The Hollywood Report is today reporting that CBS have given the MacGyver Reboot the green light for a pilot to be produced.

No new information has been provided yet, with news reports instead confirming the information we got back in Oct of last year. Henry Winkler will Exec produce along with Atomic Monster, James Wan's production company, head of production Michael Clear. Wan will exec produce and direct the pilot with speculation that he will use this project to segue into Television.

Wan has had his eye on the MacGyver franchise for some time and was pipped to direct the now defunct New Line Cinema feature movie and drew the ire of fans when he revealed his vision for MacGyver's future.

The project originally had NCIS: LA executive producer R. Scott Gemmill attached as a writer, but have now has a new script written by Paul Downs Colaizzo and will feature a 10 years younger, twentysomething, MacGyver as he gets recruited into a clandestine organisation from the original series - flying in the face of the already established lore of the original series.

This will be the second attempt at re-capturing the MacGyver viewership. Warner Brothers tried to develop a Young MacGyver TV series which would follow MacGyver's nephew as he joined his uncles former employer, the Phoenix Foundation to put his inherited knack for improvisation to good use. The series went to pilot, but was never picked up and has draw considerable criticism over the years for ignoring the fact that the original MacGyver had no living relatives and therefore could not have had a nephew.

I saw this on the deadline website. Well at least a pilot is going to get made, let's hope that it is good and respects the original.

In terms of casting I don't have the faintest idea on who they would cast as Mac. blink.gif

oh I know it's a long shot but hey we all have our "prefect" casting choices... whoever they cast I just hope three things

1. the actor has a bit of ruggedness to him (RDA was never a pretty by he was handsome but he was well rugged my number 1 fear is whoever they cast to play MacGyver will seem to pretty boyish)

2. the Series takes the character and world of MacGyver seriously (which it seems like they are going in this direction so I am happy)

3. they keep the theme.

but quick question for everyone with the pilot greenlight shouldn't we be getting casting info soon enough within the next couple of weeks?

we could be discussing the new MacGyver in literally a few weeks!

If its like most remakes, I'll hate it. I'm not one bit excited, If I'm honest.

that seems to be the guiding view of nearly everyone which is a shame am I the only one who sees the potential of this becoming a sort of Casino Royale for the franchise...

Again I loved the Comic book (the only non RDA portrayal we really have had even though it's in comic book form) and Thought had they worked on the script a bit MacGyver 2003 (I hate calling it young MacGyver because the title sequence really was just a blue MacGyver no young in the title at all) could of been at least somewhat interesting and Paladacki managed to pay homage to RDA without going over board (in fact his casting and acting was the only good thing about the show) Does it have the potential to suck sure and if it does I will gladly say so. I love Batman but after three epsiodes I realized Gotham was a waste of time. However Bond Bourne and Mission Impossible have all had their reboots let Mac have his.

I know this post will fall on deaf ears but can we all with hold judgment till we at least see the first promo shots or trailer? Heck if MacGyver was a real person and was on this forum even HE would say "let not rush to judgment (one of the best and most compelling later season episode)"

All we know is it's happening it could be amazing it could suck but we don't know that nor will we till we all watch it.

Barbara Broccoli & EON Productions were responsible for the creation of Casino Royale. And since she was the daughter of big time producer Albert who did all the Bonds before, people had faith she would do the franchise justice. Still, a lot of people dislike the Craig Bond era.

As for MacGyver, James Wan is NOT the first choice when it comes to rebooting the character. He seems to know very little about the character too which has many people concerned. His background does not quite extend the arm of faith into these borders so naturally people are worried. Furthermore, there is no confirmation that anyone who really knew Mac is on board, except for Winckler but we doubt very much he will be very involved.

So yes, we are concerned.

It would be cool if they used the original theme as the new X-Files did also.

do you guys think they'll film the pilot in Canada or the US ?

I'm with Denizen on this. Don't get your hopes up. If you want a MacGyver production that can reach up to the levels of Casino Royale than you better hope Lee David Zlotoff does everything; the writing, directing and the producing. It's his creation. You know after everything I read on Stephen Downing on the MacGyver blogspot site I start wondering why Zlotoff and Downing don't get together and talk. Downing practically led the whole thing.

James Wan still has no mention of being attached to the project at all on his filmography. I'm not sure we really have to expect something from him. He's finishing The Conjuring 2 now and his following directing project will be Aquaman for 2018. Besides that he has three other projects he will be producing but two of them are unknown if they will proceed. Maybe it means anything can happen.

