|I am not going to lie this episode made me tear up a lot I just wow Lucas Till did amazing work and the episode is one of my favorites also love last weeks episodes I plan on going further into depth in a few days after I had a chance to let everything settle|

| I don't even like Oversight, and I still got punched in the feels at the climax.
Side note: When Desi hugged Mac, and Russ came over and touched his shoulder, I thought Russ was gonna join in the pile, and I was so disappointed when he didn't

| This episode was terrific. From the get-go, non-stop action and feels. (Though I wasn't happy about Desi beating up on Mac I don't care if she knows 6 martial arts, I was with Matty on that one. Personally, I don't mind the Mac/Desi relationship, but I know others are vehemently opposed. Maybe this wasn't the best way to get them to like Desi )
Lucas and all the actors were great. The talks between father/son were so difficult and heart-breaking. Obvious Mac harbors a lot of pain from being abandoned that he hadn't resolved. That scene where Mac has to leave his father, so sad and wrenching.
Some great lines, too. The Ted talk, and Mac saying yada yada yada and how he loved his truck, poor baby.
Jeri Ryan is perfect in the role as Gwen. Just the right amounts of brains and sociopathy.
I am confused about the time line, though. When did Mac's mother come up with the idea for file 47? She supposedly died when Mac was 5 yet Matty talked about 14 years ago??? and was she killed by the CIA?

| Actually got to watch this one live (this may become more common), so I'm gonna try something new by re-watching now and live-commenting on the episode:
-What's this? A Phoenix Fight Club? Should I even be talking about this? LOL. I found this weird. What was the point? Since when is Mac a fighter? I get that there has to be self-defense training, but...OK.
-Wait, we're getting Peter Weller, Keith David and Jeri Ryan tonight? Nice.
-Hmm. Oversight and Russ haven't met yet? I mean, wouldn't they have at least connected at some point, given Russ just brought them all back to work, including Oversight?
-The mental conflict Mac is (and will continue to) going through over being the "invaluable asset"...boy, I don't wish that on anyone.
-"She would have been here if she could have." So what are the circumstances regarding Mama MacGyver's death?
-There it is. James is terminal. Well, here we go. Season 4's about to ratchet up.
-Mac and Oversight are off the grid. Hallelujah. Some time without the Deus Ex Machinas. Mac can be MacGyver.
-Desi's the hockey player? OG MacGyver fan in me is not happy about that not being Mac's hockey stick.
-LMAO at the Phoenix team thinking they have more authority than the CIA under "executive branch orders."
-Solves the mine problem, but creates another one with the solution! Now we're on foot. Yes, into the woods we go! Love it.
-Mason! Where'd you come from? How didn't they see him. LOL.
-This File 47 stuff makes my head spin.
-Is this the same cabin from "Hammock + Balcony"?
-Mason and the MacGyvers have been set-up!
-"Maybe we can make something to hold them off." *Mason opens secret door* "That'll work!"
-File 47! The CIA layer to this is...something.
-"This is our house." The Phoenix Foundation bows to no earthly Intelligence Agency, eh?
-I love this redhead (aptly named Scarlet). It might be the nose ring. Hope she's around for awhile.
-Chuck Taylors? New kind of villain here.
-Mac's never used 23andMe, has he?
-Some interesting ideas from Gwen and Codex here. Early on, James mentions sometimes having to "do the wrong thing for the right reason." We have an extreme case of that here with File 47's "societal restart"...at least in their minds.
-"This is...the TED Talk from hell." Mason gives us the line we all wanted to say but couldn't think of. Awesome.
-Hmm...how much can we believe Gwen about Mama MacGyver's involvement with DXS and File 47?
-Sometimes you just need to store barrels upon barrels of flammable liquid in your super secret hideout's garage.
-Mason's redemption arc?
-Interesting assumption by Oversight that Gwen would have mentioned stuff about Mama MacGyver to Mac and that it would be about supposed involvement with File 47.
-James' redemption arc?
-Mason leaves...but the door remains open for a return...but as a hero or villain? Could go either way.
-The team found MacGyver way too easily after he exited the tunnel.
-Uh-oh. Matty keeping secrets from Mac again. Hasn't she learned?
-"I don't need time." "I'll see you tomorrow. Back to work." Oh yes, here we go.
Well, that was a fun one. Not perfect by any means, but strongly acted and really sets up the final stretch of the first half story arc for Season 4, and more than any ep in awhile has me really wishing it was next Friday already.

Yeah, it's probably intentional, but there definitely seems to be some disconnect here with all this.
Is Gwen lying?
Was James lying?
What does one Matilda Weber know?
In any case, it gives us yet another MacGyver family member to be unsure about.

