Been on any good adventures lately?

Maybe hiking of the beaten track or some other MacGyver-like activities...

Got any pictures of it? Post em here.

Finally, as promised.......the pictures of our MacGyvering our friend's truck open.

If you're not familiar, I went to Moab for an overnight trip. On our last hike, our friends locked their keys in their truck. We used a hot dog cooking stick, my SAK a screwdriver and my husband tofinally get the truck unlocked. The long version is under My MacGyverisms.

Here's the evidence.........

This was a great trip. It came at a time when I really needed to spend some time outdoors having fun with friends and family and the weather was so nice. Hard to believe it was only a month ago, especially with all the snow falling right now.

As soon as it gets warm again, I'm ready to go back.

Incredible photos! clapping.gif I've been longing to visit Moab. The desert does indeed look tempting right now, especially with all the snow around here. dry.gif

Posted by: MacGyverGrrl 8 December 2007 - 12:42 AM
Thanks. Better save that visit for a few months. Right now, the desert is cold and wet. Today Moab got .70 inches of rain.

Its hard to take a bad photo in Moab. Come on out and I'll play tour guide. biggrin.gif

Great pictures!

One of my co-worker's' sister works for the National parks (not sure if that's exactly what she said) system in Moab. She's always talking about going out there to see her. Now I finally get to see what the place looks like.

She's always saying that the best coffee comes from the Mormons there. I guess she goes out there just to get the coffee, lol!

There are some pretty good coffee shops in Utah, suprising considering most Mormons don't drink coffee.

The place in Moab is called the Loco Lizard, I think. It changed management recently and I can't remember if they also changed the name.

Cool, a connection in Moab. The photos are all from Arches National Park. There is also Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse State Park in the same general area.

If you go, you will have a great time.

Thanks! I have always wanted to see Arches National Monument. I think it's beautiful. Now I just have to find the money and the time laugh.gif

I went to graduate school in Utah -- four years of it -- and not all of my memories are particularly pleasant. But I remember Moab with great fondness; it's a really gorgeous area!

It didn't have very good coffee back then, so I'm glad they've got that fixed!

Posted by: trtlsoup 10 December 2007 - 05:59 PM
Wow! Nice pics, Grrl... It's been SO long since I'd been in that (general) area.

Your son? A cutie! biggrin.gif

Posted by: MacGyverGrrl 10 December 2007 - 08:48 PM
Thanks trtl. We think he's pretty cute ourselves.

Beth, which school? What were you studying?

Yep, coffee is becoming a lucrative business in Utah. My husband knows where most of the coffee shops in Salt Lake area. biggrin.gif

I was in a MFA programme at the University of Utah, studying technical theatre -- specifically, costuming. I worked the Utah Shakespearean Festival for two summers during this time; which would have been more fun if I'd had anything better than a bicycle to get out into hiking country on our rare days off!

This was between 1983 and 1987 (yup, MacGyver started airing while I was there), and it was nearly impossible to find either decent coffee or decent beer anywhere. blink.gif

Your son is adorable. biggrin.gif (My stepson just turned 21 . . . I am in shock.)

I was working my government job and going to school when you were in Utah. If you never got to get out to the back country, its a standing invite, you come out, we'll play tour guide. Jade knows that area like the back of his hand. We can show you some spectacular country. Just drop us a line.

That's a beautiful place, Rocky. And it looks F U N !!! The land (and water) reminds of a place that I would go hiking in upstate New York. Just bee-autiful!

I love it when kids are that age... all full of imagination and adventure. Enjoy them while it last. Kids grow up WAY too fast... happy.gif

Yeah the weather soothseer called it a break away storm. The low pressure split off from the jet stream and parked over the Salt Lake and it just kept on spinning out the snowflakes. dry.gif

Supposed to be warmer and clearer the rest of the weekend. biggrin.gif

There's been a funny shiny thing up in the sky off and on the last few days . . . I think I remember seeing something like it before, months ago . . . unsure.gif and when it's visible, I've noticed that there are dark blobby things underneath solid objects outside. blink.gif Anyone ever seen this phenomenon before?

