Cape Town’s up-and-coming indie rock band may have a familiar feel for fans of the MacGyver show. Not only is the band called MacGyver Knife, but their title has a famous MacGyver Swiss Army Knife forming the letter K in their name.

Band frontman Mishal Pandie says they grew up watching MacGyver on TV and within their community the Swiss Army Knives are more commonly know as MacGyver knives. He says the bands name came from a combination of the knives nick-name and the fact that they regularly had to fix up their battered drum kit “MacGyver style”.

The bands music also has a familiar feel to it with such influences listed on their myspace page as radiohead, oasis, smashing pumpkins, led zeppelin, the who, the Beatles, the killers, plus many others.

You can see their first video http://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=160514065440&oid=4878782909

Did you seek for any permission before naming this website, Rocky? hmm.bmp

I think a person needs not ask permission to make a fan website, it goes to when people are makeing money off of something that is already copyrighted. ^^

Nope

It's a persons name and can't be copyrighted.

What can be copyrighted is the character created by Paramount and the trademark title of the show along with all the elements which make up the show (pictures sounds etc)

You don't need permission to make a website about the show, but you can't use the copyrighted material of the show without permission.
Although in most cases having pictures etc on a fan site (I believe) would fall under the reasonable use clause, as long as there's no profit being made from the use of the elements. Thats why this site is non-profit.... much to my despair.

But as far as the band goes, they would only have a problem if they used the trademark MacGyver logo or maybe spelt it as MacGYVER, which is the written trademark.

The hundreds (if not thousands) of people in the world who are named MacGyver would not be pleased if Paramount tried to tell them their name was copyrighted and couldn't be used . . . ! They already have to live with the jokes, after all.

As I recall, in many parts of the workld the SAK has come to be known as the "MacGyver Knife". So, from the point of view of the band, they named themselves after a slang term for a knife. The phrase has a nice ring to it -- there's a lilt and a strong internal rhythm, and a clear terminus to the sound.

I contacted this band and asked them how they came up with the name.

I got a reply from them today from the bands front man Mishal Pandie.

QUOTE (email from MacGyver Knife band)

in cape town, large parts of our community don't refer to swiss army pocket knives as that, but we call it a MacGyver knife, so our name came more from that, cos we regularly use to have to fix up our battered drumkit MacGyver style.
