Every week I will be posting a new topic titled "Episode Discussion". In this we will discuss an episode, what we liked about it, what we didn't like, etc.

Episode 40 - Partners

On the 7th anniversary of their mutual meeting, MacGyver and Thornton are lured into a trap by a master-of-disguise hit man they both thought long dead.

(This account of Mac & Pete's first meeting conflicts with the story presented in "Deathlock.")
First appearance of arch-nemesis Murdoc.

This was an excellent episode. Perhaps even a first MacGyver classic. Good episode to find out how they met each other no matter what was said in Deathlock. They become "Partners". Aww. Murdoc was great for his first episode.

lots of good stuff in this ep. mac's facial expression when pete tells him about the bomb under jack's bed, then subsequently saves his life by pulling him off; jack dalton laid up in the hospital and mac trying to explain about the cab - and what about getting out of the cab! and not to be forgotten . . . murdoc in a dress.

QUOTE (MacGyver @ May 24 2005, 04:15 am)

This has to be one of my most favorite MacGyver episodes! I've seen it quite a few times! smile.gif The first appearance of Murdoc- the first meeting of Pete and MacGyver (and the conflict between this version and the story mentioned in "Deathlock"- still haven't totally figured that out)
The great MacGyverism at the end- escaping from the truck- "Acid Rain". "No, Dynamite Stable. Usually."

And the parts with Jack Dalton were hilariously great, of course. "He blew up my bed?" "MacGyver, I'm in a bed right now!" ( I love that part)

And a great quote from Jack about Mac - "He's got honesty the way some people have diseases- incurable!" "Yeah, he does." - Pete

Or another line from Pete about MacGyver- "MacGyver, you are a do-gooder. 90% of the people in the world are smart. They see trouble and they run away. 10% are like you- can't resist cleaning up the mess."

Yes, definitely another favorite episode- and one of my top favorites because it's a "Murdoc" episode!!!

You still don't know? It's pretty obvious.. smile.gif Mac and Pete lie to people of how they first met. They don't want people knowing that the first time they met is with Murdoc.. smile.gif who wants to admit that? I wouldn't ROFL.

QUOTE (MacGirl @ May 27 2005, 10:48 am)

This one was just funny! Lots of humor: Murdoc in a dress (have to wonder how Michael des Barres felt about that... bet he loved it!), Jack in two leg casts... oh, wow, now I'm laughing just thinking about it!! Jack was always great for comic relief.

And yeah, I think Mac and Pete were both kind of embarrassed to admit that if it weren't for a bad guy, they never would have met. Can't say I blame them.

QUOTE (Lee Nole-Isil @ Nov 14 2005, 01:19 am)

I love this ep!!!!!! Jules and I were watching it one night and we were giggling like maniacs! This ep is guaranteed to bring a smile to anybody's face!

QUOTE (Amy @ Nov 14 2005, 08:33 am)

Ack! How did I miss commenting on this one! It's definitly one of my favorites--for all the reasons already said! I love Jack, Mac and Pete together--add Murdoc and even better! LOL--so many great funny scenes! Excellent ep!

You betcha!

I liked it all. I love how all four characters are in the same episode.

Very cool !!!

Ah, yes. They are an excellent combination! happy.gif

QUOTE (Sjaop @ Feb 3 2006, 08:09 am)

I loved it, even though I voted it good, not excellent.

It's clearly the very first episode with Murdoc in it and I think the way they've created a story around it is a bit " easy" (I know it's not easy to wrote a script, but I hope you know what I mean)

By the way, how on earth did Murdoc find out

I'm not really sure MacsChick... sad.gif

I never heard this laugh of his before. Or maybe I never noticed.

But this 2 seconds of laughter come right after Pete says -while helping making the bomb-
"Two pro's with bazooka's that bit the dust"
and that makes Mac laugh. biggrin.gif

Hihihi, it's so cute. Can't help it... love.jpg

Another great moment is when Mac tells Pete to hang on to Murdoc's spare pantyhose. Pete says "They're not my size." roller.gif

Jack in the hospital trying to get as much money out of Pete for the price of the cab---very funny. "He's got honesty the way some people have diseases, incurable!" Jack--talking to Pete about Mac. Very funny, and very true.

Just the thought of Murdoc (Michael Des Barres) getting into the pantyhose is enough to make you laugh until your sides split. roller.gif

It's possible that Mac and Pete lie about how they met because of security concerns. Don't forget, they were government agents at the time (well, at least Pete was, and Mac became one later) and in the real world, CIA agents (for example) can't talk about their work to anyone outside the agency. Maybe chasing Murdoc was a top-secret thing, so they COULDN'T tell anyone how they really met, especially considering the case was still open.

