Besides Murdoc and a select few others, he's one of the few villians to show up more than once (and even be portrayed by the same actor! that's almost something of a rarity in the MacGyver world) Yes, Dr. Zito surely was a pyschopath and his episodes are just as chilling and suspenseful as the Murdoc episodes. There's also the introduction of Kate Murphy, who goes on to make a few more apperances, making her somewhat of a recurring character. I liked seeing MacGyver put the clues together too- which is something he had to do a lot in both Dr. Zito episodes. And it was a pretty action packed type episode too. I voted excellent for this one! |

I thought Murphy was a little too tough on MacGyver, but burnout does appear to be a good explanation for that. Maybe she also secretly likes him and doesn't know how to express it! |

A police station setting isnt the best place to be and there was a lot of frustration in that station especially when Mac was trying his new technology.
I think Mac actually said at one point 'ok thats it, im outta here' so i dont think he really enjoyed that particular assignment.
But yes it was good the way he worked out the riddle and solved the crime to save officer Murphy from the fire...

One of them is Murphy. For a seasoned Lt. she sure does have a lot of public meltdowns. I can understand the stress and burnout but you'd think she'd try and hide that from her coworkers.
There's the scene when Mac shows up at the hospital. He holds up his badge and the orderly doesn't even look at it... just opens the door.  I don't know if it's Mac, more likely Rick, that's standing there holding the badge with a look like 'what the hell am I holding this badge for?'
Then in the holding area, the orderly has taken the phone to Zito and they have some banter. Instead of just handing the phone thru the bars (they're certainly wide enough) he walks over and puts it thru the little bar window.  I guess you could argue that's what he is supposed to do due to protocol or something, but it just looks funny.
Then THEN Zito stands there and has a conversation with the escapee and MacGyver couldn’t hear it??  He was only 10-12 feet away and Zito wasn’t whispering. When he turns around and MacGyver is talking to the orderly you can hear him just as plain as day from Zito’s perspective. So what the….?
And the last one I can think of is when they get to the warehouse and they’ve gotten in without setting off the gas, MacGyver tells them to leave the door open so it can air out. They do… kinda… about 8 inches, and a few minutes later he sets off flashpoints!!! |

You might be interested to note (as I was) that this episode was made 3 years before Silence of the Lambs. This episode aired in '89 Silence of the Lambs came out in '92. So it wasn't copying, it was creating.  |
interesting trivia. thanks. i still feel the same though. i saw silence of the lamb first. so it really bugs me.  so it may have been inspired by the book. but i just wish that i saw this ep first and that i never saw silence of the lambs. but, this is my problem.

This is a very good--and creepy episode. It's really interesting, some of the MacGyver episodes are definitely aimed at a younger audience, but this one is clearly the opposite--I think it's one of the most "mature" episodes of the entire series, if I remember correctly. I am, however, a bit conflicted when it comes to where the writers got their inspiration. I know that the movie "The Silence of the Lamb" was released in 1991, but the book was written a few years earlier. But isn't there sort of a "prequel" to "The Silence of the Lambs" as well... a movie, that is? Which was released before, in the mid 80's? I can't for the life of mine recall the name of the movie right now, but I remember watching it *after* "The Silence of the Lambs" and there was another actor, not Anthony Hopkins, starring as Hannibal Lector... and if I recall things correctly he only had a minor role... though I could be wrong. Anyway--the Zito kind of criminals are always the most creepy kind, in my opinion. He has such a manipulative voice... and that is part reason why I also very much question the security at the prison facilities... There are many other security flaws throughout this episode, but my main concern is, since they obviously were aware of his manipulative tendencies, why was he even allowed to speak to his co-prisoners openly? He should have been isolated, definitely.  It was really intriguing watching Mac solving the crime... putting the pieces together like a puzzle, eventually outwitting Zito... However, there was *one* thing I *didn't* like about this episode... Lieutenant Murphy's general attitude. I know, even police officers are human beings, but Murphy just comes off as very emotionally unstable. I highly doubt that she would pass the requirements for her job. Or, if a police officer has suffered an emotional/physical trauma, there are always lots and lots of evaluations and tests that they have to undergo to make sure that they can handle their job. If they are in need of rehabilitation, they will be offered such. It's sad, because she had some interesting qualities. Here's yet another female character that the writers didn't really succeed to convey... at least in my opinion. Despite this, "Deadly Dreams" *is* an "Excellent" episode in my opinion.
