a charity.

There's only really 4 jackets we see regularly through the show, so does that mean the others were purchased for specific purpose/mission and then given to second hand stores?

hmm.bmp I'm not ready to drink the LL Bean Kool-aid quite yet on this one. Mac's collar has a notch cut while the LL Bean portrayed is an angled straight design.

Posted by: MacFan092985 14 January 2014 - 05:34 PM
I'll verify things once I get home and take another look at the jacket. It could just be the way the collar laid when I took the photo or the way it laid when
MacG.gif wore it that makes it look different. Every other feature of the jacket MacG.gif wore and the one I own, match (ribbed cuffs, ribbed waistband, angled pockets, metal zipper pull tab, collar buttons, collar button tab).

Yes, that is very similar Matt and a smart looking jacket too. I've picked up a couple of FarWest Gore-tex jackets at Value Village recently that aren't too far off the mark either. FarWest is a British Columbia company and who were getting quite prominent back in the late 80s/early 90s .... so I wouldn't be surprised if some of their lines made it into the MacGyver wardrobe depo. Having said that MacFan is probably spot on with the match and the angle/light making all the (negligible) difference.

I just saw that the company's inception was in 1977 so you could definitely be right about some of the products making their way into the show. This is especially true since filming locations were in Canada. Could you maybe post a picture of the jacket you purchased? Curious to see what it looks like. I've always wished the red coat had more screen use than just "The Secret of Parker House." I agree, MacFan is probably right about the angle, etc.

I just watched the first half of "Secret of Parker House" and the apparent difference in the cut of the collar on Mac's red jacket and that of the one I own is all based on the angle it is viewed from.

I checked online and there are very few close-up photos of RDA wearing that jacket, whether they are from the specific episode or press release/promo photos.

Below is a close-up of the right side of the collar. When you watch "Secret of Parker House" you can see the collar matches.

You almost had me convinced, Macfan ... and then I put the two side by side and blew them up a bit. I clearly see a right-angled notch happening in the Mac jacket that (to my eyes & geometry proficiency) isn't there in the LL Bean cut. I tell you what, I'll watch Parker House again tonight and freeze frame all the telltale frames .... and make a decision one or another in the morning. idea.jpg

Posted by: Joe SAKic 16 January 2014 - 07:06 PM
Here are my two thrift store finds. Both FarWest goretex (not unlike the Eddie Bauer Goretex shells of the day actually) ... a little more robust than the LL Bean and probably would have kept Mac a bit drier in that gullywasher of a storm that he got caught in at Parker House.

Posted by: MacFan092985 16 January 2014 - 07:52 PM
Hey Joe,

After you posted that picture, I thought the same thing, but after watching the episode and freeze framing it every chance I could to get a good look at the collar I'm convinced it's an optical illusion of sorts, based on the way the collar lays / appears in multiple other scenes. I think what appears to be a right angle is caused by the collar laying relatively flat against his collarbone. I'll see if I can recreate the same look with my jacket and post the photo here. wink.gif

By the way, I like the red jacket of yours on the right the best.

SO... we've decided that the jacket isn't the same as MacGyver's?

Posted by: Joe SAKic 18 January 2014 - 06:27 PM
No, I believe they are the same now. At least the collars seem to match. Unless somebody can see another potential discrepancy, they'd I'd say we can be 99.9% (100% if we could get a snap of the neck label) certain that it's as the LL Bean jacket in MacFan's possession. LL Bean was hot back then, as was Northface & Eddie Bauer too.

Posted by: KiwiTek 18 January 2014 - 08:45 PM
If you look at the capture you can clearly see a tab or split in the collar which isn't caused by any optical effect because the collar is stretched out straight and tight over his head in that scene. Also if you line the two capture images up you can clearly see the "tab" is sticking out at a right angle to the rest of the collar.

Everything else seems to match the jackets though so is it possible that the company made different versions of the same jacket with subtle variations?

