MacGyver is back on the Codex case.

Ten months (and a pandemic) have passed since season 4 abruptly ended, which culminated in Mac (Lucas Till) and the team seemingly taking down the eco-terrorist organization following the death of Mac's aunt and Codex leader, Gwendolyn Hayes (Jeri Ryan). But, as we all know, the battle to bring down Codex is far from over.

In Friday's season 5 premiere, Mac and his cohorts infiltrate a luxurious hotel doubling as an international hideout for criminals to locate a possible informant with crucial information on Codex -- only there's a bit of a problem: Their target has a new secret identity.

ET exclusively premieres a first look at the dramatic opening scene, as Mac and Russ (Henry Ian Cusick) go to great lengths to gather intel at the steaming hot hotel spa. After IDing their mark, Vincent (Jessie T. Usher), Mac proceeds to drop some pills into a glass of water to incapacitate him. Later, after a heated exchange between Russ and Vincent, the mark finds himself unconscious after taking a single sip of tainted water.

"Shouldn't have worked that fast," Mac says, surprised at the accelerated turn of events.

"Yes, well, I may have given him something as a precaution," Russ reveals.

"Russ, I had it," Mac replies, annoyed.

"Better safe than sorry," Russ responds, as the two try to get Vincent's body off the ground.

Things go from bad to worse when security approaches the pool area, forcing Mac and Russ to scramble to cover their tracks. Of course, it being MacGyver and all, Mac figures out an easy way to create a distraction with only a hot bed of coals and a glass water bottle filled with water. Pressure and heat? Well, that can only mean one thing -- and it's not going to be pretty.

MacGyver premieres Friday, Dec. 4 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. For more on the series, watch the video below.

Lucas Till Calls ‘MacGyver’ Season Five ‘The Best Season I’ve Ever Had’

Mac is back! New episodes of MacGyver begin tonight at 8:00PM ET/PT, only on CBS and streaming on CBS All Access. Everyone’s favorite handman Angus MacGyver returns with a whole new slate of challenges to overcome and gadgets to create. CBS‘ Matt Weiss spoke to Lucas Till, who plays MacGyver, about returning to work, what fans have to look forward to and telescopic rocket launchers.

MW: Lucas, nice to see you again man. I’m sure with the way that things have gone this year you weren’t even sure if there would be a new season at one point or another. How does it feel to be back?

LT: You’re 100% correct. I didn’t know what was going to happen. When we came back, I was looking at the COVID protocol and I was like what is this, how are we going to get anything done? Then when I got here you get used to a couple of different protocols in the morning or a different routine and everything is the exact same.

Everybody’s wearing mask, you stay further away from certain people. You can talk to people, just going further away. It was touch and go for a while. Come to find out that this is the best season I’ve ever had. It’s crazy how that worked out.

MW: That’s awesome. On this show in particular so there’s so much going on and stunts to perform. You said it’s going really well, but what have been some of the challenges that you’ve seen?

LT: Some of the challenges, honestly there’s false positives that wipes out an entire group for the day even though it’s false. I think that’s frustrating for everyone up top too and frustrating for us, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. It can happen and it may happen again, but that’s OK we’ll deal with it because it’s better to be working and making a show for everybody from all the way to the bottom to the top. It’s been really nice to be able to do this, like I said.

MW: Now that we are back there’s a lot going on as always with MacGyver. Your caught in between multiple women, you got lots of things to figure out here. What’s going to happen this season?

LT: I never understood people being polygamous, that’s not what Mac’s doing [laughs] but I’m just saying having one significant other is hard enough, how do you have more than one? How do you get caught between and then he’s also saving the world on top of it. Really, it’s more about them making these decisions than Mac. He’s not really choosing, they are. They got the choice.

It’s awesome though because I love going to work every day with the people that I work with. It’s not always the case and we got a great group of people with cast and crew. Production and pre-production side, the writers’ side all those people are just turning out these great scripts. It’s a pleasure.

MW: A big part of MacGyver are the inventions, or the things that he’ll put together. How do this season’s creations and tricks match up to some previous seasons that you guys have put together?

LT: There’s some good stuff, today I used an old rotary phone to do a Morse Code messenger. The other day, I used a telescope as a rocket launcher or a fire extinguisher rocket. That was pretty cool. I honestly always forget when people ask me about the coolest stuff.

MW: When you’re building rocket launcher telescopes I guess it all kind of blends together at some point.

LT: [Laughs] Correct.

MW: Last question before I let you go. As you mentioned a few times it’s amazing just be able to put out new episodes. Fans of MacGyver have been wanting new episodes for a while, so how good does that feel to give your fans new episodes to tune in and turn everything else off for a little bit?

LT: Yeah, it’s nuts. I mean I realize everybody’s going through similar things. I realized talking to my dad or my mom, they’re both fans of the show, and it’s like oh wow this does mean a lot to you, it means a lot to me to do it. It means a lot to them to be able to watch on their Friday nights and escape what’s going on right now. I think it’s going be cool to deliver that to fans.

MW: Absolutely. Lucas, thank you so much, always a pleasure talking to you and all the best.

LT: Alright, thanks man!

Lucas Till Teases Upcoming 'Awkward Tension' This Season on MacGyver

MacGyver Season 5 will have a fresh feel to it as the CBS series has a new showrunner, Monica Macer. And according to series star Lucas Till, she’s managed to go back through the previous seasons and find story points that were left without a resolution and turn them into “astounding” capers, making it look as if that was always the plan.

Along with that, Macer has added a film-homage element to at least two episodes. The first being the premiere episode, which takes a page from the John Wick movies when Mac and the team infiltrate the Grand Hotel, an international hideout for criminals that very much resembles Wick‘s Continental Hotel, to find a woman with vital information on Codex.

