Universal Pictures has unveiled the first official photos from its upcoming “MacGruber” movie, based on the popular SNL “MacGyver” parodies.

With the film scheduled for release on April 23 2010, http://www.universalpictures.com/ now has the movie listed in the Feature Releases panel on their website with the following synopsis.

QUOTE
Only one American hero has earned the rank of Green Beret, Navy SEAL and Army Ranger. Just one operative has been awarded 16 purple hearts, 3 Congressional Medals of Honor and 7 presidential medals of bravery. And only one guy is man enough to still sport a mullet. In 2010, Will Forte brings Saturday Night Live’s clueless soldier of fortune to the big screen in the action comedy MacGruber.

In the 10 years since his fiancée was killed, special op MacGruber has sworn off a life of fighting crime with his bare hands. But when he learns that his country needs him to find a nuclear warhead that’s been stolen by his sworn enemy, Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer), MacGruber figures he’s the only one tough enough for the job.

Assembling an elite team of experts–Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe) and Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig)–MacGruber will navigate an army of assassins to hunt down Cunth and bring him to justice. His methods may be unorthodox. His crime scenes may get messy. But if you want the world saved right, you call in MacGruber.

First reaction: this is wrong in so many ways – I have lost count of how many.
Second: to rip off such a beautiful concept, and turn it into a parody that lasts longer than 40 seconds, should be punished by death.
Third: I will never ever voluntarily go see this.
Fourth: boo to the uncreative people that can't come up with ideas of their own.
Fifth: MacGyver rules!

laugh.gif Yeah I'm inclined to agree, but unfortunately this might actually be as close as we get to a MacGyver movie, or any other sort of revival. sad.gif

I'm to optimistic to . I tend to think that Hollywood would have some really good writes and look at this film and get and idea Hey wait a minute here if they are going to make fun of MacGyver than we will make one that is more realistic and make into a action movie. I also think that if the MacGyver movie is in the works ,then that is what they are waiting on a really good script because MacGyver is such a big icon. We have seen him on the Simpson's and here about him all the time in culture references everywhere. Or is it just me who thinks is.

Disgraceful!

Plenty of good writers up there and good directors too. But of course men with experience is what I'm looking for to make the movie. Though I said in the other topics, my dream director would be JJ Abrahams. He made two movies from old tv-shows (Mission Impossible and Star Trek) that were very succesful. He's the to-go-to-guy, if you ask me.

Actually, people, I fear this MacGruber horror (do they really think naming a character Von Cunth is funny?) will take us farther away from a MacGyver movie than ever before.

It's easier to spell for them than Von Leer. dry.gif

Yes well; I could make some assumptions about why they were drawn to use that name. dry.gif

Oh yeah?
Care to share?

A new exercise in vulgarity. Great. mellow.gif

A minute-long parody on SNL is funny... the Sooperbawl Pepsi commercials were hysterical...

... but a feature film of this stuff? That's a potential of nearly two hours of intellectual torture.

I'll pass, thanks anyway... yucky.gif

Because it sounds like a slang term for a part of the female anatomy, which, you know, makes it really funny (if you're 5 years old.)

When i first saw the photo's all I thought was MacGruber looks like a wannabe double O 7, the girl looks like shes still stuck in the 1970's, and the army type guy looks back in the 1980's.

No actually my original comment was a very (maybe too) subtle reference to what I think of these idiots. I'm not going to say any more than that. wink.gif

I guess the one good thing we can take from this is that RDA hasn't gotten involved in it. Lets just hope he's not making a surprise appearance.

I saw SNL last Saturday and they did another three sketches- all depicting MacGruber as a racist- so while initially trying to parody MacGyver and hyperbolize the elements of the show, they have now turned it into "irony," doing things MacGyver never would. It's funny to have the repeated scenario of Mac locked in a room while the clock ticks down, it's not funny to make him a vulgar, racist, heavy-handed moron.

But you know what? That's where American culture has gone. Sure there's always been some edginess, but shows like SNL have pushed the envelop so far it's a game of shock now. Every movie, show, stand up host, it's all so much off color adult humor there's almost no escaping it now. Granted, I am probably a somewhat racy person myself at times, but even I feel things are going south, and I'm 22, not 40, and saying this.

As for the impact on the MacGyver movie, yeah, I also suspect there is no taking MacGyver serious now, sadly MacGyver has been so scarce on the airwaves over the last half a decade or more that kids who missed MacGyver will say "Oh, this is like that funny MacGruber movie, only it's not funny." dry.gif I mean, I think there's enough of an audience people would show in droves if the trailer got enough marketing and it was a DANG good trailer, but we have all discussed before the lack of quality in 80's shows turned movies like Miami Vice. Hopefully this will be one of those miracles and there will still be a Mac movie, and it will be VERY well written and promoted.

This might be about to turn around with the new A-Team movie.

Wow! Looks like they might finally do it right- if something that looks so promising somehow goes wrong- maybe we need to keep Hollywood away from Mac until they grow up a little more tongue.gif

Well, yeah the A-TEAM movie that is going to be released in the next months reflects in my own 2 important things

1- mac is going to be killed by the new macgruber movie.
2- The success of the A-TEAM movie could turn directors and witters, realize that a mac movie would be a good business, and then we will get our full packages promos, dvds and a new story.

But nobody knows yet.

They just released the unrated trailer...

This just isn't the movie for me.

Now, without a doubt when I tell people I like MacGyver they will laugh at me because Mac is associated with this movie...
