Thanks!

For the people that have met him, I'd love to hear your stories or see your photos, if you'd be kind enough to share

Posted by: macgyvergal 22 July 2014 - 06:06 PM
I got to meet him in May of 2013 at Dallas Comic Con.

When I found out he was on the guest list, I had a fangirl geek out. happy_dance.gif After which my husband made me promise to not do anything that would get me arrested. biggrin.gif

I managed to get to the autograph line early enough that there was no one else there, so I got to chat for a bit about both MacGyver and Stargate SG-1.

The next day at the photo op, I greeted him in Choctaw (Halito) and he say it sounded lovely. He then put his arm around my shoulder and the picture was taken.

I found him to be a very gracious gentleman and would very much enjoy meeting him again sometime.

Be sure to check out some other threads for pics and feedback that others shared meeting RDA. Especially in our Backstage section. MacG.gif

I've looked. Having trouble finding anything.

Posted by: denizen 23 July 2014 - 04:04 AM
Granted there are a lot of missed opportunities more than actual interventions. I did find these though.

I forgot where I originally posted this, but I met MacG.gif backstage at "The Tonight Show" in 1997, during my college internship for the show "Later . . . With Greg Kinnear". He was promoting the mini series "Pandora's Clock". Even though he wasn't feeling well, he had the flu I think, he was gracious enough to sign a role of duct tape for me. Two pictures of this can be found in the House Boat section, just type in Duct Tape - Signed By RDA. He was really cool, absolutely no hesitation in signing his autograph. I'm sure I'll meet him again some day, hopefully I'll be able to talk with him longer than I did the first time.

Oh - I think you mentioned this in the topic about your jacket.... ummmm... maybe in the wardrobe topic?

Anyway good to have it here as well. It's a great story. biggrin.gif

Posted by: denizen 23 July 2014 - 08:44 PM
Thanks for that, MacFan! smile.gif

Posted by: KiwiTek 24 July 2014 - 01:11 AM
I'll be meeting him later this year.

Trying to think what I should get signed.... I'm thinking probably the cover of the first issue MacGyver comic as it already has Lee Zlotoffs signature on it so having RDA's on it as well might be cool.

Posted by: denizen 24 July 2014 - 01:59 AM
That wont be cool. That will be awesome! biggrin.gif

Posted by: MatGyver 24 July 2014 - 06:39 AM
Thanks. That's awesome, MacFan!

Where did you meet Zlotoff? That's pretty cool.

I'm going to have him sign the promo sheet and the box to my sak. I already have a photo with a signed piece of duct tape on it that I got as a Christmas gift a few years ago.

Hope you get the opportunity soon! I've been waiting for years. I almost traveled great distances and couple times but couldn't afford it. Finally, it happened. The five and a half hour drive wasn't too bad.

I've got my tickets. Now I just have to work out what to get him to sign.

Posted by: MatGyver 1 August 2014 - 05:30 PM
Just wanted to share a little bit about my experience meeting RDA.

Like RDA, I'm also a big hockey fan. I'm from western Pennsylvania and am a Pittsburgh Penguins fan. I decided that I wanted to give him something and went with a hat that Sidney Crosby signed for me. It was pretty cool to talk about hockey with him, even if it was only for a few moments.

Posted by: Joe SAKic 1 August 2014 - 06:20 PM
Well, spill the beans .... what did he say about Crosby, the LA Kings and/or hockey in general????? biggrin.gif hockey.gif

PS: Were you permitted 3 items for autographing?

Well I introduced myself and said first off I'd like to say congratulations to you and the la kings. He got a kick out of that and said thanks.

Oh, and you buy an autograph ticket for each item to b signed. I got a couple. I'm not sure if there is a limit, but the line wasn't very busy at all when I was there. I don't know what it'll be like tomorrow.

Sorry, I hadn't seen this topic before. You're in Baltimore? Lucky you.

Well I went to Duesseldorf in May.There were so many people there waiting for him, he said on Saturday that he had about 700 photos taken (and it wasn't over).
Photo first ,well I look very silly on it with a broad smile cause he grabbed my arm and I landed gently on his chest,shoulder...I couldn't say anything. But it was a very nice experience.

Autograph the next day:I told him I had already bought two autographs from Paul Brown's website and he said people counterfeited his signature,I apologised for my silly babbling(once again it was difficult for me to talk, I was intimidated and after all, I'm French...) and he said 'no,you're doing fine ,just look at you '. He was very encouraging.

