MacGyver Online Forums > General Reboot Discussions > Renewed for Season 3

Posted by: Miasma 18 April 2018 - 12:21 PM
(I didn't see a thread for this, but if there is one, feel free to lock this one.)

Apparently the reboot is coming back for another season (not really a surprise, I guess.)

Dash mentioned it in the Promos. I don't think their's anything wrong with giving it it's own thread though. wink.gif When season 2 was announced, it had it's own thread.

Yes, I was in the process of doing one (since I was the one that had opened the Season 2 renewal thread as well), but then I went to see how I had done it and then got distracted laugh.gif.

First come, first opens a thread I guess tongue.gif

I just read this on Facebook while I was at work. *shhh... nobody knows... * unsure.gif

I'm not surprised though. Numbers have been good, so why not? It'll just give us more to talk about. MWAHAHAHAHA!!!

@Dash - I've done that. I've actually have taken so long to type up a post that I sometimes check to see if there's been a new post... just in case there's been a good point or to adjust my own post, or whatever.

Exactly. I can't say that I really love the show, but it's fun to come here and compare notes about it.

Well, as I said at the time of the S2 renewal: Even if it's not the show I wished for, the whole reboot project and what it became is still pretty exciting.

I never thought I would see #MacGyver trending on Twitter nowadays. It made people talk about Original MacGyver and what made the show so good on social media and discuss their childhood memories. Lots of parents watch rebooted Mac with their kids and then watch the Original, too. And even if they haven't seen an Original episode yet, so many kids created Halloween costumes last year and have a new idol to talk about - which might lead them to discover Original MacGver, too.

S2 was already better than S1 in many ways. They got a budget raise to step up the production game, new and better writers, better scripts and some exciting guest stars that - who knows - might come back for another episode?

I still think there's more potential in these characters they have created and I'm still not completely sold on the team dynamics sometimes (because the better the guest-stars, the less screen-time for MacGyver), but the show already got better and it can get better now with new chances in a new season.

Totally agree with you on this. I think the show started to get better towards the end of season 1, and most of season 2 was an improvement over season 1 (there were a few duds, but pretty much every show has those.) So it's heading in the right direction. Also, in addition to the show gradually getting better, I think that we, as an audience, are gradually getting more and more used to the fact that this isn't the original series, and we're starting to judge it on its own merits, rather than constantly saying, "Yeah, but in the original...."

So what are everyone's wishes for season 3?

For me, probably the biggest thing is more variety. I've been wanting this show to break out if its predictable formula for a while now. We've had two seasons in which almost every episode followed the exact same structure, and I think if this show is going to improve, the writers need to be given more freedom (I assume they're currently being told to adhere to the formula.)

Also, I want the villains to get more screen time. We never see them plotting or arguing among themselves or doing ANYTHING on their own. The only time the villains get any screen time on this show is when Mac & Friends encounter them. Other than that, the only reason we know anything about them is because of the obligatory briefing room scene at the start of every episode. It's a bad case of the writers "telling" rather than "showing."

And finally, I'd like to the show to have a bit more tension. It's supposed to be an action/adventure show, which means it should occasionally have me at the edge of my seat wondering how they're going to get out of a situation, and yet it never really does that. I want to worry about these characters. I want to feel like they're in danger. I think one of the only times I felt some genuine tension on this show was during the episode with the flooding ship (I forget the name of it), but even then, it was the guest star who was in danger, not any of the main characters.

I totally agree with you, Miasma. All of that would be cool.

I'd like the writers to get more of a grip on who the characters are actually supposed to be. They're too inconsistent a lot of the time. Don't even get me started on the inconsistent romance subplots...

It's unclear why Cage was even introduced. We'd have probably found out eventually, but she's gone, and it seems she's not coming back. The writers never really had a grip on her character. Why she was even there in the first place we may never know. I liked her, but if she's not coming back, her whole run on the show feels pointless.

I've said it before, but I'd love to meet David Dastmalchian in real life. He seems really nice, though I'm so socially awkward, I know I'd embarrass myself. I doubt anyone would mind, though, and it'd be worth it. laugh.gif

I think he's a really nice guy and patient with fans in general. It sure would be worth to meet him.

A German friend worked at a German convention last year where he made a guest-appearance. When I had checked up on the guest-list, I joked that she should try to meet rebooted Murdoc.

She didn't know him at all (and like me, had never heard about him before), but actually got to get an autograph for me without me knowing about it. She told me later that he was one of the nicest stars she ever got to meet at a convention (and she had worked at these conventions for years). He was great with the fans, despite severe lack of sleep (his daughter was born just days before he had to fly to Germany).

