Yeah, I agree about Brian Blessed. He definitely brought the movie down several notches.
On a separate topic, it's interesting to note the similarities between this movie and the latest Indiana Jones movie: 1. "Knowledge is the treasure" (when I heard that in Indiana Jones, I immediately thought of this.) 2. The magentic properties of the ark in LTOA, and the magnetic properties of the skull in KOTCS. 3. Both Mac and Indy get betrayed by their old friends.
I noticed some others when I watched it, but my mind is blank right now.

QUOTE (MacGyver @ 7 May 2007 - 03:05 PM)
I thought "MacGyver: Lost Treasure of Atlantis" was an excellent return for MacGyver. I remember watching MacGyver all the way through from 1985 onward- and I was quite thrilled to see him return for these TV-movies in 1994. This one is a great treasure hunt type adventure, with him searching for Atlantis with his old Professor Atticus. There's a bit of an Indiana Jones feel, but of course, MacGyver gets things done with his own style. (And that's cool with me- I love Indiana Jones too! ...Indiana Jones IV- May 22, 2008! - Can't wait!!!) Atticus was a lot of fun probably because he reminded me a bit of Jack Dalton- both had a bad habit of not telling MacGyver everything upfront and getting him into trouble! And MacGyver travels around a good bit in this one, so there's an international feel going on. I thought it was great that MacGyver also manages to stop a country involved in "ethnic cleansing" (aka murder) while escaping from them. He always gets the job done! The MacGyverisms are incredible in this one. Escaping from an electrically charged floor, the classic distraction with the candle in the armor, the stalactite to cut the ropes- and of course tying rockets onto a car with on engine to make it go! That was awesome! And the Swiss Army Knife gets some use in this one, as it's very helpful in discovering a secret about the Ark of Solon. And of course, MacGyver uses it to start an airplane!!! And the final escape from the volcano with the pulley system was cool too. It all came off like a good two-part MacGyver episode- like "Legend of the Holy Rose", which would be most appropriate. I think both TV-movies were a good guide for what a theatrical movie could or should have looked like. I loved this TV-movie and I particularly loved the final message at the end. The treasure of Atlantis was of course, knowledge! And knowledge truly is more valuable than the worldly riches the bad guys were wanting. "Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her." (Proverbs 3:13-15) There are also some great quotes from this TV-movie I really like.
"If I taught you anything in university, it's that the search for truth is never easy, MacGyver."- Professor Atticus
"I was at the end of my rope. Oh please understand, I mean- you were the only person I could turn to."- Atticus "Story of my life."- MacGyver
"You sure this will work?"- Atticus "Nope."- MacGyver "Good, that's the MacGyver I know."- Atticus
Very wise words indeed.
I loved the both MacGyver movies.
"I guess the way you look at the world depends on where you are. From up here it looked like a pretty nice place."
"When I was a kid, my grandfather used to say to me that ... a fellow's life wasn't worth mentioning if he hadn't shared it with some folks along the way."

Are both the MacGyver movies available to purchase online? I assume they may be on Amazon, but I need a DVD that is Region 4, to be compatible with my DVD player...

Depends what you mean by online. The DVD's can be purchased from our store here on the site, but I don't believe they are available in a downloadable format.
Your other option might be to unlock your DVD player's zone setting so it will play all regions. You can find how to do that with a simple google search along the lines of "unlock dvd player region settings [player model]" or something similar. If your using a DVR, it may well be already unlocked.

Now for the trained ears there's also something similar in the music used during the scenes.
There's this little cue when Kelly hits Cleeve with the ark in the stomach. Just listen to it. If you listen good and you know the music of Raiders of the Lost Ark you can recognise similar tones with the scene in LTOA and the track The Basket Game from Raiders of the Lost Ark.
There's also something alike in Good Knight MacGyver when they're hanging over the lavapit. When they see Duncan's skeleton and Mac starts breathing heavy, you hear a bit percussion right before the frame freezes over. In the track Desert Chase of Raider of the Lost Ark there is a similar percussion in it. Really try to pay attention to it.

Yeah, I want the actual DVD's. I don't download movies at all. I used to know the code to unlock the zone setting, I forget what it is now. Hopefully I can do it though - the DVD's aren't even on ebay so either they are popular or there just aren't that many of them.

So, I decided to re-watch this one since it's been a while. I love the interaction between Mac and Atticus... especially when Mac is annoyed. lol
I LOVE Kelly. XD Especially the whole scene with the plane and the key. I love how Mac always seems to use his SAK as a key for EVERYTHING. Is that even possible? O_o
I will admit, I was a bit worried these movies weren't going to be that good, but I enjoyed both of them a lot. They both had a different feel and I just loved the humor in this one.

I really enjoyed this one. Despite it's cheesiness, it's just a brains off and enjoy what they offer.
Kelly indeed seems like a nice and pretty girl. I just love it when she's reading the arc in the museum. There's a nice shot where she looks up to her grandfather while she's reading.

