A computer-generated voice has become perhaps the most divisive subject on the internet since the gold/blue dress of 2015. It’s one word, but the source of furious disagreement is which one. Is it Laurel – or Yanny?

I hear Laurel, maybe the hidden message is Yanny.

I hear Yanny, but it is Laurel.

Gav, from Miracle of Sound, slowed down the clip and it's definitely Laurel. The Yanny comes from the distortion of the sped up clip. Some people just hear better than others, I guess. XD I have hearing problems, so I don't always hear things correctly.

It's weird. Yesterday i heard Laurel. Today i am hearing Yanny.

People who have hearing attuned to higher frequency - often younger people and ethnic groups with naturally higher pitch voices will hear one while everyone else will hear the lower pitched word.

Some people at work today were saying they heard one word, but when it was played on the TV news last night (yes apparent this is news worthy!) they heard the other.... the explanation would be that their TV sound is playing at a lower (or maybe higher) pitch so they are picking up the other word easier.

I didn't put much thought into the explanation, regardless... it's a silly thing to be arguing over. After reading a lot of the arguments, I kinda moved on. I don't need that kind of negativity in my life. lol

It begs the question, can't we all just get along? XD