“It was pretty awesome,” Till tells Parade.com in this exclusive interview. “One thing that we are first and foremost is an action show, in my opinion, and to be able to pay homage to the most action-y of action movies of our recent time, it was amazing. Levy Tran [Desi Nguyen] was definitely having a blast because she’s an action junkie. Everyone was loving that one.”

Even though the first episode back is still dealing with Codex, it is definitely going to feature standalone stories, which is good to hear because it felt as if Codex was dealt its death blow in the Season 4 finale.

“Codex is exactly what you would think they would be,” Till says. “Something that’s been broken down and beaten down and no longer organized, while there are still remnants of the old order around in the world. You’ll still hear whispers, but for the most part, they’ve been defeated. It doesn’t mean there aren’t characters at play that belong to those factions, but for the most part there will be a lot of standalone storylines that deal with individual characters and their backstories or their current stories.”

The second episode with a film homage, which will air later in the season, will be a tribute to James Stewart’s Rear Window. Till is calling it the “COVID” episode, because it will take place predominantly in the house.

“It sounds dreary but it’s not, it’s funny,” Till reassures. “It’s one of my favorite episodes. Everything is so relatable because literally everyone in the entire world can relate to this episode all at the same time. One of the writers said it was super cathartic to write, because of all the frustrations we were going through, to put it on paper.”

In addition, this season of MacGyver is going to be what Till calls a “Frankenstein season but in the best possible way.” What he means by that is some of the episodes were shot lost year and will be interspersed with brand-new episodes. So, the show will not be taking on world events as much as other shows, but it will still address issues.

“We talk about some really, really cool stuff this year that’s going on in the world without beating anyone over the head with it. And we talk about it in a really fun, entertaining, or cool way. Or a way that’s very smart, or a way that you’re not even going to notice,” he says.


This is your fifth season. You must feel more at home in the character now. How do you feel he has grown over the years?
I was just on the phone this morning with one of our producers and he was saying I’ve grown into it. I would agree, though, because it took me a long time to get used to the pace of television. I feel like I’ve finally not only gotten used to it, but I really love the pace. I don’t even know what I’ll do when I work on a movie now, because it’ll be too slow for me.

That being said, I feel like I can move within that space and pay attention to things more. The scripts are just getting better and better, so that makes it a lot easier. And the character stuff that Monica and the whole writing team are doing, it’s easier to explore the character, or grow as a character, because I can pay attention to those things and they’re giving me all the tools that I need to do that.

But Mac, his dad’s dead, the aunt he just found out existed is dead, so the only family that he had is all gone, so he realizes the family he needs is right there with him. He’s essentially an orphan now. Not a lot of people have that to deal with at, I guess, Mac is 30 now. In five more years, he would be the age that Richard Dean Anderson was when he was MacGyver, so maybe we’ll just have to go five more years so we can tie those two together, the storylines.

Mac broke up with Desi, but I always felt that wasn’t quite resolved. But then last season, Riley [Tristin Mays] came to his rescue and there was a spark there. Is this going to get awkward? Especially if Riley and Desi become friends.
Well, it’s a writer’s dream as far as dramatic tension, isn’t it? And maybe an audience’s. But you seem to use all the right words right there. It’s definitely going to get awkward because of how tangled the web is if they become friends, but then there’s feelings on both sides. If you like that dynamic, you’re going to love what the writers are doing this year. I was blown away. My jaw dropped when they told me what they were going to be doing this year as far as just the character stuff.

When Richard Dean Anderson played MacGyver, it was a one-man show, but this is an ensemble. Do you prefer it this way? It certainly allots for some time off for you!
Not only the day off, but I just want to take the time to express my gratitude for my cast. Because people don’t get as lucky as I do with the people that I work with on a daily basis. We all really do get along and it’s nice. We have fun at work, which can be an unusual thing depending on what show you’re on. And it’s a tough job, you’re here 60 hours a week minimum, pretty much. You better be having fun or you’re going to leave. I’m just lucky to be surrounded by the ensemble…I much prefer the ensemble.

I would think it’s really nice to have a cadre of actors, because “acting is reacting,” right? When you get to know people, it must make the job that much easier.
I was just complementing Justin Hires [Wilt Bozer] the other day. He and Henry Ian Cusick [Russ Taylor], there was something that was just magic. It was something that Woody Allen would have appreciated; it was just back and forth. But they can do that because Justin’s just a genius sometimes. All of us, we know each other now. And because we’re all fans of each other, we end up suggesting stuff to do now. We’ve hit a stride.

You describe it as an action show. Which is actually harder: learning the scientific dialogue, or the physical stuff?
I’ll say this, it’s neither one of those things. Both of those are my favorite things to do in their own respect. If you really want me to split the hair between those two, I will, but those things are my favorite and I’ll tell you why. Science, I love it, so it’s easy because I’ll pay attention to it, and I’ll understand it, and I’ll have an excuse to look something new up and learn it.

And then action is great because I don’t have to learn anything. I have to memorize five moves at a time, choreography, it’s like dancing more than anything else. And also, my stunt doubles do a lot of the work for me and make me look good.

My least favorite part is learning arbitrary exposition which is necessary for the story. But when I’m talking about, “We’ve got to rescue John Doe in Uzbekistan, in this small town with a 12:45 a.m. exfiltration.” That stuff is the worst, because it doesn’t make sense unless you can visualize it. That’s the most difficult part of my job–the exposition. But the writers have been really good at balancing that out for all of us.

I can teach you how to do it" Sharon Osbourne says, "So Lucas, MacGyver definitely wants to get behind the wheel of that Ferrari?" Till admits, "I do." Hernandez adds, "I don't blame him...anybody looks sexy in that car, even me."
