I hated the reboot. I watched 4 or 5 and gave in. It grated on my nerves, it irritated me to the extreme. I didn't like the characters...the scripts, anything about it. And that was how it was for the first couple of years. Then I got Now TV (a UK thing) and I tried again... Now I've watched them all and suddenly I quite like it. Although I still think more solo Mac is my preference! |

My experience was just the opposite! I started watching the reboot and it was OK. I actually see a lot of parallels between it and Criminal Minds given the team/type of characters. Anyway, I had forgotten all about the original Mac (which I did watch as a teen/early 20-something) except for his duct tape and weird science stuff. Then my supervisor mentioned she started watching the originals that were rerunning on a classic TV station. In a fit of boredom I ran across it while channel surfing. After watching a few episodes I totally fell in love with the original Mac and cannot for the life of me even think about the reboot w/out going on a rant as it is SO NOT MACGYVER!! Ooops, just a little rant there. Sorry! |

I agree with MacsJeep in her original feeling of the new series. I tried, but it just isn't my cuppa. I'm glad it has found so many fans, though, and wish it all the best. |

After leaving it awhile I think my approach was different. I now see both shows as different things - although after seeing where they took the show it was easy to see where they were going to use RDA had he not refused. it would have kinda been nice, I think... I prefer the magnum reboot to Mac, though. That really works for me! |

First two episodes were way too fast in my opinion. When things started to get going Patricia suddenly leaves to show to be replaced by Matty, while Patricia had a lot of potential. The Australian girl too. It took me a while to learn to appreciate Matty. Bozer has been always in the way and his episode where he took on the training was really pushing it. They have their good and bad episodes but they get the Murdoc episodes at least right. Now, I'm waiting for the third season to air here. Yes, I like the reboot in it's own way but it so far from the original. It was so diverse: Mac solo, Mac with friends, the environment, the woods, the city, overseas. It's alright and sometimes you need to give things a second chance before you can like something. |

I really liked the first season of the new one. I'm now two episodes in to the second season, and I'm not loving it so far... They've made Jack into a grinning idiot and added Cage who (so far) seems like she's only there to criticise the rest of the gang. At least Bozer seems to be finding his feet a bit. Tell me it gets better, guys? |

... Cage leaves |

I mean I think it does, but everyone's opinions on the show are so scattershot that I couldn't tell you for sure. |

I think it does, yes. There are some really good episodes in S2. My favorites are 2x03 (Casino-Episode - should have been the S2 premiere; it has a lot of comedy and an interesting storyline with a single mission story. They should have brought that one first to introduce Cage) 2x10 2x11 (with Bruce McGill) 2x12 2x15 (with MDB) 2x21 (written by Lee Zlotoff; the most Original-MacGyver-like story so far) 2x22 |

Overall, I think the second season was stronger than the first, and the third season is stronger than the second. I'm not sure if it's because I'm getting used to the show and accepting it more for what it is (rather than constantly comparing it to the original), or if the show has actually gotten better. Probably a combination of both. I do agree with your criticisms of Jack and Cage. |

Now 6 episodes into Season 2 and still grinding my gears. I do like the new, improved Bozer, and Cage is growing on me a bit, but... OH, MY STARS AND GARTERS, WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO DALTON?! Bermuda triangle spirits? Really? Really?! Does he ever morph back into a reasonable human being, or are we stuck with the grinning idiot? |

I feel your pain... lol |
Posted by: Miasma 12 May 2019 - 03:51 PM
Pretty much just a grinning idiot, unfortunately. |

That is a crying shame... Whatever George Eads actual reasons for leaving were, if they did that to my character, I think I'd leave too! |

In fairness, Dalton a smart person he was not. LOL |

I've actually stopped watching. The show is just too boring for my tastes. I tried to like it and gave it a fair shot, but even the most exciting episodes (like the ones with MDB) are a let down for me. I wish I liked it better, I really do. I mostly just stopped commenting on it because I didn't want to end up bashing it on a weekly basis. There are plenty of people that seem to like it just fine, and I'd rather just let them enjoy it without my negativity. |

And, having just watched 'Duct tape + Jack', I forgive the producers. That one was really good |
Posted by: Rocket 15 May 2019 - 10:16 PM
No, no he wasn't! I suppose because the new Jack started out as less of a buffoon than the old Jack, I'm a bit disappointed to see him returning to that. Never mind, 'Duct Tape + Jack' was considerably less buffoony. If that's a word... |
Posted by: DashboardOnFire 17 May 2019 - 04:29 AM
Yes, I liked that one as well! |

I see rebooted Jack Dalton like RDAs Jack O'Neill in Stargate. He pretends to be dumb so the villains underestimate him... he was a tactical military leader so he has to have at least some smarts... they also both like to act smart-assy |

This, again, is why I wish the show had more memorable episode titles. I have no recollection what "Duct Tape + Jack" was about. I need to go the episode forum to find out. |