Yep I think she will be around for at least four episodes, The actresses name is Amber Skye Noyes and she is also a talented singer/songwriter

| Great preliminary ratings: http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/the-sked-friday-network-scorecard-4-3-2020.html
Best demo since Episode 3x14 and best audience numbers since 2x15. They never hit above 7 million viewers since then.

| I think the team found them so easy because Codex wanted them to or knew they would communicate via radio so they turned off the jamming, so they could triangulate where the broadcast is coming from via the radio waves, which is why they got found so quickly.
I guess the tough time mentioned before was about Oversight's demise, but it wasn't from cancer (which is debatably a lot quicker way to go)

Oh, I've already done the research.
The Quarantine Effect coupled with the Lead-In for a Popular Series' Finale Effect.
Good episode to have on with all those extra eyeballs on the show. Hopefully some stick around.

I'm not sure about that yet, either. Watching in a language that's not my native one doesn't help, of course
We never knew how Mac's mom died. I think he mentioned once that she was sick. Not sure if they changed the backstory or if she maybe faked her death and continued working for Codex, before she was killed by the CIA?
We might get more info about that since - additional Spoiler Alert - Mac's mom should actually make an appearance in an upcoming episode. 4x10, I think. Could be a dream or coma sequence though. I'm not actually sure yet; it's all very confusing

| It was mentioned in ep 1.02 that MacGyverís mother died in a car accident when he was 5yrs old.
Donít think that was changed by the writers.
Perhaps the car accident was a deliberate act coordinated by the CIA?

I do not remember that it was mentioned.
In the opening of the 2x4 it appears that Mac's mother was ill.
Could she be alive? or it will only be flashback, in the episode that his name appears.

| It was the best episode of the season so far. So many great scenes between Mac and James, Mac and Aunt Gwen, Mac and Mason... Mac's goodbye to his dad was so emotional, i got tears. Kudos to both actors for giving us such strong performances.
4x08 definitely deserves a rewatch. I can't wait to see how the team will deal with Codex.

See, this is why i can't bring myself to like MacDesi. This scene has no point at all. It adds nothing to the story and is only there to show the viewers "Hey look! Aren't they have great sexual chemistry?"... (My personel answer is 'no' btw)
I kinda hate it when a couple is forced like this. MacDesi unfortunately don't feel natural to me at all. And their whole romantic story happening offscreen doesn't help either. I just hope that they break up in good terms, stay friends and move on.

Maybe just a re-creation of the longest foreplay ever that they did in Episode 3x17 (in the frozen seed vault)
Or maybe they finally decided to use Lucas' real life skills - like him speaking German in 4x04. Lucas filmed a movie a year ago, and his character boxes regularly. I know he used to do Jiu Jitsu, but maybe he also had to box for that movie and they thought it's a good idea to use since Levy also is experienced in martial arts? We might never know.
I was rather weirded out by the hockey stick being Desi's since Mac has his own hockey stick. We've seen it in Season 1; leaning against a wall. Like his skis and the surfboard. I think it's all decoration for him anyway

Same here also the same with MacRiley. These two characters have been friends since the beginning and all of sudden Riley develops feelings for Mac, give me a break.

But isn't that a pretty organic and common way for relationships to form?
I'm no expert on relationships...lol, but that would seem a much more natural progression and recipe for success, whereas the other side of the coin (Mac and Desi) is based on adrenaline and the sense of adventure/excitement, and when that wears off, there's very little there as far as true personal connection goes.
|Posted by: Krug 5 April 2020 - 09:05 AM|
True. I had forgotten about that, but there's been so little Mac's house this season, I guess it's no surprise.
It would be nice to see him partaking in some of those activities...even if just as an opener. Would add to character development.
|Posted by: Shy175223 5 April 2020 - 09:10 AM|
In some relationships sure, BUT not in this one. I just don't see it.
|Posted by: luthien 5 April 2020 - 11:49 PM|
Yeah i agree. "Friends to lovers" is a pretty successful recipe when it comes to relationships. Thats why MacRiley is more believable as a potential love story instead of MacDesi. Despite their 1 year long offscreen relationship, what i see on my screen is that Mac and Desi are 2 adults only turned on by adrenaline and when it wears off they just can't find anything common and start to get on each others' nerves. †
To each their own. I personally support it if the writers follow a lowkey romantic direction with MacRiley. But i also love their friendship so much that if they always stay as great friends than its fine too.
The only thing i dont enjoy this season is MacDesi. Other than that Russ is amazing, i'm really enjoying the Codex storyline, im sure now that things are getting serious we will be seeing more Matty...

Agreed, friends to lovers is a good way for a relationship to start BUT it doesn't mean it would be a good thing sometimes for some relationships. To me there has got to be romantic and sexual chemistry between the characters not just friendship. Like I said, I just don't see it. They have a more of a brotherly, sisterly relationship. It just not that believable to me.