Meet & greet to finish:we were in a little room (about 20 people, only one man!) and we talked about his daughter, about the LA Kings because they were playing while he was in Germany, about car racing (Formula 1) about his career...I was sitting next to him ,he pulled my leg a couple of times ,it was fantastic biggrin.gif

Well,I shared but I realise this is a 'very feminine approach',you guys won't understand but I hope the women on this site will.

Posted by: tvero 2 August 2014 - 02:48 AM
Maybe I focused on my 'little person' too much, in a very selfish way...

RDA is a very nice, attentive, funny, lovable man. He makes us feel special (even if we aren't!). It's a great experience and a privilege to meet him.

Thanks Mr Anderson for being who you are.

Posted by: Jediferret 2 August 2014 - 08:14 AM
I do, I do! lol

I know when I get my chance to meet him, I'm gonna have a huge smile plastered on my face for most of the day.

Also, thanks MatGyver. happy.gif RDA is the only celebrity I've actively wanted to meet. I can't wait to meet himself... and hopefully not made a huge fool of myself. lol

I want to meet Corin Nemec and Amanda Tapping too. RDA is on the top of my list though, only because he's been such a big part of my life since I was 5.

But from a female's perspective, I totally get it. I remember when I first started re-watching MacGyver, I was watching an episode on my lunch break. My boss came in and asked what I was doing. I told her I was watching MacGyver. She laughed and said, he's easy on the eyes, isn't he?

There's a 30 year age difference between myself and RDA, so crushing on him is a little weird for me. But I do really respect and admire him. I know I'm gonna love meeting him. I won't deny that there's a little fangirl in me that is going to go "squee!" if I get a hug from him.

RDA at the 2014 Phoenix Comic-con.

Interesting comment in this video where he says StarGate was his second favorite show to make and implies an earlier show he did was his favorite, but doesn't name it hmm.bmp Is he referring to MacGyver or Legend?

I got to meet RDA in May 2013 at Dallas Comic Con. After finding out he was going to be a guest, I had a fan geek moment happy_dance.gif This prompted my husband to ask that i not do anything to get arrested. laugh.gif

I went early on Saturday morning to get my autograph and was extremely lucky. There was no line, so we chatted for a bit about MacGyver and SG-1.

Sunday I had my photo op and greeted him with "Halito", which is Choctaw (my tribe) for hello. He said that sounds lovely, put his arm around my shoulder and we both smiled for the camera.

It was a wonderful experience and I'd do it again in a heartbeat!!!

I've met RDA a few times at an event he participates in every year. He's very nice, a good sport and goes crazy for dogs. I do have lots of pics, but will post just this one since my dog is in it too!

The 'event' you're referring to is Quench the Fire right?(photo with the dog).I thought of going there but it's too far for such a little time spent with him sad.gif .

As for the show he loved Kiwi, it might be Legend because when I was waiting for the autograph, the man in front of me had brought a poster of the show for him to sign. RDA said 'Legend? I lOVED that show ' and he wrote a summary on the photo along with his signature.

In fact he said more than once that he had fun doing Legend and he was sorry that it didn't have the chance to last longer. sad.gif

Of course! I have more videos but am having trouble downloading them on the wifi here at the hotel. It'll be easier once I'm home.

I'm working on the videos from the panel and trying to put all of the clips together into one video. I will post as soon as it's ready. In the meantime, I figured id share this. I picked these up at the show. Got them from Nate of Commissioned Credentials. Great guy.

http://s886.photobucket.com/user/FrancineStantz/media/D931711C-DEAD-4596-836A-ACCF5DF4751C.jpg.html

I got the idea that I wanted a custom one with numbers from a specific episode. I also got the idea of putting a "MacGyver" signature that RDA actually wrote. I was able to crop the "MacGyver" from an autograph RDA signed. Nate was able to put it on the Phoenix card. He did an excellent job. If you're in the market for Phoenix Foundation cards, I recommend him.

http://www.commissionedcredentials.com/

I am in no way affiliated with him. I just wanted to share. If plugging a website isn't allowed I completely understand.

Shore Leave 36. August 2, 2014. At the panel, Richard shared that it was his daughters 16th birthday that day. She insisted he had to attend Shore Leave. Richard asked the audience if they would sing happy birthday to her. He recorded it. We sang twice since his phone screwed up the first time. This was the first. You can really see Richards reaction in this video. Happy birthday, Wylie!

