They will homogenize those Marvel comic characters to the point that they are no longer recognizable.

Maybe they should have bought MGM instead, so we can get the Stargate movies budgeted.

Changing of ownership is pretty common in the Movie/Television industry. It was only a few years ago we saw Paramount Studios purchased by NBC; And a few years before that Warner Brothers purchased by AOL. Nothing much changes when these purchases occur, unless the purchasing company dissolves the brand name and I can't see Disney doing that to Marvel.

I would expect Marvel to continue to operate as a seperate company under Disney's umbrella in the same way as Paramount operates under NBC's umbrella.

The movie side of it will get interesting though. Will Disney continue to allow it's rivals to use what is now their characters? Or will they hog them all for themselves?

I'm not an ubber-Disney-hardcore-fan (but I enjoyed most of their animated movies!! Beauty and the Beast is still my favorite!!!!!), but I don't find that Marvel would suffer just 'cause Disney bought it.

But then again, is not like I care much for Marvel. Their obvious physiculturist display of the characters bore me to death and make me sick. Not to mention that most of their so called "heroes" are hated most of the times. Really suxs to be a hero in the Marvel world >_< I know life is not roses and sunshines for the heroes (got to be horrible to try to be normal when not), but still, Spider man seems to never get a break! And the X-men?!! I feel sorry for all of them. I'm surprised they haven't done massive suicide yet!!! roller.gif

I apologize in advance if I offended any Marvel fan. That is never the intention.

Hey, no offence to Spidey or Wolverine, huh?

What worries me is that Disney might turn the marvel comics into real childrens movies.

I think if that happens it really is the end of marvel comics.

But as Rock said, it's not that they buy it, big changes are gonna happen. I don't think Sam Raimi or Bryan Singer or Brett Ratner or Hugh Jackman are going to let any thing bad happen to what they made big.

What exactly do you think they can do about it? They don't' have any say over Disney's actions.

Not that I think they would have too. I would think Disney would want those big blockbuster movies to continue so they can rep the rewards for themselves.

I'm a huge comics fan, primarily of the Marvel genre.

I was literally in my comic store Monday after I found out about this discussing it with my comic guy as I picked up my monthlies.

We both agree, as to most, that this will affect absolutely nothing. DC Comics has been owned by Warner Bros for years, and Disney makes a LOT more than family entertainment. They slap a new label on it, sure (ie, Miramax making Pulp Fiction, etc...yeah, that's Disney, folks), but they make it anyway.

Disney has owned Pixar for years and look what happened there. Nothing. Everyone was worried that Pixar would become crap. Didn't happen.

Disney is a huge multimedia corporation (one that, ironically, like Marvel, was nearly bankrupt in the eighties) that manages tons of properties. You don't get to be a huge multimedia corporation without being smart, and being smart implies buying the rights to things that will make you money and then letting them do just that.

The best view on this that I can find is here:

http://robio.livejournal.com/369767.html

It makes all my points for me without me having to type them again.

Um....what do Singer, Jackman, or those R guys have to do with making Wolverine and such big?

Sorry. I had to. As a comics fan, I simply must point out that ink and paper made those guys big.

And I suspect there will be all sorts of strings attached to this in terms of where the characters can go, etc. But honestly, it wont' matter. At least not in the foreseeable future. This is just like KraftFoods owning nearly every other food brand in the world.

Just labels and who get their pockets lined in the long run.

Okay, if nothing changes there's no problem.

They are the makers of the films. Without them it would still be paper and ink, (of course with all due respect to the creators of the characters). Without actors like Hugh Jackman, I don't think Wolverine would've been that popular. OK, the paper and ink made them big, the makers/actors of the film made them bigger.

There ya go.

That's the way to say it. Wolverine was HUGE before any film ever got made, and he will be HUGE long after folks forget about the films. (Which most are already trying to do as quickly as possible in the comics world, it seems.) Sure, some non-comics folks get brought into the fold and there is more major media exposure (and that's a good thing) but it's not what made those characters great or even noteworthy.

I'm not a big Marvel Fan (Go DC Comics!) but I do like some of their stuff (Spiderman, the X-Men).
I was kinda shocked when I read the newspaper article in my newspaper.

I live in Florida, so one of my first thoughts was about the Universal Studios theme park's Marvel Heroes Island. The article said that the park would remain the same as long as it wanted to and it abided to the contract.

I also read that the production companies that had rights to certain of the characters for movies and such would be allowed to keep their contracts 'till the contracts expired.