Note the collar has a split section

This could definitely be the case. For example, the two London Fog jackets I mentioned earlier are the same jacket but have slightly different labels on the inside. Clothing companies frequently make changes to their products, even if they're only minor changes. Even all the Chevignon G-2's that lexscape owns have slightly different aviator pictures on the inside where the Chevignon label is. I wouldn't be surprised at all if this is the same jacket, but maybe with a slightly different collar.

Your Honor, I object. huh.gif I further request time to take a picture of myself with the jacket I own over my head, like Mac did, to prove that the collars match . . . I hope.

Posted by: MacFan092985 29 January 2014 - 06:19 PM
Upon further review of the images, I have found a difference in the positioning of the collar buttons, which could lend support to the notch/tab on the right side of the collar. Those on Mac's jacket appear to be more in line with the front edge of the collar, while those on mine are set a little further back from the edge of the collar.

It's cool with me if this particular jacket is removed from the Wardrobe Page. It's close but not exact, or perhaps a note could be made that everything matches, except for the right collar tab/notch.

To quote Maxwell Smart, "Missed it by that much". sad.gif

If anyone is interested in the Scully G-2, there is a really nice looking distressed one on eBay right now at this link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Scully-G-2-B-2-Flight-Bomber-Brown-Leather-Jacket-Macgyver-/171230215653?pt=US_CSA_MC_Outerwear&hash=item27de1dbde5

The seller is calling it a G-2 and mentions MacGyer in the title and description. It's a size small but I can say (having owned 2 size small jackets from Scully) that their size small definitely fits more like a medium (or 40-42 regular). In fact, the seller mentions this as well; further describing it as a jacket that can fit a person with a 44 in. chest who is 6'1" and 180 lbs.

To help put it more in perspective, I am 5'10" and weigh 152 lbs. and the small is a little big on me. I've posted all this in the Mystery Solved! thread on page 3 which can be found here: http://www.macgyveronline.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=6557&st=60#entry1000063996

Okay, I heard back from a few L.L. Bean reps. From what they told me, the jacket I have, that is posted on the MacGyver's Wardrobe page, is NOT the same style of jacket RDA wore on "Secret of Parker House". Below is the description of what I believe is the jacket like RDA wore.

Dear Lance,

Lorraine has gone home for the day.  I will pick up where she left off.

In the late 1980s, L.L.Bean offered a Twill Outing Jacket for men and women.  One of the colors was a bright red.

I am sorry but I was unable to identify the discussion forum on the macgyveronline forum.

The jacket we sold had a throat latch under the stand-up collar on the wearer's right.  The throat latch could be button closed with one button that was located under the collar on the wearer's left or folded back under the collar and buttoned in place.

I hope this provides useful information for you.

I looked.  It could be the same jacket.  I have no new information to share.

While I think the jacket Mac wore is the bright red Twill Outing Jacket, we'll just have to wait until someone comes across one to know for sure. I'm definitely keeping an eye out for it.

Does anyone know how the Scully Jackets are sized? Are they true to size or do they run big/small?

Reason I ask there is a nice bomber jacket available online at the moment for a good price, but it's a size 50, and i'm a size 44...

I've tried checking the Scully main site but there is no size chart on there.

Reason I ask there is a nice bomber jacket available online at the moment for a good price, but it's a size 50, and i'm a size 44...

I've tried checking the Scully main site but there is no size chart on there.

It depends on if the Scully jacket has a white or black label inside the jacket underneath the collar. It will be either a black square label with gold lettering or a white square label with gold lettering. The ones with the black labels run true to size but the newer versions with the white labels fit much bigger. A size small in the earlier version fits me just fine and a I'm a 152 lb. male. However, the newer version of the size small is really big on me. Even if it's an older Scully jacket, the difference between a size 44 and 50 will be significant. There will be an even bigger size difference if it is the version that's available now. I also wanted to mention that these, like the Avirex G-2's, were offered at some point in both lettered sizes (s,m,l,xl, etc.) and numbered sizes (40, 42, 44, etc.) I cannot confirm this, but it appears that the one Scully is selling now is only available in lettered sizes.

