MacGyver Online Forums > News Desk > MacGyver comic gains new artist

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 22 December 2011 - 04:57 PM

A couple of months ago, Becky Cloonan stepped down from the art duties of MacGyver: Fugitive Gauntlet due to a severely over scheduled workload - and the team behind the comic started a search for a replacement across the globe that included Twitter, Facebook and comic websites.

"The response was incredible," said Tony Lee, co-writer of the miniseries, "and the amazing thing was that pretty much every person that applied and drew a concept for us was a massive fan of the show."

With the winner decided by a judging panel including MacGyver series creator Lee David Zlotoff and Image Publisher Eric Stephenson, in the end Irish artist Will Sliney was given the position. An already internationally established artist, Sliney is no stranger to licensed comics, having already worked on Farscape for BOOM! Studios and Star Wars: The Clone Wars in the UK for Panini.

A lifelong MacGyver fan who has named the iconic character as one of his 'Eighy Awesome Eighties Action Heroes', an ongoing art challenge he has on his blog at http://sliney.blogspot.com/, Sliney will work with the creative team in redesigning MacGyver for the twenty first century. Becky Cloonan will still be involved as design consultant and cover artist for the five book series.

MacGyver: Fugitive Gauntlet  will be released by Image Comics, and the first issue will début at the San Diego Comic Con in 2012.

OMG! This is horrific!
It's Justin Bieber's older brother!

btw I don't think they are allowed to use the one of 'Mac' with the ice cream.
That belongs to Paramount..

And the "leaning on the plane" scene under the red X too.

This is an official release from Lee Zlotoff and Tony Lee though so they must have it cleared somehow... I hope.

As for the hair, it's not as bad as the horrid shag style RDA has in the later seasons. laugh.gif

Actually, I liked his hair later on, especially in (my favorite) season 6.

On second thought, the upper picture also reminds me of Dalton James, who played Mac's son.

Great news, the project it´s on the way-

Becky Cloonan's website is here:

Even if she's not involved n the project anymore, it's probably a good guess to assume the artwork will be similar to work she's done in the past, which looks pretty good.

Please don't mention Bieber's name.

Besides the hair maybe it looks cool. However there are a couple of episodes in season 7 where Mac has his hair over his forehead.

Lost Treasure of Atlantis.

Gunz 'N Boyz.

But on this one he looks the best.

The Hood. That's the style I try to keep.

But I think with modernizing it that this haircut on the comic is the latest style of long hair. I see a lot of kids wearing it like that.

Hello guys, is this true the San Diego Comic Con in 2012 will be taking place in the Comic-Con International (July 12-15 at the San Diego Convention Center)

So that means we have to wait 6 more months, and how often are comics release, weekly or monthly?

This new hairstyle is not so bad!
It's only update to the present day. It's not the "old" mullet of the '80s but I like that.

(I always liked the Mac's haircut of the second season.)

P.S.

MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone!!

MacGyver is not a kid.

I agree with you on Mac's hair in the last season. No mullet, just nice long hair, sometimes falling in his face. The 'new' hair in the pictures looks unnatural to me. When a person moves or jumps about, the hair does not stay fixed on the forehead like that, unless it's kept in place by hairspray. I ask you, can you imagine Mac with hairspray? blink.gif

Well he had highlights. whistle.gif

You mean the comic picture? Well it's only a promo graphic and there's nothing to say we wont see his hair "blowing in the wind" when it needs to I guess.

Why? Do you realy think that Mac don't has never used hairspray? He jumped, he fought... but his hair ( and the mullet too) was always neat!

Based on the promo pic I'd say the thing I'm more concerned with is the lack of detail. I hope the actual art has not only the detail in his cloths (leather jacket for example) but in his faciel expressions. RDA is famous for his expressions. No panel should ever be drawn with MacGyver expressionless. Its as important as the overall story.

Check this site out, they have images of "UNUSED" MacGyver comic art.

Very interesting, thanks MacGyverPF!

I think they'v chosen the best artist.
Still worrying about the Bieber look, though...

The 'Beiber' reference in one of the images made me laugh.

The only one I like there is the Robert Rath one.

I agree. He looks a bit like 'our' Mac, too.

He seemed to use quite a LOT of hairspray, actually. Maybe not so much in season 7 when it was longer and kind of floppier, but he definitely used it in season 2-6.
(I remember actually going to the barbers during maybe the fourth season of MacGyver, and taking a photo of him with me so that barber could style it like that, and the first thing he mentioned it, "You need a lot of hairspray for that.")

That belongs to Paramount..

The original image might belong to Paramount, but I don't think they can prohibit somebody from selling a drawing of a person eating an ice cream cone, can they? That would be odd.
Same thing with him leaning on the plane-- they're not selling the actual image that Paramount owns, they're just selling a drawing of it. I really doubt there's any problem with that.

As it was explained to me, the whole copyright of MacGyver vs. ownership by Lee Zlotoff is a grey area at best.

He can't take whole parts or ideas from an episode and use it, but he can make reference to them. What that exactly means is part of the greyness, but things like this are certainly within the realm of what he's allowed to use.

LOL. I can see you sitting there with your picture and your expectations.. Did you get what you wanted? wink.gif

A lot depends on the quality of the hair. Every head is different. If you have a lot of hair, and thick hairs at that, your hair will stand up more easily than with slick thin hair. I have friends who don't need hairspray or anything, they comb it with their fingers every way they want. Other friends need to style their hair (I am talking about men, by the way) with hairspray, gel and wax.

So maybe your kind of hair needed a lot of spray, I don't think Mac's, or rather RDA's, did. He had lots of thick hair, that mostly needed the right cut. The haircut is important, too. When it is done well, it needs less styling with gel, spray etc.

Gee, I never thought I'd talk this long about hair. Then again, it's Mac's hair, and that is a topic happy.gif

It has to be a generic representation because RDA owns the rights to his own likeness/looks/etc and how they are used; and because this is a new venture (not a reuse of work he has already done) this would require his permission to use his likeness.