Absolutely, great video! biggrin.gif

And I love those Phoenix cards too!

Posted by: MatGyver 4 August 2014 - 02:12 PM
I have more. About 28 minutes total in video. Do you think I should upload them to YouTube separately or on one 28 minute long video?

From the research I've done I believe the cards have both had "assignment" and "department". I went with assignment since it makes more sense to me.

Posted by: cmbj67 4 August 2014 - 10:25 PM
Good idea for the cards. thumbup.gif

Maybe one video of 28 minutes would be better, but if it's more complicated for you all separate are fine, do it as you prefer. I can't wait to see them. biggrin.gif

Here's the video of the q&a that took place on Saturday. I took all of the clips and put them together into one video.

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 24 October 2014 - 01:47 AM
This is my story of meeting RDA Today.

Sitting in the hotel lobby I was met by Paul Brown (RDA's media representative) and the Armageddon Expo Media Co-ordinator. After a brief chat we all boarded the elevator and headed up to where the interview was being done.

As we exited the elevator and headed down the corridor RDA suddenly appeared out of a side door holding an empty cup of coffee, walked ahead of us and said hello as he swiped the door open with his security card and held it open for us all to walk through. It was at that moment that my first surreal moment hit me - MacGyver had just swipe-accessed a door and was holding it open for me! It was almost like watching an episode from the inside.

As he continued into the room he joked to one of the hotel staff while gesturing with the empty coffee cup, "I told you I'd bring it back." All the while my surreal moment continues as I can't quite wrap my head around having MacGyver standing in front of me.

From there I was taken into where we would do the interview. I spent a few minutes chatting to Paul about various things, including Sea Shepard and some plans for upcoming MacGyver auctions, then he went out to get RDA while I got myself set up.

After a couple of more minutes I heard the door open and that unmistakable voice say "Where is he?" I looked up in time to see Richard walk around the corner holding a new cup of coffee with Paul in tow.

I begin to stand up as he approached but he motioned with his free hand and said "no stay seated."

A quick introduction from Paul "Peter, Richard - Richard, Peter." we shock hands and he plonked himself down into the soft leather 2 seater sofa sitting at a right angle to the one I was on. And there I was sitting 1 meter away from MacGyver and it felt normal, like he was an old friend that had popped around for a chat, yet at the same time I'M CHATTING WITH MACGYVER!!

We start of with me stammering along yabbering about how big of a fan I was and then somehow moved onto family matters and suddenly we're sharing stories about being parents and kids dating; at which point I released the camera wasn't turned on (I used a digital camera to sound record). I point out that the camera's not on to which comes the response "Why not??"

I turn the camera on and set the record going and RDA leans in to look at the camera, "What model's that?" he asks.

"ummmm.... it's a Canon... something?" I respond hesitantly, adding "It's my son's."

"Oh" replies RDA as he picks it up to look for the model number (I tell my son later in the day that his camera now has special powers because MacGyver has fiddled with it), "1100 D" he confirms and then mentions that there are 2 models of the 1100 series.

"He's into photography" I think to myself.

So then I start with my first question and the interview flows along with a combination of predetermined and off the cuff questions in a very relaxed chatty manor. So relaxed in fact that RDA ended up stretched on the sofa looking like he was ready to nod off. He commented that his back was playing up and apologized for moving around. I wasn't about to complain. I'm sitting chatting to Richard Dean Anderson about MacGyver and he seems happy to do so - You can move around as much as you need to sir! laugh.gif

Before I knew it Paul was back giving me the 5 minute warning to start wrapping things up and it was at this stage that I realized I'd been drawn into having a conversation with him instead of interviewing him and many of the questions I had on my list remained unanswered. RDA had been giving such great involved responses to the few questions I had asked that our half hour was nearly gone.

A couple of more questions and Paul gives us the "time to wrap it up guys"

One final question about what drew him to become involved with the Sea Sheppard Society and we're done.

RDA comments with a laugh that another 5 minutes of laying there and he would have dozed off.

In all honesty it felt like we could have sat chatting away about all kinds of things for hours. He seems to have a great talent for just connecting with people in a completely authentic and down to earth way. But alas my time was up and Richard was now sitting upright and fully awake again. laugh.gif

I ask him if he would mind doing a photo with my sign, to which he was more than happy to oblige - a slight hick up with the camera and finally the photo is taken.

"check it!" he says as he comes around behind me and leans in over my shoulder to check the photo for himself. "Nicely done." he says with a pat on my back.