Here's a copy of something I mention in the Mystery Solved! thread from Jan. 30th 2014:

"If anyone is interested in the Scully G-2, there is a really nice looking distressed one on eBay right now at this link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Scully-G-2-B-2-Fli...=item27de1dbde5

To help put it more in perspective, I am 5'10" and weigh 152 lbs. and the small is a little big on me." The actual thread that this post is from can be found here on the bottom of page 2: http://www.macgyveronline.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6557&st=50&hl=scully#.U07tsKL4Jss

The style for that Scully jacket is 714-12. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. I have an early version along with a newer one so I may be able to help with this.

Hi,
I’m currently looking for MA-1 Flight Jacket in this navy Blue color. I assume it’s very dark blue, almost black, but I can only find black and olive models.
Is it still in produce?

Second question, have you noticed MacGyver wearing any kind of gloves, other than for skiing?

He wore white cycle gloves in The Lost Amadeus and cream woollen fingerless gloves in the gambit of the Pilot.

He may have been wearing gloves in the start of the spoilers episode when he's out in the snow.

In the episode "The Invisible Killer" Mac wore leather work gloves. There are many different versions of these gloves. Wells Lamont makes gloves like this, but their version has a leather patch sewn onto the palm, which Mac's did not.

Thanks a lot :-)

Is there any particular episode where it is clearly visible, that Mac wares Navy Blue MA-1 Jacket?
Every time I think it's dark blue, in next shot I'm almost certain it's black...

I think The Negotiator has some good views of it.

Submitted For Your Consideration.

Given that a fair share of the clothing MacGyver wore was from Banana Republic, I think the warm-up jacket he's wearing in the picture below matches the one offered by Banana Republic back in the 80s. Mac wore this same warm-up jacket in "Blow Out". I can't prove the one Mac's wearing is in fact from Banana Republic but they look the same to me.

I had a pair of those and wore them until they fell apart. I remember pausing the VHS recording of "Blow Out" on the close up of Mac stepping on the pressure plate, so as to get as close of a look as I could at every detail. I then went out and bought a pair. I wish I would have bought two pair and kept one packed away so I could now add it to my MacGyver collection. Oh well, live and learn.

I wish I could get a replica of the custom made black leather jacket that Mac wore primarily in season 4. I've looked on ebay and amazon for similar ones. There are a few that are close but not close enough. Everytime I see him wearing that I say, "Damn, that looks good!"

Very good question.

It looks really familiar and I'm pretty sure I remember seeing people wearing these back in the 80's (my father may have even had one) but I have no idea what brand it is.

From the picture it looks like the watch has Chronosport Navigator written on it, but I can't find anything about that brand of watch.

Not to speak for Mac1977, but when "MacGyver" was up in Vancouver, I called the production office and spoke with Tommy Welsh, the Costume Department Supervisor. He said that one of the brands of clothing Mac wore was Levi's. He also said Mac wore clothing from Banana Republic, Eddie Bauer, L.L. Bean, Nike and Reebok to name a few.

I know the sport coat Mac wore in "Lost Love" from acquired from a company called Academy Clothes.

Paula, you're right it is a Levi's jean jacket. I've done searches on eBay and found several, just haven't bought one. Using the word "vintage" in your search. If you're looking for one as close to Mac's as possible, pay attention to the vertical seams on the front and the back. I've found there are slight differences in how they are positioned.

Dalton, Jack of Spies

The Eraser

Fraternity of Thieves - at the end when they're heading off to court.

What I wouldn't give to be able to go through Paramount or CBS studios wardrobe and prop department looking for items worn / used on "MacGyver". While I'm sure after all these years, some of the items no longer exist, I'd be willing to bet some of the items are still housed in the massive warehouses each studio has.

Here is a screen cap from "Two Times Trouble" showing the back of mac's Jean jacket, You'll notice that the vertical seams are straight and end and the waist just inside of where the two waist buttons are (circled in red).

