When Janet comes out of her boyfriends room to inform mac and professor ryman that david has barricaded himself in the lab, you do not see the garage door opener at all. I don't think David in his suicidal state would of went back to his room and removed the garage door opener from the dresser it was bolted to.
Also the guy that cheats, his door doesn't have his time lock bolted to it the day before the competition when he eavesdrops on david and janet. Looking at the door, you would have to guess that set up would take a good bit of time to install. Doubt he would be able to install it the day of the competition.
 Now technically I'm driving a stolen car following a kidnapping... and I didn't even get to have my first cup of coffee. (Mac)
