I voted good on this near excellent episode. Nice introduction of Dr. Zito and Kate Murphy. Good episode.

This was very, very good. A couple of real psychos (they gave me ALMOST as many chills as Murdoc!) and Kate was a good character too, even though she gave Mac a really hard time. She was one of those cops who had probably been in the job too long and was suffering serious burnout. I liked the end, when Mac asks someone, "What about Murphy?" And Kate walks in and smiles and says, "Murphy's going to be just fine."

"Deadly Dreams"- excellent episode! This one is the episode that introduces Dr. Zito- who makes for a really cool arch villian for MacGyver to take on. Besides Murdoc and a select few others, he's one of the few villians to show up more than once (and even be portrayed by the same actor! that's almost something of a rarity in the MacGyver world) Yes, Dr. Zito surely was a pyschopath and his episodes are just as chilling and suspenseful as the Murdoc episodes. There's also the introduction of Kate Murphy, who goes on to make a few more apperances, making her somewhat of a recurring character. I liked seeing MacGyver put the clues together too- which is something he had to do a lot in both Dr. Zito episodes. And it was a pretty action packed type episode too. I voted excellent for this one!

Great episode with the creepy Dr. Zito. I rated it good, as I like "Lesson in Evil" just a little bit better.

not one of my favorites, but a good ep. i like how MacGyver puts the pieces together to solve the whole thing and he kinda shows dr.zito he is intellectually superior. also has a funny scene in the begining when mac is testing out his "cutters" in the police parking garage and the one fails to explode. mac kicks the beam and hurts his foot. and pete starts laughing. i bust up everytime i see that scene.

Perhaps they could've used Anthony Hopkins in a cameo role as Hannibal Lecter. This episode was loosely based the book of Silence of the Lambs a few years before the movie came out.

Yeah, I kind of thought this episode was a take on the whole Silence of the Lambs phenomenon...very good! I'd say Zito is so frightening simply because he is so calm, cool, and detached about everything he does. A wild, gun toting maniac is dangerous and scary enough, to be sure, but when a guy is calm and collected about killing...ooo! Just chilling!
I thought Murphy was a little too tough on MacGyver, but burnout does appear to be a good explanation for that. Maybe she also secretly likes him and doesn't know how to express it!

And that "satan sporn" voice of his.

Nothing better then the calm cool lunatic. Zito the devil himself. They should've made an episode about his killings and how his victims looked like in his cellar.

Good episode! I loved watching Mac figure out the clues. Is it any wonder Murphy was so out of sorts? Trying to get into the mind of someone who is insane and knows it, but is so calculated in his "normalcy"....creepy. Gives me the shivers.

yea this episode was good.
A police station setting isnt the best place to be and there was a lot of frustration in that station especially when Mac was trying his new technology.
I think Mac actually said at one point 'ok thats it, im outta here' so i dont think he really enjoyed that particular assignment.
But yes it was good the way he worked out the riddle and solved the crime to save officer Murphy from the fire...

I voted good but I'm starting to think I should have gone with just okay. There's so many things that bug me about this episode.
One of them is Murphy. For a seasoned Lt. she sure does have a lot of public meltdowns. I can understand the stress and burnout but you'd think she'd try and hide that from her coworkers.
There's the scene when Mac shows up at the hospital. He holds up his badge and the orderly doesn't even look at it... just opens the door. I don't know if it's Mac, more likely Rick, that's standing there holding the badge with a look like 'what the hell am I holding this badge for?'
Then in the holding area, the orderly has taken the phone to Zito and they have some banter. Instead of just handing the phone thru the bars (they're certainly wide enough) he walks over and puts it thru the little bar window. I guess you could argue that's what he is supposed to do due to protocol or something, but it just looks funny.
Then THEN Zito stands there and has a conversation with the escapee and MacGyver couldn’t hear it?? He was only 10-12 feet away and Zito wasn’t whispering. When he turns around and MacGyver is talking to the orderly you can hear him just as plain as day from Zito’s perspective. So what the….?
And the last one I can think of is when they get to the warehouse and they’ve gotten in without setting off the gas, MacGyver tells them to leave the door open so it can air out. They do… kinda… about 8 inches, and a few minutes later he sets off flashpoints!!!

good catch i always wondered about whether the nurse could here him talking to his "lawyer" as he was in the next room and he was talking with a regular voice. i never even thought about him using the cutters in the propane filled room.

As soon as Zito was introduced he was a villain to remember. Where as Murdoc actually has compassion at times (his sister), Zito is completely psychotic and never changes his expression. This was an excellently written thriller.
i would have enjoyed this ep more if i weren't reminded of silence of the lambs everytime they showed zito. sooo hannibal lecter! i feel kinda disappointed with this lack of creativity, imo. were the writers running out of ideas?

