So our friend Mac was keen on things you could tie up, cables, ropes, string, cotton etc. Often as not the episodes portray something being tied. Is anyone here clever enough to make list of all the knots we saw him use? For example, one I've seen him do a couple of times is to wrap a doubled length around his hand a couple of times and then appear to pass one/some of the loops on his palm under others when he is making climbing harnesses. I haven't got a clue what the knot is called, but if I could find out it would be fun to experiment with it and see what it does. Do we have any Boy Scouts' that could make a list of knot names please?

A while ago Bert & I were up for the challenge to see which tool Mac uses from his SAK in every episode to essentially calculate which one was used the most. I'm not sure if I have the strength to go throughout the whole series again for the knots. biggrin.gif

Anyone else? smile.gif

It sounds like the knot you asking about is the alpine butterfly. It's a fixed loop tied in the middle a rope that does not require access to either end. It's a climber knot, strong easy to tie and untie, that will hold in either direction.

It is really easy to learn. I would recommends it as one the essential knots that every one know.

Practical knots are a hobby and that's one of the keepers. If you have any questions, such as what knot works to solve a certain problem, just ask.

Def. many thanks and welcome, I was going to get back here, but I was trying to find a video of the knot that Mac does to see if it looked the same - if someone knows the best episode to check I'll take a look.

Are you meaning that knot he does in Survivors when he and Pete are climbing out of the cave and he slings the rope across for them to climb over?