Is that eastern Washington? I drove from Montana to Oregon a couple of years ago (when I briefly lived in MT to attend graduate school), and I couldn't believe how different eastern Washington is from the coastal areas. While places like Eugene, Portland, and Seattle have lush, wet climates, the eastern half of these states are desert. It's like two different states completely!

Posted by: SAG 25 May 2008 - 06:55 AM
Yeah it's Eastern WA. I love that about this state....like you mention it's like living in two states....everything west of the Cascades is green forest, while it's all but a desert east of the Cascades. Makes for a lot of different, cool places to go, also some very remote places which I like a lot.

My boys and I recently found a new stream to go hiking up in a near-by location (10 minutes drive from my house) It has lots of boulders and water holes to climb and swim in as we make out way up the stream so has lots of fun adventure and a nice way to keep cooled off at the same time.

Here's a few of the photos I took while on our last hike.

Ice sailing rocks! I like land sailing too. I've been on the lookout for years for a remote controlled land yacht to play with but you can't get them in this part of the world.

Below is a picture of a Great Horned Owl, whose wing was busted, that I helped rescue today.

user posted image

As I've stated in other threads, I work for a security company that has a contract with the Army Corps of Engineers. The site I'm assigned to is located way out east of Denver, CO, where all kinds of wildlife reside. Today when I relieved my boss, he showed me pictures of an owl that had an injured wing. After my boss left I went in search of the owl and sure enough, found him, or should I say he found me and immediately spread his wings, as best he could, and started clicking at me. I was able to take a great picture of him with my camera, looking right at me. I then went back to the office to retrieve my phone and returned to where I saw the owl, in order to take more pictures.

I then returned to the office and called the Colorado Parks and Wildlife office to report what I found, who in turn dispatched two volunteers, Ken and Teresa, a husband and wife who have been rescuing wildlife for over ten years. The pictures were taken in case the CPW wanted to see what it was they would be dealing with.

Prior to the two volunteers arriving, the CPW representative told me to place a blanket or a box over the owl to calm it down and make sure it wouldn't try to fly away, which it wouldn't have been able to given it's damaged wing. When she first told me this, I asked, "You guys can't do that?" At which point she explained that if the owl was somehow able to get away, the volunteers would have driven out here for nothing.

I then got a pair of leather gloves and a blanket out of my car and a large box out of the recycle bin and made my way back to the owl, who upon seeing me approach with the box, spread it's wings, looked me right in the eye and tried to get away. As I continued moving toward him he turned around at which point I placed the box over him and within seconds he stopped fighting, just like the CPW rep. said he would. I placed the blanket over the box to further restrict any light that could get in through the edges of the box.

It was at this point I realized how heavy I was breathing. I had never done anything like this before. Usually my thought is, nature is nature, let it takes its course, but this owl was obviously in trouble and needed help.

Once Ken and Teresa arrived they opened the box, carefully placing a blanket over the owl before placing him in a transport cage. As it ends up, it was a young male, he still had the downy feathers on top of his head. I was able to pet it's head . . . soooooo soft.

Ken and Teresa took the owl to Birds of Prey Foundation, a non-profit corporation. I'll follow up with them tomorrow and post updates. I didn't think to take my camera with me to take pictures while Ken and Teresa were taking care of the owl. I wasn't sure how much if any help I could be, so I didn't want to bother with my camera.

Posted by: MacFan092985 4 August 2013 - 08:54 AM
After speaking with a Birds of Prey representative, the owl is only about three months old and has a fractured humerous. If things go as planned, he will be treated for 3 to 4 weeks and then sent to their rehab facility to make sure he's strong enough to fly and then released back into the wild. They said they try to release the birds back into the area they were removed from and that since owls are nocturnal animals he will be released at night, so there won't really be anything to see.

Posted by: MacCat 4 August 2013 - 09:14 AM
MacFan, that is an amazing thing you did rescuing the owl.
