Look I know RDA WAS the perfect Macgyver much Like Sean Connery Was the perfect James Bond but honestly I would like to discuss if this planned reimaging show does happen (which lets face it how many times have we as fans been burned by the potential reboots and remakes) who could be Macgyver or Peter thorton etc.

Peter Thorton: Michael Chikles http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004821/?ref_=nv_sr_1 I think he could do very well a tough Peter Thorton in DXS. Just my opinion but that is about it.

Can't think of anyone for the role really. Richard Dean is MacGyver.

It's like the same thing with Indiana Jones.

Shrugs Chris Pratt is being heavily considered to be the new Indianna Jones. For me it's choice of enjoying something new with characters I love.

Also had the film happened Jeremy Renner was the only actor who could of done Macgyver tv wise I don't know but I would hope that if this does happen we all enjoy the ride.

Yeah, I don't know - I mean the magic of RDA's 'Mac' was written in the sort of impromptu way that he was hired. However, the fact that Winkler may be involved - gives hope that lightening could indeed strike twice in the hiring process. Who knows? There are lots of talented actors out there and (now) they could come from any corner of the globe.

I'm a romantic....I worry that the new show will be "modernized" and the innocence of the original will be lost. I can see Mac now, living in a high rise, driving some hopped up ride in Gotham, permanently at night.....another Batman kind of deal. I hope I'm wrong. I really can't think of anyone who could top the original cast.

Josh Holloway (I always said that but I think he'll do) or maybe Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. I hope they keep in mind they choose RDA because he gave the role humanity and I hope they're looking for that as well with the new actor.

I agree here with MacGyverGod, the key for the role is humanity. the actor has to exude that big time.

Honestly I cant really see any one else playing MacGyver other than RDA. The fact is he put a lot of himself on to the caracter and IMO that's what made MacGyver so unique.
Also the time period was very different and that will prove very challenging to adapt the caracter to present times.
In any case I'm willing to give it the benefit of doubt and who knows I'm might be pleasantly surprised!

We do have interpretations of Macgyver outside of RDA though (although it's only a few) the young Macgyver pilot the five part comic book series and the novel Macgyver On Ice true not a lot of source material outside the original show however the actor playing Mac should read the comic and the novel to at least get sense of the man outside of RDA (although he should still watch all 7 seasons and both TV movies as well)

I agree they have to watch the 7 seasons and the movies.

TBH I could see an older actor playing MacGyver set in this day and age, maybe solving problems caused by the modern era by deploying solutions based on the simpler world that they grew up in.

Whoever it is, I'd have a really controversial pilot with Mac pitted against the NRA over the gun debate and after yet another mass shooting threat hits a bit too close to home. Mac catches the shooter before he can do any damage, with his old tried & true tricks, and saves the day. Then he gives a guest lecture to the NRA over the wisdom of more/better ... less archaic screening for firearms possession. The ratings would go through the roof with that scenario ... just because everybody is so rabid on the issue ,,, one way or another.

I like the way you think Maclover! I think it would be a great mix, current problems and a seasoned problem solver. I know it's a reach, but wouldn't it be great if RDA came on board again? Like I've been saying, I just hope they keep Mac his loveable, bare bones self....maybe an I phone but not a huge techno. Even DXS ran fairly simple originally.

You're right about ratings, Joe...the way the population is polarized, it would definitely get some attention!

The new series is going to be aimed at a new audience with those who appreciated the original.

It is probable that the new star will no doubt go through some existing material such as a few episodes of the series to establish a connection with the character. But I doubt they will hand him all existing source material as there will be a time constraint involved.

Either way, it is supposed to be a story about a young version of the character. It is pointless to examine later material as the character evolved over time. So it may be who he became. But not who he was at first. It is his younger side we have yet to explore.

Maybe RDA could play the role of the father figure i.e. the Pete Thornton figure?

Probably. And with it being a prequel of sorts, he wouldn't fit the Thornton character profile.

I think we all know RDA is not going to be part of this, no matter how hard we want it. If we can accept that, maybe the reboot won't be so bad after all. But we can all dream right.

I guess if its going to slot in a time-line before the original series then there is no way RDA will be able to reprise a role in it.

There's another way....

Make the show a sequel set in 2015 with MacGyver's 20-something son being recruited into the DXS after he graduates university. RDA plays the original MacGyver who takes a back seat to his young son but gives advice and help along the way and would essentially replace the Pete Thornton role while Macs son gets all the action and is the main lead.

The DXS boss would be a whole new character to the show, or maybe a nice twist would be for it to be Ed Gantner from the pilot episode.

Now THAT I'd be all over!!
