Just for the sake of conversation... If Mac were to be brought back, which of the following options would you prefer? (I'm trying to keep the choices at least vaguely realistic here.)

1. A new weekly tv series with a new actor playing a 30-something year old MacGyver

2. A new made-for-tv movie starring RDA as MacGyver (I think this is the only way we'd have any chance, even remotely, of getting RDA to reprise the role for a full adventure, not counting parodies and car commercials.)

3. The rumored big-screen "origins" movie, with a new actor for most of the movie, but with RDA book-ending the movie as Old Mac reminiscing about his early days.

4. An animated series, with RDA providing the voice.

5. A video game (I know they already released that puzzle game, but I'm talking about a more substantial game. Granted, I don't think any company would fund a hugely expensive MacGyver game, so expecting something with the quality of, say, an Assassin's Creed game might be too unrealistic. But maybe something more along the lines of a really good Kickstarter project.)

6. Let him rest, but re-release the original series on Blu-Ray, with improved picture quality, commentary tracks, interviews, and behind-the-scenes footage.

7. Other (feel free to suggest your own ideas.)

I would choose 7.

A MacGyver movie with a new star and a similar formula introduced in the pilot.

If the formula remains the same, it will work. RDA is too old to play MacGyver. Nobody will want an old hero to be introduce to a new generation.

Unfortunately a TV series will never survive. Not in this new age of TV. There is too much nitty gritty for an innocent hero to makeit in todays world.

Yeah, I pretty much agree. I do think getting RDA to bookend the movie might be a nice nod to the original series, but now that I think about it, the problem with doing that is that it would mean the movie would have to take place in the early 80s, and that might just end up looking silly. Maybe just having a brand new actor as a young-ish MacGyver in the present day is the better option.

As for a tv series-- you're right, if they follow the original template, MacGyver is too innocent to be a successful series in today's world. I think they could dirty it up a bit without totally sacrificing the spirit of the original show, but it would be a tough balancing act.

I wouldn't mind seeing an animated series with RDA voicing it but it would be a kids show - although, having just thought about it, Kids are probably the ones you want o get hooked in - if you hook the kids in, the adults will follow?

I think a new TV series could work, but it needs to be exactly the same formula as the original. If they change the formula it's a different show and they may as well just call it something else and be done with it. It has to have Mac working for Pete. Pete running the Foundation, Jack being a pain, etc etc.

1. A new weekly tv series with a new actor playing a 30-something year old MacGyver
No. It's either the movie or a new show.

2. A new made-for-tv movie starring RDA as MacGyver (I think this is the only way we'd have any chance, even remotely, of getting RDA to reprise the role for a full adventure, not counting parodies and car commercials.)
They should've gone for the six tv-movies instead halfway the 90's.

3. The rumored big-screen "origins" movie, with a new actor for most of the movie, but with RDA book-ending the movie as Old Mac reminiscing about his early days.
I'm for it but forget RDA book-ending it, just to have his a few seconds in a big movie. I know it's better than nothing, but I don't think it's a good idea.

4. An animated series, with RDA providing the voice.
Not a good idea. Than I go with option 1.

If done properly yes. A third person point and click adventure.

6. Let him rest, but re-release the original series on Blu-Ray, with improved picture quality, commentary tracks, interviews, and behind-the-scenes footage.
I'm all for that.

7. Other (feel free to suggest your own ideas.)
No other ideas, sorry.

The concept is rock solid. The year 2014 is ripe with material for MacGyver-esque plots. But .... you need great writing, appropriate casting, and the ability to compete in today's immense entertainment market. hmm.bmp hmm.bmp hmm.bmp

The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a man's determination.

You know, looking at all the options presented, the best scenario is making a kid's series. Comes a point in time when too many years pass, actors get older etc. As long as a few original producer (s) were involved, it might be a bit more realistic for RDA to do the voice work.

All things considered though, good luck on him reprising his role in a new spin-off. The tv movies have already been done
The animated series idea is not only the most realistic, but the most plausible one. Another MacGyver TV series would be a half hearted attempt to recap the glory days of the show. I'd rather. see the old series on Blu-ray. Give the kids something to emulate and leave the past in the past. Just because you have the ability to "remake", doesn't necessarily mean you should.

