Well from as long as I can remember, we have some pretty amazing photographers around here. Some of you have been to the most beautiful places too. Well....we wanna see your shots!!!

Just a few rules though...
1. As much as we would love to see your HD pics in all their glory, please be mindful of the size of the pics you upload.
2. It's a no-brainer but no pics of anything offensive / gratuitous / rude etc...
3. Please limit your uploads to what you really want to show. In other words if you have a pic of one landscape, please don't upload 10 pictures of the same thing. smile.gif
4. Have fun!!!!

I will start..

A picture I took from a temple I visited a few years back.

Here is one and from high above via aerial drone. Each year ice fishing communities spring up along
the frozen lakes & rivers in the more northern climates. The ice can become up to a meter thick and becomes
strong enough to support ice fishing shelters, people and trucks as well. Skating, iceboating, snowkiting, snowshoeing, of course hockey is also played out on these seasonal, frozen waterways. ]

On my way to Hartbeespoort Dam! jeep.gif Not the best quality, but still looks great! biggrin.gif

About that Joe's aerial photo. You know lot of people in these days say that the world has become much smaller place. And from that picture, I can really see the roundness of the earth biggrin.gif Great picture

Posted by: Joe SAKic 27 February 2016 - 05:55 AM
... haha, roundness through some slight camera distortion.biggrin.gif Thanks MiracleMac! Here is one of the same area, only from a much lower altitude, & now several weeks later with the spring melt in progress. The wharf/lawn visible in the first image is now totally submerged under water and the drone is now focusing on the lighthouse that is barely recognizable from the much higher height image.

Here's another with a subject that's a bit unusual for many to see. A covered bridge. At one point there were over 300 of these structures throughout the province, and now only about 60 remain. Of course they were built in a time when horse & carriage was still commonplace on the roads and the motorized vehicle was just in it's infancy. With the massive transport beasts that travel the roads today, they are just not that practical anymore and are kept up mostly for tourism and aesthetic value. You can see similar structures in the film, "The Bridges of Madison County'.

Incidentally, the were more commonly know as 'kissing bridges' back in the day .... mainly because young men would train their horses to stop just about smack, dab in the middle of the bridge and in so that they could still a kiss from their girl and in total privacy. An early macgyverism perhaps? hmm.bmp biggrin.gif

Jedi, did you guys not own a rake? unsure.gif (kidding, & your Dad has a gr8 eye by the way!) I've never raked a leaf in my life, unless it was for a pile to jump into. thumbsup.gif Here is a (not so) ugly duckling - it's a male common goldeneye.

Posted by: denizen 8 March 2016 - 08:17 PM
Joe, with the amount of snow you guys get, I'm surprised you ever see any leaves. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Joe SAKic 9 March 2016 - 04:18 AM
Snow/Santa Claus comes in winter, flowers/taxes in spring, fruit & road construction in summer, leaves/Halloween in autumn. tongue.gif Four very, very distinct seasons. Thing is that the snow/ice will soften/shred the leaf blanket and then the first lawn mow of the spring nicely mulches it all up, and presto no leaves! Yet, I've had neighbors who literally wait by the window and watch for leaves to fall and then run out with a rake and bag to scoop them up or pay hundreds for a service to do the same. unsure.gif Yup, lots of leaves ....

Posted by: Jediferret 9 March 2016 - 08:00 AM
LOL! Yes, we did own a rake... more than one actually. Dad and I just never did much yard work. Usually he did what you did... waiting until after winter, than mowed it all when it wasn't so muddy.

Fall is actually my favorite season because it's not really hot or cold. It's just right for doing activities. Usually our Bourbon Festival is in September, and the Arts and Crafts Fair is in October, which we had lovely weather for those last year. It was FUN!

I'll have to head down to Bernheim this Fall and get some pictures. smile.gif

OK, I've just seen this thread. It depends on whether you are after a decent record shot, or whether you are looking for photographic genius. The first I might be able to do, the second I doubt.

This to my mind was America in a nutshell:

The museum is worth a look if you ever get there, but take a picnic if you don't like Mickey D's - there was literally no-where else to get lunch, so for the first, and I hope only time, I actually ended up to buying some.