I doubt whether the Phoenix Foundation would have Mac wearing a cheap version of Alpha's MA-1 Flight jacket, such as is linked in the MacGyverOnline Store:
http://www.macgyveronline.com/pages/store.html#macgear
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003MWSZ00/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003MWSZ00&linkCode=as2&tag=macgyveronlin-20&linkId=NZJMCPISG6ZNBTUY

I think they'd let Mac buy the genuine article, the one that was built to Mil Spec.
http://www.alphaindustries.com/mens-flight-jackets/alpha-industries-ma-1-flight-jacket.htm

You can get it on Amazon now.

FWIW I've got the Sage Green version and I LOVE it! thumbsup.gif

Back in my junior and senior years in high school, I owned a navy blue Alpha MA-1 jacket like Mac's and up until today I couldn't remember what happened to it, I thought I had donated it to DAV or some such organization but wasn't sure. Then today I was talking with my mom about what dry cleaner her and my dad use and she said one of two they go to is in the same shopping center as their grocery store. It was at that point it hit me, that same @#&* dry cleaner had lost my jacket years ago after I took it in to get cleaned. What's worse . . . they only gave me about 1/3 of the jacket's value because they considered it "used" even though it was in excellent condition (looking at the one I owned and ones in the surplus store you'd never have been able to tell the difference) and the same style was and is still being made. mad.gif

Does anyone know if Mac was ever shown wearing his old Army uniform (in a flashback, etc.)?

Posted by: denizen 16 October 2017 - 08:08 PM
I vaguely recall him wearing one in Obsessed & in a flashback in Lost Love.

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 17 October 2017 - 12:18 AM
There's no scenes of MacGyver in his army days what I can recall. There are episodes where he wears army camouflage clothing, but most times its in present day.

The flashback scene in Lost Love is never made clear if it's during his army days or not, but considering he was in bomb disposal while in the army it seems more likely that an assignment to blow up whatever that place was wouldn't have been during his army days.

Posted by: Barry Rowland 17 October 2017 - 05:18 AM
It's kind of strange that there wasn't any flashback scenes. The mid 80s were big into Vietnam, and I remember a lot of Magnum PI flashbacks. Now that you mention it, I recall there being very little references made about Mac's service time.

Getting a military haircut for flashbacks would really impact the continuity in the present day shots in episodes that were shot after the one with the flashback scenes. It would take months for his hair to grow back.

I always got the feeling that it was an idea for a possible background story in season 1 that just hung around after they had decided not to follow through with it due to already having mentioned it in an episode.

Either that or they really didn't know what to do with it or explain it properly in connection with him hating guns, although they did address that a little with lines such as.....

QUOTE (Tough Boys)
"For someone who hates violence you seem to know a lot about it"

"That's why I hate it."

... which indicates that he may not have always been so advise to guns as he is now. I think there's quite an in-depth discussion about this around here somewhere...maybe the "Blood Brothers episode discussion? if any ones interested in trying to track it down...

This should have it's own topic if anyone wants to continue discussion the army background any further. I've gone way off topic. blush.gif

Yeah. The definition of "bad wig" is right there next to the entry about "Eclipse", the 3rd Twilight movie roller.gif

I remember Lucas Till saying in an interview that as an army brat, he felt bad he had such long hair in the Army-Flashback in the 6th episode of the Reboot. That's why they decided to "cover" it up.

I guess since TV shows film an episode within 8 days, RDA would have had to wear a wig for the rest of the Season; so I guess cutting the hair wasn't an option; especially if it was just for a flashback of a single episode.

I'll do some spookin' around. I think it might be vintage Banana Republic . . . back when BR had cool clothing, not the the trendy, hipster clothing they sell now. No offense to anyone who wears current BR clothing, but they no longer sell what used to set them apart from other clothing stores.

If anyone is interested in seeing where the lining of MacGyver's bomber jacket comes from AND the green flannel shirt he wears in the pilot episode, both are patterns of "The Black Watch" regiment in Edinburgh, Scotland and you can see how it's used in this video...