Yep.

If a country has the DVD set they should also have access to online viewing.

It makes no sense at all that I can watch MacGyver on DVD, but I can't watch it on their stupid site. dry.gif

I just reviewed this episode and it seemed less good than I remembered..
It does not seem plausible that, for example, a professional and meticulous killer like Murdoc did not have a car ready to run away from hospital!!
Mac is chasing him and what he do? He he enters in a building in demolition hmm.bmp

And when Mac is setting on the bed with the bomb under it?
Eh was member in a bomb squad in Vietnam as told in the episode "countdown", and Mac should be the expert bomb, not Pete!
Mac Gyver should already know what to do, not Pete again! headbutt.gif

Great performance , instead, by Michael des Barres!

For me it is a good episode, but not excellent!

Days ago I saw again this episode:
I'm not an expert in American cars but I noted, in the flashback of the 1980, that the cars do not look like models of that year!! hmm.bmp

Is it true? blink.gif

This episode is a true MacGyver classic, I'd say. I really, really liked it, from beginning to end!

First we have the premise, a great set up for an adventure; both Mac and Pete being set up for what they think will be a seven anniversary celebration of their friendship and partnership. Then, as even Mac and Pete points out, there are the details with the same kind of cab and all that...

The "flashback" scenes (I use quotation marks since I don't consider this to be a flashback episode; this is never before seen material) are very well made, save for some details like the cars, as Cirubit pointed out, and the fact that MacGyver looks just the same seven years prior to the current day.

Pete's hair piece is hysterical. I *almost* expected Mac to use it for a MacGyverism... but hehe, that *might* have been a little too much.

Mac's face when he realizes he's sitting on top of a bomb is also... priceless! laugh.gif

The Jack Dalton scenes at the hospital, as he also broke his arm, going after Mac, might be a little over the top for my taste, but I did laugh anyway.

But--this is also the first episode with Murdoc! To be honest, I don't find the Murdoc character nearly as creepy as villains like Piedra from "The Assassin." He's a little too extrovert for my taste, I think. But--Des Barres is an excellent actor, which he definitely proves here. The nurse seemed a little suspicious from the start--especially knowing about Murdoc's earlier disguise--but "Sarah" was totally plausible.

A definite "excellent" from me. smile.gif

I think your confusing flashback scenes with clip-shows.

Flashback refers to showing a characters memory (as they did in this episode) and a clip show refers to an episode of which the majority of footage is taken from previous episodes.

This episode definitely wasn't a clip show, but I suppose it could be called a Flashback episode as it had quite a lot of flashback scenes in it.

Sorry, well, it's just a language thing--to make a long story short, English isn't my mother tongue but we borrow a lot of words from the English language, especially when discussing things related to American culture. "Flashback" (episodes) is used a lot, both intending what is obviously referred to as "clip shows" but naturally even in the sense of the word. "Clip shows" might be the correct English term, but I'm not used to using (haha) that expression. If I say "clip shows" over here, few would understand what I mean. tongue.gif
Sorry about the confusion!

While we're on the subject--here's a fun fact: In England, they don't use "seasons," they call it "series" throughout. So, for example, "MacGyver season 2" would be "MacGyver SERIES 2." There are many local varieties, I guess...

A great MacGyver episode. I really liked it from beginning to end. The premise is very well written. The flashback scenes are very well shot. Even though this is the first episode will Murdoc he doesn't really come off as menacing, like Piedra from The Assassin, he comes off more a little scary, and somewhat funny. And Mac's face when he realizes he's sitting on top of the bomb is priceless. laugh.gif A "Excellent" episode in my opinion.

I really like where Pete and Mac are in the truck and Pete says "You know what I'm thinking of? A pair of shoe strings, a paper clip, and a wrench." Mac giggles, and Pete says "So, you see I have a little confidence here". RDA's giggles or laughter are too few and far between in the series, but perhaps that is what makes it so special when it does show through...in my opinion. blush.gif

My second favourite episode. Almost too funny! Murdoc dressing up as a woman twice. roller.gif The hospital scenes are the best part. Poor Jack! happy.gif I wonder what took Murdoc so long before he tried to take revenge. Seven years, that's patience. Why didn't he hear what Mac and Pete were planning in the semi trailer?

"Definitely Murdoc's handiwork. I could fix it if I only had some duct tape." -Murdoc (impersonating MacGyver), "Strictly Business"

Just the thought of Murdoc (Michael Des Barres) getting into the pantyhose is enough to make you laugh until your sides split.
