This is the first episode I rated "Average." As much as I enjoy seeing episodes with the Coltons in them with MacGyver, and as much as I like how sweet Mac is with kids, I just couldn't get into this one. I get tired of the "son he never knew he had" plot. Also, the writing seemed a little...stilted. Does anyone else agree?

"Second Chance" was a pretty good episode. Yes, the "son I never knew I had" plot has been done before, and obviously, it's repeated in "The Stringer", but it's still a heartwarming story to see Jesse Colton really take on responsibility as a father and really show love for his son. And I think seeing Willy make the decision to work with MacGyver and Jesse was a great moment too- especially with the girl's life on the line. And one of my favorite MacGyverisms is in this episode- breaking out of the chained in area was pretty cool. I like the improvised blow gun. And Jesse Colton is in this episode too! Cool episode. sak.gif

Sorry MacsChick, I don't agree at all with you. I voted good on this one for these reasons. 'Son he never knew he had' plot is not used before in the series maybe in other shows you meant? We had a 'son-meet-mom' plot with Ma Dalton also involving Jesse Colton. The plot is indeed reused in The Stringer. Besides that... the writing. The episode is written by Robert Sherman a good writer, he also wrote: Two Times Trouble, Deep Cover, Rush to Judgment, The Gun, Jericho Games and The Prometheus Syndrome. What do you mean with stilted? His episodes focusses more on character development then others.
This episode shows for one thing that Jesse Colton isn't that bad after all. It was also proven already in Ma Dalton after some time.

In Two Times Trouble we had the Roxy/Carla thing. Carla wasn't a real bad girl even if she did killed the manager of her sister. She was just so traumatised by the death of her sister that's why the ending was so pleasing of not sending her to jail but to the hospital.

Deep Cover, here I liked Gwen's relationship with the bad guy. She was getting sucked in without even knowing it. Rush to Judgment was also a good one on character. The injured man who had a partnership with his ex-girlfriend he wasn't pleased with. The fact of an innocent man was arrested.

The Gun a more preachy episode, also about teens in trouble, wrong friends. Doing business in the gun industry. This was perhaps not a real character episode but more of a rub it in episode. If you pay much attention to it, you can see what one gun can do to many lives.

Jericho Games another story about a woman in deep misery. Ellen Jericho. High school sweetheart thing. The way she showed her feelings, the way she showed how hurt she was because of MacGyver's rejection. Outstanding. Also I liked the real friendship MacGyver and Nicolae developed. Like real dudes. Dudes are dudes all over the world.

The Prometheus Syndrome. There it was Rachel who was an interesting character. Jealous of Earl's position and couldn't stand the friendship between MacGyver and Earl. She changed when MacGyver saved her and his live. Also the reason of why Prometheus did all that was because of love.

Robert Sherman has an interesting way of writing. He also keeps it with the MacGyver formula. In almost every of his episodes, MacGyver is locked up and he has to find a way out, ocassionally with a fight. Also in these episodes, there's a moment where MacGyver has a rare outburst of frustration. Unable to fix the dialyses machine. 'Some things can't be fixed they need to be replaced.'
Not in Two Times Troubles, neither in Deep Cover.
Rush to Judgment, the moment before they find out the Bird Lady got killed. He has this: 'What is it with you, peoples?'
The Gun when he makes Breeze tell who was the real killer. One of the rare moment he gets really angry.
Jericho Games. 'You lied to me!'
Not in The Prometheus Syndrome.

See why I can't agree with ya?

I also voted this one good. It was nice to see another side to Jesse Colton, who up to now has been just a tough guy. I also liked the "Some things can't be fixed!" scene. It's a nice look at Mac's humanity.

I could understand Willie's anger at Jesse, and liked when Jesse was trying to explain to him what happened. I always enjoyed the episodes when you had Mac trying to solve something, or trying to get everyone out of a situation safely, and at the same time, you had a sideline story with two or more other characters trying to reconcile with each other.

I always enjoy the eps that aren't *just* action, but have more character development and some wisdom and maybe a little social commentary.

i voted good for this one as its not one of my favorites. "some things cannot be fixed scene was great though" you just fell how upset mac is about the machiene being taking away before she could even use it. you get to see the caring father side of jesse coloton. i also believe there is something funny that mac does or says at the end when jesse and he are locked in the cage but i can't recall it at the moment. i believe he does something to get the bad guys attentions. overall good ep! sak.gif

This episode was average to me, but what made it unbearable is the kid's accent and acting. He has that Austin Powers "You are not my fajjjja" where the Dutch guy Goldmember always says "Fajjja."
I laugh too hard to take it seriously when the kid is talking.
But the rest of the episode is pretty good. Just ok though.
I didn't think Jericho Games was a great episode, either, so if the same guy wrote it, it makes sense to me why I didn't love it.
Two Times Trouble wasn't good to me, either.
Isn't it a little coincidental that two former women in Mac's life are killers?
I don't even know ONE killer let alone two, from high school. LOL
Just unbelievable, that's all.

I've just re-watched this eppy and couldn't help wondering why MacGyver was in Bangkok. But it's just occurred to me now that he could well have been the Project Leader for getting the clinic up and running.

It certainly seems like a project he would take on. In fact I can almost see the scene where Pete would offer it to him. smile.gif

It was a great episode. It focused the attention at kids from poor, underdeveloped countries where good medical care for seriously sick is a luxury.. sad.gif and how bad people use kids for their criminal activity mad.gif I like episodes talking about good causes. like Black Rhino, Twenty Questions (teen alcohol abuse), Runners (teen prostitution) It is a good thing that MacGyver creators tackled difficult problems. One more reason to love this series biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I liked this one too. I voted good.

I like the way Jesse, Willy and Mac work together and I like the storyline, it's exactly the sort of thing Mac would be first in line to volunteer for.

But most of all I like his frustration at having found his limits in not being able to fix the dialysis machine. Very well done - we don't see Mac properly upset very often but this was just the right reason for him to lose it. macsak.gif

Drawn on all points, only Mac and Jesse Colton save the episode from sinking.

Indeed, if it is a project that is close to Mac's heart, it will have a more than positive reaction, even more like in "Final Approach".
