As if we needed any more proof that the 1990s are alive and well, The X-Files will be coming back to Fox as a six-episode limited series. While such a landmark show returning in one form or another is almost expected at this point, the big news is that the entire team is on board: David Duchovny will be returning as Agent Fox Mulder, Gillian Anderson as Agent Dana Scully, Mitch Pileggi as Walter Skinner and creator and executive producer Chris Carter will be overseeing it all.

The X-Files originally ran for nine seasons and spawned two theatrical films; its network run ended in 2002. "I think of it as a 13-year commercial break," Carter said in a statement. "The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories."

Following in the footsteps of '24: Live Another Day'

After a long hiatus from the medium, Carter has tried to work his way back into television over the last few years, with mixed results. He created a new show called The After for Amazon, and while the company ordered it to series the show was subsequently cancelled. He's also been working on a show about Area 51 for AMC, but that has yet to move forward either.

Fox previously brought back a beloved franchise under the "limited series" moniker — essentially a mini-season's worth of episodes — with 24: Live Another Day. That did quite well for the network , and as Variety points out, it also renewed interest in previous seasons, leading to a lucrative new 24 streaming deal with Amazon. That is no doubt just one of several factors behind the return of The X-Files, but for fans only one thing matters: Mulder and Scully are back.

I have a friend that is going to geek out about this! lol I remember X-Files being a big thing in the 90's. I used to always miss it because it came on Fridays, and Friday was my night to wash dishes (and it was always a BIG mess). Makes me glad I only have to wash up after myself now. HAHA

I for one thing am ready to try out the show when I'm done with Walker Texas Ranger if I can find his first season to start with. X-Files is something for deep winter I think. There's the series tv-box with all the season and the two movies. Of course I know the show from 'back in the day' and seen an episode or two. So yeah, I'm up for that.

Worth the wait!

Well I can honestly say that it was worth the wait for sure. It has the same style in sound and lettering, and it was interesting to watch Mulder and Scully dealing with their age vs the technology around them.

The first episode received an impressive audience of around 16.9 million viewers in the US. The second at around 9.6.

The reception has been mixed however. Some love it. Others not so much.

It is a cleverly written episode IMO and needs to be watched twice to understand the full grasp of the story.

Episode two received better reviews even though it has a drop in the audience. Still, not bad.

We get in on the 8th, apparently! I'm looking forward to it, but am still worried it won't have the same feel after all this time. The trailer looked awesome, though, so I have high hopes it will prove me wrong.

Finally! Wow, it felt so weird, like it had never been away! Love how they kept the titles and theme, and Mulder's wee voiceover to recap. It was just like the old days. Now that is how to bring a show back!

Technically the 11th season of The X-Files, this new run will air on Fox’s schedule either later this year or early next. Starting off with strong ratings, the previous six-episode revival of the FBI conspiracy drama debuted January 24, 2016 on the very revival friendly Fox.

Everyone is back for the 11th Season. It will consist of 10 episodes. That will include David & Gillian. Confirmed!

There is also a rumor of some new characters coming into the mix. But that is not yet confirmed.

Finally got around to watching the last episode of season 11. Ended off in the usual, what now?! kinda way, which leaves me wondering whatever will happen next?

Gillian Anderson has confirmed that she's hanging Scully's hat and Fox said they have no plans at the moment. But with the way it all ended one has to wonder.

The X-Files never really ends so i suspect it will return in one form or another. I guess we will have to fight the future.