McDonald's has come along way since their drive-in burger days. I had a feta, spinach & egg wrap for breakfast this morning and it was very, very good. Nowadays, their coffee is as good as you'd get from any of the specialty coffee shops, and their bathrooms are always ultra clean. Could do a lot worse in the world today. Having said that, I hate getting railroaded for any food choice as is so often the case in amusement/tourist attractions. But really, the menu & caloric choices are quite varied in 2016 and probably much more healthy than your average pub or chipper.

Breaking news ,,,, I've made a new friend in recent weeks. She's got a cute face, a sleek body, big round eyes, & like me, is always on the hunt for a fresh, seafood dinner!

No, normally I don't have an issue with plus size gals .... but she(grey seals) weighs in at
over 500lbs and you have to keep a constant eye on her around the fish bowl,
and at seafood restaurants. biggrin.gif

I don't have an issue with fast food as a general rule, but I've never liked the MacDonalds marketing model - hook 'em as kids then they buy as adults. I went to a marketing attitudes seminar once - they showed pictures of logos/famous faces and asked for the immediate audience gut reaction. They showed the golden arch logo and the audience (bar me - I said 'yuk') said as a single voice (there was about 300 there) 'Happy!' I was little short of astounded. I must admit out of choice I've always picked Burger King (other fast food outlets are available ;-) )

Grey seals are great - we have them in some numbers in places in the UK. I didn't get a photo, but did have a close encounter once whilst working as a scientist on a muddy estuary in Devon one day, I was out in waders in the mud with a colleague and a grey seal popped their head out of the water only about 10 metres away and watched us with great interest for about 15 minutes. It wasn't scared at all.

Posted by: Joe SAKic 25 April 2016 - 04:36 AM
Aha, I knew there was an ulterior motive there! biggrin.gif Hmmm, I never considered that particular angle, and I do run into this topic/debate along with the Walmart model on forums quite often. They do put a lot back into the community though, with Ronald MacDonald House which provides housing near medical facilities for families of seriously ill children. They also send thousands of underprivileged kids to camp each summer, and their hiring programs are incredible career building blocks for our youth. So not all so evil-handed really. wink.gif

I'm curious, in the UK, where do coaches, guardians take youth sports teams after competitions? In Canada/US, to have a van of 20 ravenous hockey players after a game, means 'fast food' NOW! and McDonalds et al have fit nicely for this requirement over the years.

Okay, back on topic. The seals come in the spring and fatten up on the fish entering the rivers amid the highest tides in the world, here. Their pups will soon be born and they will be gone further out to sea, and apparently they will go into a period of fasting soon after.

Here is another that's just caught (what looks to be) an American eel. Yum! blink.gif

Ooo...mesas and buttes - we learned about those in physical geography at school, but I've never seen them. It's like where the bird nested in Mac episode' Eagles' :-D

In the UK, they'd make those sports teams take a packed lunch! That's what the letters home always say.

Someone's been doing their ancestry research biggrin.gif We learned a lot about the Civil war when we visited Manassas battlefield last year, there are lots of memorable people and deeds within the history - it must be interesting to have someone in your own heritage.

I always think its kind of interesting that George Washington's grandfather is buried in my town's church - it's funny how odd bits of American heritage crop up all over the place.

Posted by: Joe SAKic 24 July 2016 - 05:46 PM
Thanks Maclover and yes, those 'boat people' usually have a few extra shekels in their pocket for a purchase as such.biggrin.gif The advantage with drones at sunset is that you can alter/experiment with your altitude until you find just the right spot/angle where those colorful hues are reflecting off the water at their most intense level. Too high or too low and you lose most of that color magic.

Dashboardonfire - nice! We are off to Switzerland a week on Wednesday to stay with my long term friend on the outskirts of Zurich - a regular trip for us. I like Zurich - it is a beautiful city, we will swim in the lakes and also the Rhine and do some exploring. Last time I took the kids to the Rhinefall for the first time - it isn't on the scale of Niagara, but it is fairly spectacular. I'll have to see if I can dig out some Swiss pictures.

Lovely pictures of Switzerland, guys! Never been ... yet! But, I did make it to Green's Point Lighthouse for sunrise a few days ago. It was me and about 1000 mossies watching those pastel hues, the deet did not seem to deter them and thank goodness the Zika carrying one has not arrived north of the border as of yet. surprise.gif

Lovely Joe, you can't beat a shot with some water in. I've found loads of lake shots in Switzerland, but I need to spend quite a lot of time (which I haven't got at the moment) with the edit tool as I wasn't concentrating when I took them and the water is flowing out one side or another (if you know what I mean laugh.gif )

Did you move into a new place, Jedi?

