MacGyver Online Forums > Macs Loft > Legend vs. Brisco County Jr

Anyone a fan of both Legend and Brisco County Jr? I'm a fan of Bruce Campbell almost as much as RDA, and the comparisons between the new shows are numerous (even Pete from Brisco play a similar baddie in Legend lol), and Brisco went off the air just a couple years before Legend started. Anyone know if RDA every acknowledged Brisco? I know Legend is one of his favorite roles.

Between the two I'd probably have to give Brisco the edge - I would have also guess it was created after Legend, not before, based on effects lol.

I'm surprised there aren't more Legend or Brisco fans in here!

Legend isn't really known here, or at least where I live and I haven't even heard of Brisco County Jr at all, though I also like Bruce Campbell a lot. When I met RDA in Ghent on the comic con it was the only time I really found dvd's of Legend. Though only one season, they asked 70.00 euros for it. I kid you not. I never saw it before nor after it again. It really was a one time thing apparently but getting his signature and photo was expensive enough.

You'll only get MacGyver here.

I think Legend came to DVD a few years back finally, it’s $9.99 on Amazon here for the series. (There’s also a website you can watch the series for free). I just watched it, and having already been a fan of Brisco (because I’m a big Bruce Campbell Evil dead fan) couldn’t help but notice the similarities. RDA often says it’s his favorite role, so I was curious. Also interesting that in a totally different way he’s still playing an anti-gun character solving things through science lol

I actually think I give the edge to "Legend," though I thoroughly enjoyed them both. I've watched the whole thing twice. I can see why it wouldn't hold enough people's attention, but I still think it's got a lot of charm for people who enjoy RDA's little corner of the television world. It's especially fun if you've already seen "MacGyver" and "Stargate SG-1," because the title character is basically a mashup of RDA's two most famous roles. His nature is to be Jack O'Neill, but he's forced by circumstances to keep up a MacGyver image.

"The Adventures of Brisco County Jr," on the other hand, is just utter Bruce Campbell zaniness at the peak of his nineties glory, which is great if, again, you're into that kind of thing. (He's probably my favorite character in the Hercules/Xena-verse).

One thing I did like about both of them was the way they ended up being modern/pro-science Westerns. It's become incredibly common for that genre to just be pure nostalgia, treating the "taming of the West" as the tragic death of a heroic age (think of how the coming of the railroad is usually portrayed in these stories). It was pretty refreshing, therefore, to watch a couple of shows whose heroes are totally old school cowboys, but treat new science and the modern age as something exciting and to be embraced, not something tragic and to be mourned.

Legend is the start of the Steam Punk genre. smile.gif