I'm more favor of reboots than remakes. But it when it comes to this a lot of disappointments happen. There are always going to be fans disliking it, saying it sucked and that it is not the same. I can like some stuff maybe it's because I'm unfamiliar with the original. I liked JJ Abrams Star Trek and Star Wars for that matter while I'm not a Trekkie or Star Wars fan at all. In him I can trust that it'll be at least good enough for me. But those are reboots not remakes and they're mostly better. If they start remaking Bond films they might as well retire him. Mad Max Fury Road now that was one hell of reboot, that really blew me away. But than there is Jurassic World and I swear, I have never been so disappointed in a movie as that one. I don't want this MacGyver reboot become the Jurassic World of tv series. You have the good ones but they're still rare like Ash vs. Evil Dead and the bad ones that outnumber the good ones.

Let's just hold our horses for now.

I'm kinda in agreement here that we should just wait and see. Reboots/remakes always run the risk of not being what you want it to be. I've fallen into the trap of getting over-excited about things and have been seriously let down.

These days I stay away from the hype and just kinda watch things to see how it progresses.

As far as actors are concerned, I try not to get roped into that either... mostly because I know the actor just won't compare to RDA, but I want to be fair and give the new actor a chance.

LOL. The mere suggestion of it has already split the camp right down the middle. laugh.gif
No doubt a slippery slope though - recreating the '80s magic/charm, redoing the signature pyrotechnics, RDA
stunts, special effects with CGI & replacement of RDA himself. That's just for starters. Could
pull it off, let's see ....... hmm.bmp

I'd like them to still use RDA, and before you all scream impossible, I don't think it is. If this is about Mac BEFORE what we've seen, then why not get RDA to do some voice overs as if he's telling us what he got up to when he was young? I LOVED the voice overs in the original, and missed them when they stopped. That way we'd still have a link to the original - because I really do think 80's TV is hard to recreate.

Don't get me wrong, I will try this, but its going to have to be brilliant to win me over. JJ's Star Trek definitely won me over though, so it is possible. (I haven't seen Star Wars yet, so cant comment)

As for Casino Royale, I must be the only Brit who didn't like it! But then, I was never that mad on Bond, so maybe that's why - I think SkyFall is my favourite of the Craig offerings.

I would be fine with that...

Like I said there hasn't been a word regarding casing etc. so lets wait until we have something before we all start complaining...

Also I read Wan's Idea for the film a north by northwest styled smart espionage thriller with MacGyver at the center. I STILL don't get why people wouldn't want to see that. Again seasons 1-3 MacGyver was a spy simply put and to see a smart espionage thriller with MacGyver at the center but in television form yeah I am still failing to see the downside here.

However one things I feel we should discuss

1. do we know anything about the writers?

For me this all rests on who is going to play MacGyver

Also when will the next bit of news come I am hoping soon.

The voice overs stopped on Downings request. He figured the audience can see what he does, so no reason to explain and I'm glad they did.

The problem is the studios hardly (never even) listens to the fans. You can have that espionage thriller with MacGyver in it but that won't mean it'll work. I don't mind going dark again like Trail To Doomsday but a lot of fans don't want to go that way. What I don't want to see to start the reboot with is a treasure hunt. That's too easy, if I wanna see a treasure hunt, I'll watch Indiana Jones or National Treasure.

It's a very difficult something. If you want to remake or reboot something you got to understand what made it work in the first place and very few people do. They just go their way with it. Jurassic World sucked because of what they did and I can't understand Spielberg didn't step up. OK, so the movie was financially a success but it totally missed the point. It disregarded everything the first movie stood for. Something goes wrong at the expense of several lives and they do it anyway, like they haven't learned anything at all. It shows what greed can do, okay. But what I saw was a movie made by a director who wasn't ready for this kind of project. The script was poorly written and you see that in the movie. The actors were horribly cast. I'm glad Bryce Dallas Howard is a redhead, it was the only thing I liked in that movie. I can't look at Chris Pratt's face again.

I'll be glad if the new crew understands that they don't have to make it more than it is. That they understand the boundaries and make the absolute best within them.

Like I said, it is difficult something but it's more than just write and direct a script about a guy who improvises stuff along the way to get out of a jam.

I didn't like the voice overs because I needed telling what Mac was doing - I liked them because it made it feel like you were connected to the character - like you were part of it all and he was talking to you personally. It just gave it a feel that other shows didn't have. I guess Downing didn't get that. sad.gif

The problem is, you are never ever going to please everyone, all of the time.