Posted by: Jediferret 8 August 2016 - 03:46 AM
Nah.... same place I've been in. My air-conditioner unit died on Friday, so I spent most of Saturday hanging out with my landlord and his friends while they put in a new unit. They had to do some minor construction, which is why there are tools and stuff all over the place. I was bored (and hot), so I took a few pictures. lol

Posted by: denizen 8 August 2016 - 05:25 AM
Ah. And here i thought you were "MacGyvering" it yourself. biggrin.gif

Weird to see your place on another side of the world. Some things you pick up as normal, other things are so different compared to your neck of the woods.

I think you need a frowning or grrrring Mac image on your fridge, Jedi. mad.gif whistle.gif The smiling thing makes it kinda alright to open & raid, doesn't it!? Different things indeed ..... an air conditioner!!!!! Not needed in Atlantic Canada, very few people have one, as it may only be needed for a handful of days a year ... re: zero humidity. Another spectacular sunset the other night:

Posted by: Macgyver1985 9 August 2016 - 12:57 AM
Beautiful picture, Joe! biggrin.gif

Posted by: Jediferret 9 August 2016 - 05:04 AM
denizen - LOL! I can't MacGyver crap... But, I did manage to figure out what the issue was, which was a blown capacitor. The landlord just figured it would be better to buy a new one since the other one was pretty old and not really energy efficient anymore. I believe that's why my last electric bill was so high, because it wasn't working properly. I'm not gonna complain... XD

When I finish redecorating and getting my place organized (lolz), I'll take some pictures of my place. It's actually bigger than it looks in the pictures. I think the angle makes it seem a lot smaller... and it ALWAYS looks smaller when the door is open, for some odd reason. O_o XD

Joe - I probably have a stern MacGyver picture somewhere. lol Would you like me to send you some of this humidity? We don't want it. smile.gif

Sunset pictures are always amazing up north. Do you ever get to see the Northern Lights that way? I always missed them in NY.

Hmmm .... I can think of some 'Southern Comfort' that I might like to 'import' ... but the heat & humidity ain't high up on that list. tongue.gif

We are at the very outer limit of the Northern Lights 'show' .... so when it does happen, it's very, very, low in the Northern sky. Ironically, the best I've personally seen it was along the 401 in Eastern Ontario, near Cornwall .... it was in August, and spectacular!!! Alaska & the Yukon are the places to be on this continent, though.

Incidentally, there is a theory as to why the Northeast gets a lot of really colorful pastel hues in their sunrises/sunsets ..... and it's mostly due to pollutants/particulate/emissions travelling the Jetstream from the industrial belts further west, suspended in the air, and refracting those twilight rays, etc. Probably some scientific truth to that .... dunno.

A local photographer caught some decent footage of it a few years back (this location about a 90 minute drive from my door):

Thanks Denizen .....perhaps, not exactly - no two places are the same .... but beauty is all around everybody and in every location in this world. Interestingly, the most common comments I get from people when out photographing is "you can't be from around here if you're taking pictures of that!" Meaning (I think, paraphrasing/summing up) .... nothing in this area is worthy of photographing you idiot and you're wasting your time. When I assure them I am local, they just shake their head and drive on. unsure.gif ...... but with a little time, effort, prep work, and of course digital macgverisms - there's always a chance of snapping the odd gobsmacker. MacG.gif

I wholeheartedly agree that beauty is found everywhere. Not disputing that. Just your way of life is obviously different to mine.

Living in a suburban jungle as opposed to the great outdoors has its disadvantages. biggrin.gif

Yeah, the reality -> perception is that the wages tend to diminish the further outback one dwells. But in this day and age and with telecommunications so omnipresent - it is possible to have your cake and eat it too in these respects. Never without some sacrifices though ..... biggrin.gif

Well I can tell you how to do that much. Not sure you're gonna like the answer .... but it's guaranteed to win each & every time. Buy a ticket for every number combination in the draw!!! sakopen.gif thumbsup.gif Okay, if that's not doable, pick some good vibe, high frequency numbers, buy as many tickets as you can responsibly afford, and play the same ones each draw. smile.gif

I didn't get to take many pictures as it was rather overcast on Friday. It was hella busy, so we missed a few opportunities, but there's always next year!!

Couldn't decide if color of black and white was better for this photo.... still not sure to be honest.