NBC just revealed their Schedule for 2018/19: https://season-zero.com/nbc-2018-2019-schedule/

If the Reboot stays in the same timeslot, it will compete against "Blindspot" again. It's the "toughest" competition on all the networks with a similar target audience. This season, it reached about 3.3 million live-viewers on average; so didn't undermine the Reboot too much. It ended the season with 2.8 million live-viewers and a demo-rating of 0.5, so I doubt it will be "dangerous" next season either.

Posted by: Jediferret 13 May 2018 - 09:44 AM
I'm sure Season 3 will do well. It's got a rather decent following, both old and new. I don't think the reboot is going anywhere for a while. lol

More for me to nitpick at... lol

I wouldn't mind meeting David Dastmalchian myself. He's seems like a cool guy. But it greatly depends on time/money... etc. etc. etc.

Bleh... tongue.gif

Story of my life. dry.gif

Once Upon a Time is over after this season, so that's not a competition anymore. I wonder what will take it's place. hmm.bmp

Supernatural has one more episode and then that season is over. =P Then I'll have nothing to watch until the Fall when all the new seasons start. Supernatural and MacGyver generally start around the same time. MacGyver usually starts at the end of September and Supernatural starts at the beginning of October.

And, from what I can gather, Game of Thrones and Stranger Things won't have new seasons until next year.

In other words, it's gonna be a boring summer TV show wise.

Fox is scheduling Last Man Standing and Cool Kids at 8. Don't know what impact that will have. I am hoping not much tho I'm sure Fox will use Thursday football to promote them. CBS needs better and more promo of Mac. And I hope MacGyver fans come out in huge numbers in support. Well, my worrying side needed something to fret over lol.

"Last Man Standing" was scheduled on Fridays 8pm in 2016/17 as well. It usually won the time slot in ratings with a bit less live-viewers than MacGyver (about 6 million). So definitely a tougher competition than the shows in this timeslot in 2017/18 ("Agents of Shields", "Once Upon A Time", "Inhumans" or "Blindspot").

It's a special situation. "Last Man Standing" had been cancelled last year and now got "resurrected". It might drawn in a big audience, but I guess it depends if the show stayed as good as it was before cancellation or not and/or if fans have moved on to other things and don't want to go back in case it gets cancelled again after just one season.

Of course, MacGyver could use some more promo anyway. I was a bit disappointed of the lack of promo for the Season Finale.

CBS schedule for 2018/19 is out: https://renewcanceltv.com/cbs-fall-2018-19-tv-schedule-young-sheldon-s-w-a-t-macgyver-more/

The Reboot stays on Friday 8pm; Lenkov's "Magnum" will air on Mondays 9pm.

Complete Friday Night Fall Schedule: https://www.spoilertv.com/2018/05/the-spoilertv-primetime-201819-full.html

The Reboot definitely has more competition this year. Dynasty won't be a problem (its ratings are marginal). Blindspot had about 3-4 million live-viewers, "Last Man Standing" about 6. The two shows on ABC are comedies with a new timeslot; they had about 4-5 million live-viewers last sesaon. "The Cool Kids" is a new show, so no clue how it will do.

I'm hoping the comedies cancel each other out. I know Last Man Standing was competitive so I hope the move to Fox and a year off works in CBS' favor. I didn't like how Tim Allen blamed his conservative views for being let go. If that were true how to explain Roseanne? I didn't care for him before I sure don't now lol. Here's hoping MacGyver can improve its numbers.

Ah, now I remember him ranting about that.

I'm not sure how the new schedule might affect the ratings since I'm no expert, but I made some speculations and guessing on my blog in my latest blog post (Update No. 56): https://dashboardonfire.wordpress.com/2018/05/18/macgyver-reboot-update-56/

I have to say, I wonder a bit about the writers implementing another new villain in Wlash for S3....
> The Organization stuff (surrounding Thornton) wasn't solved.
> The Murdoc situation wasn't solved; he's on the loose again
> The Ghost situation wasn't solved. We don't even know what the really looks like.

They have all these open storylines, although it's kind of a procedural "case of the week" show like the other crime shows (à la Bull or NCIS).

Posted by: Slater 20 May 2018 - 04:23 PM
Apparently the "Mac's father" storyline will feature prominently in this next season.

So far I've seen no proof for that, but I really hope so. Becaause after all that build-up in S2, I would be thoroughly disappointed if the situation was resolved just like that (e.g. with Oversight being gone and Mac being back at Phoenix right int he first episode).

Assuming they'll premiere the show in September again and it will be a direct 22 Episode Order as for S2, I'm guessing beggining/middle of July.

I'll open a S3 Spoiler thread as soon as I have information about the production.

Well, it IS Bruce Lee, so as Jack is such a big fan, maybe he was saying even MacGyver stands no chance against him? unsure.gif
