Wow, another good one and yes, they went dark. More my kind of episode and an obvious nod to Saw and Partners and a little bit of Cleo Rocks: the villain watching his victims on a monitor.
First I like to point out the changes that were done in this episode.
It was nice to see Mac and Jack on a little time off. Interesting to see them go to Vegas. So this Mac gambles? I guess we're coming closer to our version of Mac. Going somewhere and ending up in an adventure. But that we were really going into Saw-territory, I did not expect. Though I always wondered how our Mac would do if he ends up in a Saw movie.
The B-story line with Riley, Leanna and Bozer... Well, I'd go with Riley on a mission any day, Leanna and Bozer... though I still hope it would work out, I'm afraid they're going to remain an obstackle in liking them. Bozer is not a spy, period and despite Leanna's skills: she might know how to fight and how to hold a gun in a cool way but that's it, there's nothing more to it. I would even think that if done properly Jill would've done well in the field.
Ever since this episode though, I got to say if they keep the pacing the way it is now as in the past few episodes, I don't think I would mind a secondary storyline so much. Before that it was like the A-storyline ran on speed but the B-storyline without Mac had to run on speed too. That's what made it less enjoyable.
What I also liked more is that they were not in contact with Matty in the War Room. Even though it gave her only one scene in the entire episode. I was glad they had to rely more on each other then on someone barking orders in their ears.
And this brings us back to Mac and Jack who also only had to rely on each other, which I think was very cool. Finally they're cut off from back up and they only had each other.
Seriously, that ending had me going. I was like Mac fired by accident or Jack didn't got out of the way in time and now he's hurt and dying, pleading for Mac to end it by shooting him?! The moment he actually shot him, I was like: "No way!" Did they really went that far? And to be honest, I was hoping they did (because I don't think there is a bigger challenge then going against everything you stand for and this could've finally been the reason why reboot-Mac would dislike guns because he had to shoot his best friend. And maybe from this moment on, he could've start making points about guns on their missions) and then suddenly, boom there is a twist where everything is explained. Of course Mac would not shoot to kill (RDA refused to shoot the rhino) and I was already figured at one point: why not take the gunpowder out of the bullet to make a blank?
We are definitely going darker and I like it because if you go dark, you can do things, you otherwise can't.
I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver. Sometimes you just have to die a little inside to be reborn and rise again as a stronger and wiser version of you. It's better to be a little sad than to be fake content.