I have a tendency towards black & white for subject photos, such as people, faces, etc because colors can be distracting and I personally think B & W lets you focus on the subject of the photo.

I've been video documenting the plight of the fox family for the past three months and plan to continue to do so until the first snow flies in the autumn. Eight of them in all, 3 silver(black) kits, 3 red kits, the Vixen and the Dog (male) Fox. So far it's been a roller coaster of emotions with all you can expect of a wild fox family living openly in an urban environment. A national media outlet even ran a story on them, which resulted in way too many gawkers, idiots(one guy released his hound dogs as he approached the den to see if his dogs could catch one - madness!) and overly kind people encroaching on their territory. Will post a link to the finished product when complete ....

Posted by: Joe SAKic 19 September 2017 - 08:48 AM
Thanks Guys!!!

Jedi, the night shots are from the 'moon glow' where the pilots all get together and fire up their (very translucent) balloons as twilight fades into nightfall ..... a favorite for all enthusiasts! The concept started at the Albuquerque fiesta and known as 'balloon glow' or 'night glow' .... anyway you say it, quite magical!

Barry, the good news is that the whales should be headed down your way soon and for the winter months. Hard (like someone we all know&admire) not to get caught up in their plight and very addictive to spend some time with them. Some people just travel the world (a la a rock concert groupie) and hangout with them as their fulltime passion/hobby. But in this growing, chaotic world .... they need our help to survive. We've had a particularly disturbing summer and with the (already very depleted in numbers) Northern Right Whale population which you can be certain RDA is keeping tabs on .........

I was in Canada twice, but both times it was not the right season to see it...

Posted by: Joe SAKic 25 October 2017 - 03:39 AM
The season can be very fleeting or not. Some years they (the leaves) will hold on for weeks to their limbs with mind blowing colors, other years they fall very, very suddenly with very dullish colors. All decided by moisture, frost, wind, temperature and the combination of each. For example, an early frost(weakens their grip), followed by a wind storm and they'll all be gone before they get a chance to change ..... as opposed to steadily cooling crisp, clear, calm nights with no frost and then you'll get a lingering 'Picasso' !!!!! surprise.gif

We've had an epic spring thaw this year with record flooding along one of our major river systems. So .... up went the drone to try and document as much of it as I could and while trying to keep my feet dry at the same time ....

Posted by: Jediferret 13 May 2018 - 09:48 AM
The music is oddly appropriate... lol Isn't that what was played during the sinking of Titanic?

Make sure you don't go down with the ship... err... drone.

Great video by the way! smile.gif

Posted by: Joe SAKic 13 May 2018 - 11:42 AM
Yeah, what do ya put for music for something like that? Gotta border on the sombre side I think but with not too slow a tempo. Still something strangely compelling to it all, the power of nature and how it engages, at will, to the urban landscape. hmm.bmp

Not really. They're blaming it mostly on the 'spring melt' which are snows from 'upriver' liquidizing all at once. But is there more to such unusual flooding? (places MacGyver Environmental Cap on). Quite possibly .... logging (re: "Log Jam") can have a huge impact as well. Riverbanks that were once lush with water absorbing roots are not nearly as plentiful as they once were and over hundreds of miles of a river system - this can add up big time!

Posted by: denizen 15 May 2018 - 08:06 PM
Interesting. Somehow it all feels like man is to blame. biggrin.gif

My sister and I went out for breakfast yesterday. I dunno how many of you know Cracker Barrel, but it's a fairly popular "comfort food" restaurant. They have great pancakes. While we were leaving, I saw this lovely Jeep Wrangler and figured I'd share it. biggrin.gif

Sounds like a great place. They're only US based though. Only places we have are franchises like Mugg and Bean.

Posted by: Jediferret 29 May 2018 - 08:08 AM
My family swears by Cracker Barrel. lol I have some pretty good memories of traveling with the family to Florida. We had a bit of a routine because it was a long drive. There was Cracker Barrel, and the South of the Border signs between North and South Carolina.

Also, Mom always had to log the first palm tree we saw, which was right before hitting the Florida state line. Then stop for orange juice at the Florida Welcome Center. lol Good times, good times... XD

The Rio picture is a lot nicer than my first picture on a mountain in Venezuela. All I have are the negatives of the pictures I took of the valley below while standing on top of a mudslide(don't tell my mom) that happened 3 days earlier. That was in 1999. Beautiful valley. The picture didn't do it justice.
