He didn't exactly have a mullet, but the medium-length hair was probably meant to be an approximation since a legitimate mullet would be hard to explain on a modern 20-something who isn't a redneck and would be more aesthetically palatable to modern audiences.

I agree with Widowmaker that the mullet was a fashion statement of the time and would just be hokey now. Especially on the blond kid!
