If you want to time travel, just go to a JCPenney store and you'll be transported back to the 1970s. One of the departments has a sign on the wall that reads "Watches and Calculators". They should change it to "Stuff My Cell Phone Does".
This statement was made by a comedian I saw several months ago. Having said this, and with nearly everyone having a cell phone of one kind or another, I was curious as to how many of us still wear wrist watches?
I'll admit I haven't worn one since 2007 (when I worked in Kuwait, Afghanistan and Dubai with the USO and didn't have my cell phone with me). Since then I've always just checked my cell phone, which I have to dig out of my pocket or remove from my belt holster/clip.
However, since I've become more active on this website, it's re-inspired my wanting to dress in a similar fashion to MacGyver (not wear the exact same things Mac wore, just wear things that have that MacGyver look and feel).
Having said all this I starting wearing one of my Victorinox watches today, after having replaced the leather strap that came with it, the watch in the middle of the photo below.
I'll be wearing the Victorinox watch on the left at work, as it matches my uniform.
My TIMEX Quartz Military Field Watch, similar to Mac's, will also be worn on a daily basis but not t the same time as the blue ringed Victorinox, that would just look weird.
The two watches I won't wear are my Victorinox with the red circle around the face, like Mac's and my Casio DW-1000 Digital watch, also like Mac's. These two watch will be displayed as part of my MacGyver collection. A note about these two watches, I owned each of them before I saw that MacGyver wore them. Great minds think alike, eh?
So what about everyone here? Do any of you still wear watches?

I still wear a watch. I feel weird not wearing one. I have to wear one for my job anyways. I rarely look at my cell phone for the time. I think I like going old school (at least for now).

Just bought a new one. A Casio. My old one had a snapped strap. Tried to fix it myself but it was always temporary. Still waiting for the instruction manual though. Than today I realized I still had a spare watch. Could've saved me money, but what the hey, it is a cool watch though.

I wear a watch everyday (usually). I'm actually looking to buy a new one and have been looking at Victorinox myself. I LOVE military style watches anyway.

I used to have a watch on 24/7. Then in college, I took a class titled Intro to Adventure Education. The professor, Dan Creely, is my real life mentor; MacGyver being my on-air mentor. Intro to Adventure Edication was definitely a class that Mac would approve of. We did rock climbing, repelling, team building, some wilderness skills and such. A big event in the class was out backpacking and climbing trip.
Dan would not allow to have watches on the trip, he said in the wilderness we had no need to know the time. We also learned to tell how much sunlight was left in the day by just using your hand. But part of what he wanted to teach was that watching the time can had to our stress and reduce living in the moment. Since that camping trip, like in 1993, I have only worn a watch when I needed to, like work. Of course since the cell phone I haven't worn one at all.
Of anyone wants to know how to tell how much sunlight you have left it is easy. It only takes a second. Face the sun. Hold you arm out straight, toward the sun. With your palm turned so that you are staring at you palm. Line the top edge of your top finger under the sun. Then you notice which finger the horizon lines up with. Each finger represence about 15 minutes. So if the horizon is below your pinky finger you have over an hour left. Ring finger would be about 45 minutes, middle finger 30 minutes. This helps to low how much time you light for setting up camp, cooking dinner, collecting firewood, etc.

yeah I feel naked without my watch on. I usually only carry a phone with me when I go out, so when I'm at home my watch is the only thing I carry with time on it.
I have one of the original MacGyver Timex watchs, but don't wear it because they are quite fragile (they were originally made as a disposable watch for the military so they weren't made to last very well). I wear the watch below as by EDC. It's quite rugged and very water proof (100 meter) and most importantly I like the design.

I don't wear a watch. After my faithful watch stopped working I went shopping for a new one but couldn't find one I liked so I postponed the purchase. I found that I could manage well without one and now I'm used to the "naked feeling".
My cell phone is an "old fashioned" one (not Smart phone). I don't carry it with me everywhere I go.
How do you make a paperclip bracelet, AussieMacFan?

I wear a solar powered Citizen Eco-drive. I'd feel totally undressed without it on!
I know how that feels. I need to feel a watch on my left wrist. Mine says on top: Tough Solar. The seller told me this watch uses solar power to load up the battery. I did notice though that the watch can go off if there's no light source. Does that have to do with the battery not getting any kind of warmth or something?