If its about the "spy" part of his life, I wouldn't think you'd get treasure hunt episodes anyway?

like I said the treasure hunting aspect could come into play and after watchiung a season and a half of Expedition unknown as well as watch numerous youtube series based on treasures I believe there is a lot of potential for MacGyver.

Plus with a reboot they can do a lot of interesting things they didn't do in the original show.

So when do we think we will get the next bit of news.

So far I have been right in my predictions (I said January/febuary we would get more news and was right) I am trying my luck again we will get more news on this project (including perhaps some casting info) by march at the latest!.

So here's a thought....

The pilot episode could be a retelling of the "how Mac and Pete met" story. MacGyver was 28 when he met Pete in the Murdoc version of the story but would it be so bad if they made him a bit younger, or if we wanted to be really pedantic they could say that Pete made a mistake with how long it had been the first time he told the story- something like that?

lol or I am just really good at guessing

as for what I am hoping for with the Pilot honestly I don't know I wouldn't mind a reworking of the original Pilot (with certain edits being made Mac working for DXS getting his mission from his boss etc)

Basically the pilot needs to do three things in my mind

1. Show who the new MacGyver is and how he is the same and different from the original
2. Show MacGyver's world who he is working for and what he does
3. Show the first clues to a larger mystery that will develop over the first season and keep people coming back each week.

I feel throwing Murdoc in the first episode is not the best idea honestly he should be saved for the second season (like the original) in fact if I was to have a villain from the show come back and be "the first season villain" (basing this off of Arrow and Hawaii 5-0) it would be Dr. Vito think about it fans know who he is he is a compelling character and could be an interesting season long villain in terms of the mystery Personally I would like it to be Discovering a sinister shadow organization known as HIT. Making Hit to be MacGyver's Spectre or Syndicate. and each week learning a bit more about them and the build up to what their goal is....

Like I said Mac could find out at the end of the episode the terrorist who claimed responsibility for the bombing of the underground Lab was found Dead but he was shot before the explosion went off with Peter turning to Mac and saying "there is possibly something far more dangerous out there."

Just spitballing of course.

I liked the voiceovers also, I hope they return in the new version. It was a funny way to get into Mac's head and sometimes we could even relate to what was happening on screen.

Because we have been disappointed before. Each time an announcement has been made it just dies out. I didn't want to say anything in the other topic but I might as well do it here. Like I said before hold your horses.

Suddenly the reboot is greenlit and only two days later the movie too? Call me skeptical but I don't trust it. It might even take a few days to update the statusses of those involved on IMDB but no... sorry but maybe we got even more reason to be concerned. It's a little sudden.

I can't find anything back that confirms it's actually going except this.

It says 'in development'. Development hell most likely. There are now a few brief messages but they're all from last year or older. There are no replies yet whatsoever on the news. Everything I read is pretty old: Paul Walker for Mac? James Gandolfini for Pete?

There is however an explanation on why James Wan is no longer attached to the project and apparently he had to choose between Fast 7 and MacGyver. Right now, I think he did the right thing.

You can read it here.

I don't mean to burst your bubble, honest, but don't bring out the champagne yet because you'll be so disappointed if nothing happens. If this is the real thing, we'll see what happens but it happened more than once an announcement like this came along and in the end it just ended up forgotten.

I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver.
Sometimes you just have to die a little inside to be reborn and rise again as a stronger and wiser version of you.
It's better to be a little sad than to be fake content.

first and foremost yes I am aware of MacGyver's long history in development hell however while we can argue all we want about whether the movie will or wont happen MacGyver the new series will at least cast and film a pilot that much is happening.

Once a tv show is greenlight a pilot is filmed and then the network either goes with the show or passes on it Personally considering one of the writers is part of the successful NCIS franchise I have hopes that it will get picked up. as for the film this reaks of Ztoloff wanting to have his cake and eat it too which is fine by me heck if we can have two Flashes why not two macgyvers?

Like I said the movie part I am excited but weary as well but the tv show is 110% happening at least to pilot stage beyond that well I have high hopes.

So I did a bit of digging and crazy enough we seem to be on target with where we were in 2003

October 2002 young macgyver is announced
Febuary 2003 it is green light
Febuary 25th 2003 Jared Paladacki is cast as Macgyver

So maybe we might know who our new Macgyver is in the next few weeks
