QUOTE (MacGyverGod @ 3 December 2016 - 11:41 PM) | Are they using songs? That's like the biggest turn-off for me. Soundtracks don't interest me, I just want instrumental musical scores. Call Ken, Randy, Dennis or William than. |
One of my major complaints about this reboot is the score.
The soundtrack (meaning the instrumental background pieces, not the songs) really doesn't have any memorable themes so far. In the original show, there were certain music cues that were used for certain types of situations, and that gave the show a lot of its personality. When the reboot was announced, I was very optimistic about the music because even though the music was good in the original, there have been newer shows (Lost, Game Of Thrones, etc) that did an even better job with their music themes, and I had hoped this reboot would do something similar. Instead, we end up with a bunch of generic, highly forgettable music, and it's often used in places that feel completely inappropriate. One thing about this show it wants to keep everything fast paced, as if the director (or editor?) is afraid the audience will walk away if there's a moment of quiet. So, even during exposition scenes, there will often be some sort of synth/techno beat going on in the background. For me, it's distracting and it cheapens the feel of the show.

QUOTE (Miasma @ 5 September 2017 - 09:33 PM) | One thing I really hope they improve in season 2 is the background score.
Clearly he's been doing what they asked him to do, but I just hope they ask him to do something different in Season 2. |
Yes, me too.
I thought it got better towards the end of the season, but since constant background score is the usual MO in modern TV shows, I doubt it will ever get the way I prefer.
Personally, I think it's unfair towards the actors to "drown" them out. Because I think all of the cast is able to pull off emotional and dramatic scenes without having constant music or background action going on.
That's also why I don't like the constant "team scenes" in team shows. You rarely have two actors facing each other without the camera panning onto the faces of others to show their reaction. Personally, I don't need to see the other's reactions because I know they're angry/hurt/devastated about some revelation and feel with the main characters.
"Hawaii Five-0" does a lot of "carversations" between McGarrett and Danno, but they're either in the middle of a car chase or there's music/people/cars in the background that takes your focus away. Also, one of the two is driving and needs to concentrate on the road, so they never really look at each other.
Don't know if you've seen Stargate SG-1 and the Episode "Abyss" of Season 6. It's Daniel and Jack (RDA) in a closed off (and boring) room; having a discussion about a topic they don't agree on. Acting-wise and writing-wise, these are the best scenes of the whole series; showing off their acting chops. There's no need for interesting background or even an overly interesting set. Even the colors are washed out and "boring" in a mutual tone.
Seeing some of their other work, I believe that George Eads and Lucas Till could do stuff like this - if they got the chance.

QUOTE (DashboardOnFire @ 5 April 2020 - 12:37 AM) | QUOTE (Macgyver12186 @ 5 April 2020 - 12:06 AM) | Why can’t I buy the new theme |
to be honest, I have no clue if there's any TV shows themes that are available for purchase...
|
Lost had a few releases. I have music of the first three seasons that contains over 20 tracks of music each.
Xena Warrior Princess: Almost everything was released. Seasons 3 and 5 only contains music from their musical-episodes.
Seasons 1, 2, 4 and 6 contains about 90% of everything that was used. Those seasons contains each over 20 to 30 tracks each. Season 6 even has a double cd.
Season 1 contains 30 tracks, season 2 also contains 30 tracks, season 3 contains 9 tracks only from the musical episode: Bitter Suite. Season 4 contains 31 tracks, season 5 contains 20 tracks, 14 of them are songs from their 100th episode: Lyre, Lyre Hearts On Fire and 6 alternative dance songs. Season 6 disc 1 contains, 23 tracks from the fourth season finale and the fifth season opener and the last season Ring Trilogy and a few more episodes. Disc 2 contains 30 tracks from the series finale and a handful of other episodes.
24: Had some music released.
North and South by Bill Conti: Also one of the most complete releases, I have ever known for a tv-series. The music is released on 7 discs with 6 of them containing music of two episodes each.
What is known as Book I, has I think released everything! These are 4 discs. Disc 1 has 43 tracks, Disc 2 35 tracks, Disc 3 has 30 tracks. Every bit of score that was made for those episode is released. Even music that has been reused multiple times is released. This includes the action theme from the Mexican War "Churubusco Bridge" and the theme that I like to call "the argument theme" when someone goes out of line: "Whoremaster," "Huntoon's assertion" (though only the first few notes) and "Another breach" (my favorite version). "Trip To Harper's Ferry" is however unused in the series.
Disc 4 contains 37 tracks but is nothing more then background music whenever the characters attend parties or receptions.
Book II contains 3 discs. Disc 1 contains 29 tracks, disc 2 contain 42 tracks and disc 3 contains a whopping 54 tracks. These cd's contains about 98% music of Book II. There are two tracks missing if you know the series as detailed as me, but the endings of episode 2 and 4 are missing. Though both tracks are heard in Book I, they end differently. As much as most of the tracks, a lot of the tracks are heard on Book I but are sometimes shorter or end differently. These are mostly themes but there is also a lot of new material. These include jingles and more unused stuff. "Rafe buys the farm" for example is a totally different track then what was used in the series. The series reuses an old track, while it does here but from another track. Also "Bent buys the farm" reuses another track but sped up, while in the series no music was used at all even though it contained a fight sequence and explosions.
When it comes to released music of series: Xena Warrior Princess and North and South are amongst the best to fully release them that I know.

I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver. Sometimes you just have to die a little inside to be reborn and rise again as a stronger and wiser version of you. It's better to be a little sad than to be fake content.