I dunno - mine has never stopped and apparently needs only 10 mins of direct light (doesn't even have to be bright sunlight) per day to recharge

I used to wear a watch daily and felt naked with out it on as well. But in the last couple years I find that typing on my laptop at work the wrist band sits in just the wrong spot where my wrist touches the edge of the computer. Today for example, I had a watch on this morning but now it's sitting on my desk next to me. It was bothering me while typing.
I sometimes use the cell phone for the clock, but I keep a pedometer in my pocket most of the time (the pocket without the SAK). This pedometer has a clock on it, so I don't have to wear a watch.
I'm still a big fan of watches. So, when I am out on our research ship away from home, I wear my Timex Ironman watch at all times. It's my alarm clock, tells me what the date (and day of the week) is, and can be set to military time (which is how we record our data).

Neato! That's really interesting! I'll have to make myself get used to doing it that way. Never knowwhen it might come in handy.

I still wear watches mainly for telling time(obviously) AND to match what I wear. I personally think my Swatch watch is perfect with my blue-grey-white jacket because they're pretty much the same color. Plus, I don't own a phone and I don't think I'm gonna need one anytime soon.
I also love seeing those glow-in-the-dark hands. It's like magic.

This is my watch. It's my school colors and it was on clearance for $4. It did have silicone around the face but I removed it because it made it look huge. The paracord it tight enough and stiff enough to hold it in place.

Ever since I posted this topic I've noticed people wearing watches more than I did before as well as watches for sale in stores.
I was surprised to find a replacement watch band for Mac's Casio DW-1000 digital watch, a watch that is at least 28 years old, at Wal*Mart. Now all I have to do is find my watch. I know it's somewhere in my place, I just don't know where. I'm sure I put it somewhere that I'd remember it.

There's a new kind of watch I think just came out called "I'm Watch". It's an Android Smartphone on your wrist. I think Apple is making one called iWatch. It's pretty cool. All I could think of is Micheal Knight's watch he used to communicate with Kitt (I forget what it was called).
I ALMOST bought the N7 Ambassador watch from Bioware, but it was $475 and about to get sold out, so I decided to sleep on it. Good thing too because it was sold out by the next morning.
I'm currently wearing a fashion watch from Maurices (which is a woman's fashion store). It's a military style watch, but nothing on it works. It just tells time. It was about $15. I got it a couple of years ago and it works just fine. The wristband is metal and painted black, but the paint is wearing off...

I use to break every watch I wore. Not intentionally, and I have no idea when any of them where actually damaged, but I would look down and it would be busted, cracked, or the glass missing out of them. Over and over this use to happen. And try explaining to your parents when you're a kid that you really have no idea what happened to your watch. :\
The last watch survived until I sold it though. How I obtained it in the first place is almost unbelievable. I had wanted a Victronox Swiss Army one for years, the basic looking model with the white face and leather band. But with a $150 price tag and me being poor, it just wasn't gonna happen. One day I was walking home from somewhere along some railroad tracks and saw a watch lying there in the rocks. I picked it up and about fell over -- it was the Swiss Army one I had been wanting for so long! I remember just standing there staring at it for the longest time because I couldn't believe it and was trying to figure out if I was asleep and dreaming or what was going on. I mean what are the chances?! It was quite scratched up, like the previous owner was pretty rough with it, but it worked fine. I was always careful when I wore it so it didn't wind up like all my other watches. Eventually I decided someone else might get more use of it than I did, so I sold it.
As for why I never tried to find it's owner, I had no idea how to even begin. I figured it would have next to impossible.
Today I don't wear a watch anymore, but it isn't because I have a phone. I just don't like to feel pressured and constrained by time, so I'd rather not know it as much as I can get away with.
I've always worn a wrist watch and have a small collection of Swiss Army models. I have two Swiss Army original 'originals', now a discontinued model, which Mac wore in 'Strictly Business'.
This is a particularly sporty and good looking watch for casual and everyday usage. It's nice not to have to reach in a pocket in order to know the time and I always wear one for my exercise/runs so that I can time workouts and, of even greater importance, periodically check my pulse for target heart rates.
A commentator on the hockey broadcast the other night used the expression and as the game drew to an end that 'time was ticking down in this contest' .... and then added that 'even though time does not really tick in this day and age' - referring to the ever dwindling usage of analog watches/clocks.
So much brilliant literature through the ages written about this action and often compelling sound and now - slowly, slowly like an hour hand - relegated to the endangered list.