This film deserves a standing ovation . The Stringer should have been done on this scale to provide a fitting end to the series, I think.
I really like Mac doing something different, with new people - it gives the film an air of 'what Mac does on his day off' that I thought worked well.
Brian Blessed was at his exuberant best and was a good foil for Mac to play off, Kelly was great (and charmingly starstruck by Mac, who's rocking the same haircut I had circa 1989) and the bad guys were reassuringly cheesy. And extra-crispy, in one case
There were some good MacGyverisms here - the steampunk computer rocks my world and the geothermal winch was great.
I haven't had to wait the two years between The Stringer and this film but if I had, I'd have been well pleased by this return to MacGyver's world. It's a fun place to be

QUOTE (elavia @ 21 April 2009 - 11:19 AM)
The conjunction of the planets is ridiculous... Even children knows that planets dont shows in that way...like spheres in the sky. The planets are like stars with naked eyes; the scripters must be know this. Maybe the movie is for children...
My reaction as well. Didn't mind the rather silly storyline or the unlikelihood of how easily they could poke around archaeological sites, not to mention a professor getting his tenure revoked just because someone else didn't like his idea (that's exactly what tenure prevents!) - that's all in good fun, and it's part and parcel of the show. But the view of the planets was just ridiculous.
I also found it rather unsatisfying how they never explained how Mac got them out of the chamber at the beginning of the movie. If they weren't going to show it, they could at least have it explained.
That aside, the MacGyverisms we do see are brilliant. As far as that goes, it does deliver. So I rated it Good.
They've got guns. All I have is orange juice and a rope...
How did Cleeve get to Thera before MacGyver and friends? Did the Cleeve dude master teleportation, if thats the case, why didnt he just teleport inside the cave or just rob banks with the teleportation system?

If you're talking about Kelly's grandfather being hurt, maybe there is an unknown person Cleeve paid off to take care of Simon when he and Zavros were on the way. This would mean a setback for MacGyver, Kelly and Atticus so they didn't waste any time and got ahead in the volcano. And as for Cleeve being a student of Atticus he must have known about the Tower of Fear. So I wouldn't think it's all that odd that Cleeve gained in on them. Knowing they couldn't get past the flames before MacGyver came Cleeve waited for him when Zavros couldn't hold himself and tried his way through the flames.
Still it's pretty unclear if their arrival in Greece is the day after they escape Cleeve's estate or if it's the same day. I don't know how long a flight from England to Greece takes. 3 or 4 hours? Maybe 4,5?

The one thing I really didn't like was Atticus. I liked him at first, as he reminded me so much of Jack Dalton, but he started getting on my nerves after 20 minutes or so.
Ditto! He's a nattering nutcase. Shut up already!

I can't review it yet .... because I've fallen into a deep sleep each of the three times that I attempted to watch it. Not happy with this ongoing Indiana Jones attempt though .... RDA makes a great MacGyver but is a poor man's Indiana, for sure. And who's decision was it to cast such a babbling idiot as a sidekick?

Ask John Sheppard. He wrote it. And as far as I know Brian Blessed is a well known British actor. At least in England. There, I think he did almost everything possible. Plays, shows, (tv) movies.

Just watched this last night, and Brian Blessed is ALWAYS like that. He babbles like that in reality too!
I think he kinda spoiled this movie a bit for me, though, Brit or not!
My favorite parts are at the start, with the Balkan prison escape using the chair balancing etc. Then it got a bit hokey. Still very nice to have another Mac to watch over again, though.
I missed the opening theme It seemed strange without it, although I know they were going for more of a movie look.
Mac suffered fools a bit too lightly for my liking and there were no shortage of these characters throughout the series. Fitting that this episode was of the final nails in the coffin. That sort of slapstick / comedy angle has it's place in moderation but ... so very easy to overcook/overuse. I think it more undermined rather than accentuated his character in many episode situations.

I couldn't get through Honest Abe, Deadly Silents, The Lost Amadeus + a few others. The Lost Amadeus had the makings of something really good .... but they 'had' to go with yet another ditz in the female role. Should have made her sophisticated, a love interest lure for Mac, and then take away all the slapstick towards the end. Agreed that the absence of the series theme music/score really got this flick off on the wrong foot .... & downhill from there.

MacGirl, I so agree with you on Atticus. That Brian Blessed guy has 'LOOK AT ME! I'M AN ACTOR!' written all over him. Every time he opens his mouth his voice makes me cringe. I do wish there would be a way to erase BB from the movie and replace him with a not so dominant being. With today's technology it shouldn't be a problem. But it would probably be too expensive.
So the presence of BB takes away a lot of the pleasure of watching this movie, at least for me. Still, when I manage to look around the Big Bad Actor I see a lot of good stuff. It's a nice adventure, and I like the MacGyverisms. But I like Trail to Doomsday a whole lot better.
That's just Brian Blessed being Brian Blessed. He also climbs mountains. I'm sure he and RDA had a lot to talk about between takes.