So it wasn't copying, it was creating.
interesting trivia. thanks.
i still feel the same though. i saw silence of the lamb first. so it really bugs me. so it may have been inspired by the book. but i just wish that i saw this ep first and that i never saw silence of the lambs. but, this is my problem.

This is a strange episode for me, because it's so dark and disturbing! Also mentions things a bit hard ( Sexy shops, porno movies) for Mac's tv show! I was a child when I saw this episode the first time, and I was i little bit shocked... Now it all just makes me smile...

Saw it for the first time today. Good episode but why does everyone think Dr. Zito was creepy? He was kinda boring if you ask me. Nothing much weird about him. I believe he will appear in some other episodes so I hope I get a bit more interested in his character. He didn't do it for me this time.

This is a very good--and creepy episode. It's really interesting, some of the MacGyver episodes are definitely aimed at a younger audience, but this one is clearly the opposite--I think it's one of the most "mature" episodes of the entire series, if I remember correctly.
I am, however, a bit conflicted when it comes to where the writers got their inspiration. I know that the movie "The Silence of the Lamb" was released in 1991, but the book was written a few years earlier. But isn't there sort of a "prequel" to "The Silence of the Lambs" as well... a movie, that is? Which was released before, in the mid 80's?
I can't for the life of mine recall the name of the movie right now, but I remember watching it *after* "The Silence of the Lambs" and there was another actor, not Anthony Hopkins, starring as Hannibal Lector... and if I recall things correctly he only had a minor role... though I could be wrong.
Anyway--the Zito kind of criminals are always the most creepy kind, in my opinion. He has such a manipulative voice... and that is part reason why I also very much question the security at the prison facilities... There are many other security flaws throughout this episode, but my main concern is, since they obviously were aware of his manipulative tendencies, why was he even allowed to speak to his co-prisoners openly? He should have been isolated, definitely.
It was really intriguing watching Mac solving the crime... putting the pieces together like a puzzle, eventually outwitting Zito...
However, there was *one* thing I *didn't* like about this episode... Lieutenant Murphy's general attitude. I know, even police officers are human beings, but Murphy just comes off as very emotionally unstable. I highly doubt that she would pass the requirements for her job. Or, if a police officer has suffered an emotional/physical trauma, there are always lots and lots of evaluations and tests that they have to undergo to make sure that they can handle their job. If they are in need of rehabilitation, they will be offered such.
It's sad, because she had some interesting qualities. Here's yet another female character that the writers didn't really succeed to convey... at least in my opinion.
Despite this, "Deadly Dreams" *is* an "Excellent" episode in my opinion.

I love the interactions between Zito and Mac. That scene with Zito sitting on the chair in the dark just watching Mac was REALLY creepy. There's a similar scene in the movie "Storm of the Century" where the villain is in a cell and when the lights go out, the camera focuses on the villain sitting in the dark and his eyes were glowing red. CREEPY!!!
Is it just me or does it seem the actor that plays Zito has a false eye?
I also love how Mac describes to Zito how he pulled everything off. It just goes to show how smart he really is and shouldn't be underestimated.
I also love the scene with Mac and Pete in the garage and Mac was trying to fix that door device. Poor Mac's foot. XD

Oh, that was so neat to read. Deadly Dreams was always one of my favorites. I thought the part with Mac and the toilet paper was really clever.

Yeah I like the toilet paper bit too - very shrewd. Probably not the best idea for the jail administrators to put Cross in the same cell right across from Zito once again after he's recaptured, but it does make for a good ending.

Wow, very nice. I was always more partial to Lesson In Evil but they are connected through Zito, Murphy and Mac's testimony. I think next time I see Deadly Dreams it'll be with different eyes. Interesting how he says it was not the intention of going dark. But it's nice to read to see what his inspiration was to write this episode.

I was certain that it was inspired by Silence of the Lambs(novel) .... still not entirely convinced that it was (in small part) not. That's just because the series has had a track record of cleverly implementing popular films de jour into several of their episodes. At the end of the day it all worked out and this episode certainly did particularly so!

I agree. The show had its own direction but at times veered in the direction of popular movies at the time.
Dr Zito to me was a Hannibal Lecter clone. And after the release of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989, Mac started going on adventures to find lost treasures starting off with the Holy Grail. After that he went in search for the treasure of Manco, the lost Amadeus, the Eye of Osiris & Atlantis.

Interesting, but wasn't that one finished? Mac's boat was damaged real good. Could be the same one though.