Okay. The whole world has drawn correlations between MacGyver and Indiana Jones. Granted, the fanbase sizes are way different, but the comparisons are very justifiably there.

That being said -- the masses would not accept Harrison Ford not playing Jones. So why would the masses accept anyone else playing MacGyver? I wouldn't.

Here's what I would accept: a film/TV special/TV series where an aged, retired MacGyver (RDA) visits his son, Sam (who has changed his last name to MacGyver, and whom, incidentally, Mac refers to as "Bud".) He gets called back by Phoenix for a very important training mission, and Sam insists upon tagging along. In the end, the problem-solving switches from father to son. I could dig a new series like that. (Especially if they brought back Murdoc in a few episodes!)

Doesn't work without RDA. See the unsold pilot "Young MacGyver" for reference.

. . . and, I want the old series on Blu-Ray.

I mean, seriously. This is MDB today. You're telling me an episode where this guy came after Mac and his son wouldn't be intense?? I think it'd be pretty damn sweet.

I chose #6.

I would also agree with Schmendrick's idea of a "Young MacGyver".

We need a hero in this messed up world in which we live and that hero should be macgyver he can fix anything we need someone thats against guns in today's world more then ever and a hero that doesn't swear and helps his fellow man. I have always like the idea of having macgyver take over the Phoenix foundation after the passing of Pete and having s.a.m take over his father's role and have it so murdoc has a son to go after S.a.m they never said anymore about Sam after the stringer and they could keep the series going with that so I would like the series to come back and who ever they get to play the parts is time as long as they keep it like the original story lines but revamp it to fit in these times im sure Sam would have the best cell phone and drive a new motercycle

I am a professional writer. If anyone here has any pull with Paramount or anyone else that could produce the pilot, I will write the pilot episode.

Oh thats awesome and you said the same thing about bringing s.a.m in to go follow in his fathers footsteps. A movie would be cool but only people that know about the original show would go see it everyone else would be like what's this but a new series first then maybe a movie after people got the feel of the show and what its about then do a movie about the original and we the big macgyver fans can say this is how we knew macgyver

Yeah, Murdock finally killing MacGyver, and Mac handing his SAK to Sam who manages to trick Murdock and get him jailed. And after that, Murdock's daughter shows up later on in the show to take revenge for her father's imprisonment. But let's face it: even Sam is too old today, to have the show take place in 2014.
Maybe the background story could be changed? After retiring and taking off with Sam, Mac adopted an orphan (Maybe an old buddie's child?) several years later. That kid could be in his late 20ies now and that's where we come back to the beginning of this post.

Regards, J.W.

No way. Sam doesn't have to be the exact same age. I dont think there'd be rioting in the streets if you shaved 15 years off him. NBD.

I would not be remotely interested unless RDA was either in the movie or tv series. Todays film industry would change MacGyver too much if it was recreated, and totally screw it up.

I would bring back as many of the original characters as possible, since many of them are alive. Jack Dalton especially, and Murdock and maybe Penny. If it was a movie I would pay over 100 dollars a ticket if I had too. If it was a tv series I would never miss an episode.

If it was a movie I would bring a big name, maybe Jason Statham as a really bad and dangerous guy, trained by a retired Murdock.

Also there is a really cool actor from the tv show under the dome that would make a great Sam

On the contrary, I think Mike Vogel would play an excellent MacGyver! Sheesh! Can't believe I never thought about it.

Some might remember him in the TV show Pan Am prior to starring in Under the Dome

(In a mood to revisit old threads today...)

feel free to suggest your own

Easy: books and comics.

That's how Star Wars kept itself alive for the longest time, and I loved that. You're not beholden to the age of the actor, and you're not stuck having to reboot or recast. You can continue the saga and you have the freedom to set the stories any time you want. You can go back to the glory days of the TV show itself, or you can go back and tell stories about his childhood or young adulthood, or you can tell stories about what happened after the series ended, or you can tell stories about what he's doing now. Or you can tell stories about some of the side characters (Pete, Jack, Murdoc, Harry, Sam, the Coltons...), again without any need to worry about whether the actor's dead or whether you can get them back or whether you can find a plausible enough substitute. The sky's the limit.