A quick hand shake to both RDA and Paul and they leave. And I'm left with an awesome memory of the day I had coffee with MacGyver!

Excellent. You set the tempo and atmosphere with the camera being off initially .... as opposed to the more stuffy, stiff - lights, camera, action! Humans can sense this and react(relax or not) accordingly!

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 24 October 2014 - 02:30 AM
I wanted to do him the courtesy of letting him know when he was and wasn't being recorded.

I noticed he glanced at the camera a couple of times when he first started talking - maybe wondering if it was recording? maybe just wondering what brand it was. laugh.gif

Wow, that's an amazing experience!

The fact that he comes off as so easy to approach and talk to is the reason I want to meet him. I'm not big on meeting celebrities just because I'm painfully shy and tend to get stupid when I'm nervous... more so then usual. lol

But, it's still very awesome that you got to sit down and have coffee with him. happy.gif

Yes, it's Quench the Fire. The event is FREE if you don't run. I'm not encouraging that and I have PAID to volunteer and not run, roll or otherwise trek the course. I just take pics. After the race he signs pics and stuff and always lights up at the Legend memorabilia. And dogs.

Hi everyone

I'm just back from the LFCC in London and am feeling really excited, as I finally got to meet RDA yesterday! If I'm honest, the con itself was a bit of a mess, and I was never in any chance of getting an autograph, but I did see the 45 min stage talk from pretty good seats, (sad to say I chickened out of asking anything) and I did get to meet Richard for my photo op, and even exchanged a few words there!

Richard is exactly as I imagined him, funny, appreciative of his fans, and very committed to the causes he supports. I can go on and on about the stuff he talked about, but you probably don't want to hear me waffle. The moustache has gone from the previous pic in this thread though. tongue.gif

And my photo shoot, which would look sooo much better if you cut me off! wink.gif I was going to wear an SG1 jacket I have, but it was boiling in there, and RDA had to change his top at least three times, so I opted for something cooler! I think if you click on the pics, you can access my whole photobucket and see all the pics I took. Some are blurry, as I didn't use flash. It can't be nice to keep getting flashed in the face, and the con staff didn't seem to be stopping people!

He's just so nice, you can't believe it! I spoke to him, he spoke back, but I can't recall any of it as I'd turned to mush by that point. He's one of those people you expect to be like the character he plays. Actors rarely are quite that, but RDA really is. If he ever comes back to these shores I'm off again to see him for sure!

Finally, after almost 7 years... I'm finally gonna get to meet RDA!!! I just purchased my tickets for the convention and photo op. I was gonna do a autograph, but I'd rather just do the photo op.

Though, I've NEVER been to a convention before, or met any kind of celebrity. Any advice? It's two months away still and I'm already nervous as hell. unsure.gif

That's awesome. smile.gif

Just remember everyone there is interested in the same stuff as you and RDA is really friendly.

The photo ops are really quick because of the hundreds of people he has to get through. You basically walk up to him say "Hi" take the photo and walk off. But be ready for a long wait. You'll stand in an "Airport line" for an hour or so slowly zig zagging your way closer to him before that moment arrives .

My biggest advice is....

Be aware of the moment. As you get 4 -5 people away from your turn you'll be able to see him and watch the others having their photos done... Take a moment to absorb it all... That's really him standing there.... Richard Dean Anderson... MacGyver.. Jack O'Neill and your about to have your photo taken with him.... enjoy it and stay focused on it so you'll have a lasting memory every time you look at the photo.

I've read plenty of regretful comments of people freaking out and not being able to enjoy their moment with him, so try not to let that happen when it's your turn.

I'd also advice not to speak once your looking at the camera, just smile. My photo was ruined because I was saying something as the camera clicked and my mouth is in a weird position and looks stupid. So just smile until the photo is done. wink.gif

Very happy for you , Jedi ! Ask for a hug . He never says no to a lady wink.gif

Posted by: MacGyverGod 23 May 2019 - 06:35 AM
Jedi, take my word for it! Go for both the autograph and the picture! You won't regret it!

When I met him three years ago, I also stood in line for like two hours just to get the autograph. When you go for the autograph, you can actually talk to him and he will take his time to speak with you. I still remember that moment when our eyes connected when he was sipping his bottle and suddenly the infamous lights behind the eyes lit up and he looked at me as if he hadn't seen me in years while we never met. But that moment that we connected, I felt his energy and that's why he is MacGyver.

