Those of you who know me at all know I am our resident Mac Gear nut- from the SAK used in every episode, to the watch, to the vehicles, for some reason I have always been fascinated with the things MacGyver valued and considered essential and worthy of his use.

While watching the trailer for the upcoming MacGruber movie, the old habit kicked in and I found myself pausing and zooming, trying to catch a glimpse of what MacGruber will be sporting.

It would seem they put a little effort into research- at first I had a "wtf?!" reaction to the Miata/little red car, but it occurred to me that it is a throwback to the Heist, which also featured a red roadster (albeit a different brand):

I can't remember if the MG Midget in the Heist had a cargo rack on the trunklid like the Miata does, but if it did, this is some attention to detail at work! Props to the MacGruber props department (haha pun not intended) if they really are being that thorough.

Next is the watch- It appears to me that they used the closest thing to the Timex Camper that you can buy retail at a Timex dealer- The Camper seems to have become an online-only item, meaning they probably didn't want to go to that much trouble, plus, as you will see, I think they were trying to somewhat modernize it rather than hunt down 80's vintage items. Here are a couple of shots of the watch:

EDIT: I can see there are raised marks around the outside of the crystal face, the Expedition Camper did not have these, possibly this watch

As for the wardrobe, it seems they went to the trouble of finding a white Henley as actually worn by MacGyver, and the khaki vest is obviously quilted- I'd love it if someone pinned down who makes it:

It appears they have him using some sort of backpack or shoulder bag as well:

Of course they have him wear aviator sunglasses, also a throwback possibly to The Heist:

He is obviously wearing Merrell shoes by the large "M" on the side consistent with their products. The final thing which I also cannot nail down specifically is the model. They look very similar to the Merrell Pivot Lace:

Anyone who wants to add to the thread feel free, I am sure there's more to gather from the trailer. Wish they had worked a SAK in there somewhere sad.gif

Ha, flag it if you like- I just know that when I have logged in for the last few months, it has been MacGruber news periodically on the home page, so I got the idea that it was okay to discuss it. I posted it in the most "off topic" forum we have, I'm not trying to push anything here, just further discussing something that was already up on the site. But like I said, speak your mind- if enough people don't want certain content on the site then things might change. And I really do mean that, I don't want to offend other members or make the site feel like there is something undermining our community. It just seems like MacGruber is here to stay, for better or worse, and I think a lot of us are hoping that this will in some way contribute to a return of MacGyver. I see you haven't commented in the thread about the MacGruber movie trailer, I'd love to hear your opinion on it.

That's a nice damn watch.

Those shoes look pretty kewl too. I could see the real MacGyver wearing those.

It's interesting to see what kind of details they've gone into and how close they've gotten to the mark. THe next question is was it intentional or just dumb luck on their part?

Indeed, but this is the off topic section which is for non-MacGyver related topics and this is actually related to MacGyver in a parodical sort of way. smile.gif

This would also allow us to asses how much of a rip off of MacGyver this movie actually is and how close the association is that they have made.

Most of us would agree that the less association/ripoff the better. If MacGruber is his own character, instead of a MacGyver spoof that's better for us and MacGyver.

The costuming looks like a superficial copy of Mac's outfit in the pilot episode -- so they probably got a couple of production stills and stopped at that. The vanilla suit certainly isn't Mac.

From what I've seen of the SNL sketches, they were doing pastiche costuming all along.

I think that is just the standard costume they used for SNL skits. So nothing extra or special there.

MacGyver never worn a Khaki vest in any episode did he?

Nah, so far as I remember only the blue one in Target: MacGyver. And I agree that it is better they don't copy item per item what Mac had, or even his hair too much. Heck, in that shot where he gets out of the Miata in the Aviators, and especially with his hair the way he has it, he looks more like Phil Collins than Richard Dean Anderson roller.gif

Here is the extended trailer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TF8uL16Uurg&feature=related

He says "I don't use guns", but obviously he does, which I think will be a play on that old joke someone made on the internet about "how to be MacGyver" or something and one of the tips was "Tell people you don't use guns so they don't expect it when you get out your gun in a bad situation."

By and large I think he will be so opposite of MacGyver it would be like using Wyle E. Coyote to parody Murdoc. People will laugh, but those who know the real character know he is infinitely more competent.

By the way, I love the added scene in the extended trailer where his van blows up, "Oh no no! This better not be some kind of joke!" His voice kills me, so little kid-ish roller.gif . Here is his toolbox in the trailer:

Aside from the nearly indistinguishable box of diamond matches, I see nothing in that box MacGyver used. It's all thread, safety pins, Q tips, nails, buttons, a tape measure, some strong/band material that I cannot really make out, and chicklets- apparently MacGruber needs to keep that potty mouth smelling fresh whistle.gif , and what appears to be a toilet part in the middle.

Maybe keeping duct tape and a SAK out of the mix is a good thing hmm.bmp

Yeah, I know... Now that my crazy job is over I probably spend more time thinking about SAKs/MacGyver than I should. By the way, I know it just says 2010, but is this looking like a summer movie? Or not until fall/winter?

EDIT: Just found this:

"“MacGruber” is scheduled to hit theaters everywhere starting on April 23, 2010."

He sure did. "The Map" -- that is, the Opening Gambit for "The Gauntlet". A clip showing it was used in the credits for the first few seasons -- Mac whipping through a door and slamming his back against it.

The khaki vest appeared again in the "Pegasus" opening gambit for "The Thief of Budapest", and again in "Trumbo's World". It's basically a fishing vest -- lots of pockets, no collar that I can see, probably a zip closure (although it was never worn closed). They used it to contribute to a kind of 'safari' look.

ohhhh... yeah.. your right.

Now I'm wondering if they specifically choose that vest for it's "MacGyver properties" or if it was just a general outdoors type appearance thing.

Alright, after spotting it (them) in the movie, I found a preview of that portion of the film:

That's right, SAK's laying on the desk- all knockoffs of course, no real Victorinox on a budget like MacGruber's tongue.gif

I have to update this and add that the knife on the right could possibly be a Wenger 65mm or a Victorinox 58mm/74mm keychain knife, the logo is facing down if it is. The other two knives are clearly a 5 layer chinese knockoff (very common) then some large curved tool with a big corkscrew in it