Also when I went for the picture later, I remember we took our positions and suddenly he placed his arms around my shoulders as if it was the most normal thing in the world and it felt so good. I have some dark years behind me, but those moments really lit everything up in an otherwise dark period in my life. I agree with MacGyverOnline: be aware of the moment. The photoshoots really are like: *snap* Next. *snap* Next.

That's also why I strongly recommend of getting an autograph because then you really have one on one contact with him. He's so smooth and everything they ever said about him in MacGyver is simply true. He's like this huge teddy bear.

It's worth the wait and you won't regret it ever.

I'll probably go ahead and get the autograph ticket then, and try to think of something for him to sign. Maybe my FunkoPop? Hmmmm... decisions. lol

Fantastic news Jedi. Definitely get an autograph if you can, he's just so down to earth and easy to talk to. Got to meet him last month at Wales comic con and even got a hug 😄One of the best weekends of my life despite the weather. But the feeling will stay with you forever. happy_dance.gif

You should be able to get your photo before the signing session, so you can get that signed by him if you wanted to.

He wont sign SAKs, clothing or Duct tape simply because it's too hard to write on, but most other things should be ok.
They also have a selection of RDA photos you can choose from.

One of your dvd boxes perhaps. I had him sign the tv-movies. Just so you know, he'll probably only sign with his full name.

Let me revive this . I don't know which con you'll attend , Jedi ,there are three this month (he's a very busy man !) but if you have an autograph ticket it's the best way to speak to him ... make the most of it !

I am BACK! lol

Fanboy Expo was amazing! Overwhelming, but amazing!

I didn't get to do the autograph like I wanted to, but it ended up working out because we really didn't have time. We left right after to drive up to Minnesota. Still, the photo op was just as amazing.

While waiting in line, I was nervous as hell and a lot of nice folks in line talked to us. I was a bit scatterbrained because I was so nervous. My friends went up with me, which I had asked because I think for the first time I was far too nervous to go up on my own. There was an awesome MacGyver cosplayer as well, that I wish I had the guts to ask for a photo with. He looked familiar though, and I think he goes to conventions

But they did move us in and out like cattle, except when it was our turn. We got stopped just as we were about to go up because Paul Reubens (Peewee Herman) wanted to a photo with RDA. So he kinda held us up... which the staff apologized for. However, it was fine because it gave me time to calm down. Though Paul Reubens kept looking over at us, I found out later my friend Shayla was freaking out behind me. lol

When it became our turn, we got our pic taken and RDA thanked us. Paul Brown was also there and thanked us as we left.

I did notice something interesting in the picture was of Shayla's friend, Dennis. I had just met Dennis the day earlier, as he helped her drive down and was helping her drive us back to Minnesota. It worked out that he could go up with us in the photo shoot. Like myself, he never met a celebrity before, but didn't really know who RDA was. But RDA, being his sweet self, tried his best to include ALL of us, and had his hand on Dennis' shoulder. I showed it later to Dennis, and he was grinning ear to ear. We all were, actually.

Anyway, here below is the pic of us with RDA. In the pic, my sister Terri and myself on the left and my friend Shayla and her friend Dennis on the right. smile.gif

That's why he's the man!

Ever since I got to meet him, I realize it's no longer that impossible to meet actors or stars thanks to the cons. Even missing out is no tragedy either. There's always no matter how small a chance they might come somewhere near you or if you're that passionate you might take the time to go to wherever they are.

He was very nice. I got to talk to him at the autograph session, the Q&A, and the photo opportunity. He did confirm that he still has the original Chevignon leather jacket from the early seasons of MacGyver and that the leather had shrunk so he can't really fit into it, anymore. It was a pleasure finally meeting him in person.

It was so cool! GalaxyCon was the first convention thing I'd ever gone to. And the only reason I knew about it was because back when Jedi first posted about going to the convention, I went and looked to see where it was going to be and saw that the one from July 25-28 was close enough for me to make it there. Thanks Jedi!

When he was at his booth signing things, I went thru the line with my family even though we didn't buy an autograph ticket. We bought a Stargate thing so the lady let us talk to him and he was so nice and he shook our hands and talked with us for a few minutes! I wanted to burst with happiness! (This is probably weird, but I was so happy because he sounded just the same and looked the same just a bit older. )And then later we had bought a photo op so we got our picture taken with him and he remembered us from earlier! We were joking that my life is complete now lol

I think I like conventions...

Thanks for listening to my late night rambles about stuff that makes me super excited
