'MacGyver': Meredith Eaton Teases Matty and Ethan's Complicated Team-Up -- Watch the Tense Reunion!

Matty Webber has her hands full with the return of her ex-husband, Ethan Raines, who's found himself in a heap of trouble.

On Friday's episode of MacGyver, titled "Treason + Heartbreak + Gum," Ethan reaches out to Matty for help when a criminal organization, ominously called the S-Company, kidnaps his wife and daughter. In exchange for their safe return, they demand a list of every CIA agent operating undercover for S-Company, forcing Matty to make an impossible decision: turn her back on her ex or help him get his family back.

"You're going to see Matty and Ethan reunited once again, but for a cause. You see Matty struggle with the personal nature of this [new mission]. Her unresolved feelings for Ethan and his for her -- all of that is in such conflict," MacGyver star Meredith Eaton, who plays Matty, tells ET.

"There's been such a past between them. Matty spent eight years watching over him from afar, hoping he'd come back and that they would reunite and pick up where they left off. And when her whole world came crashing down, she had to re-evaluate everything. She put her family on hold. She put everything on hold," she says. (In ET's exclusive sneak peek, Matty and Ethan's reunion is fraught with tension.) "Having Ethan re-emerge again is another painful reminder of what she doesn't have with him and how she has to put those feelings in her pocket in order to deal with what the immediate issue is, which is helping him and his family."

Eaton opened up about exploring another shade to her character, who runs the Phoenix Foundation, which Mac (Lucas Till) operates under.

"I'm always surprised with the different sides of Matty. She's one of the most multi-dimensional characters I've had the privilege to play," teases Eaton, 44. "In this particular episode, we delve more into her relationship with Ethan. She is very raw with him. We see a side of Matty we've never seen before because she shows her heart. She reveals some pretty painful feelings about how she felt when she learned that he had a family."

While it appears Matty and Ethan's story may be done -- for now, at least -- Eaton is less certain, saying things are still "very open-ended" between the former couple by the end of the hour. "When we think someone's gone, they might not be. She put him and his family into witness protection and we thought that was the end, but it wasn't," the Family Law star says. "When you have such deep interpersonal relationships, the characters could call on each other at any moment. I don't think there's a resolution to this -- and I don't know if there ever will be."

But there could very well be a connection between Matty and Oversight (Tate Donovan). As Eaton reveals, Friday's episode offers a step forward in that direction.

"There are some interesting things that could be on the horizon for Matty and Oversight, because he really steps up for her. It'd be great to see more of that in the future, because it's a very powerful and interesting relationship that we're just starting to see glimpses of," Eaton says, adding, "They have a long history that no one knows about yet. We haven't even touched upon that. We know Oversight believed in Matty to put her in charge of the Phoenix Foundation and oversee his son, but we don't know how they met or under what circumstances -- and there is a mutual respect. Now that we're seeing them together more, and him come through for her and her come through for him, it's an interesting relationship that's loaded with such great ingredients."

Looking ahead to next week's season three finale, which welcomes Peter Weller into the fold as the big bad, Mason (aka "evil MacGyver"), Eaton likened the hour to "Armageddon on steroids." (At press time, MacGyver had yet to be renewed for a fourth season.)

"The Phoenix is under siege. Everybody is in danger. It is one of the most exciting episodes we've ever shot," she previews, saying Weller "wreaks havoc on all of us, putting Mac and all of us in danger." "When I read the script, my jaw was on the floor. I thought, 'How can we do this? How are we going to pull this off? This is an action movie with popcorn falling on the floor because people are just shoving it in their mouths with their eyes wide open.' It's going to blow everybody's mind."

"There is a cliffhanger," Eaton confirms, "and when those credits flash, people are going to say, 'Nooo!' They're not going to want it to end. We have to have a season four. We have to resolve these issues!"

It's worth noting that this article had been edited, although it's not stated in the article itself.

I read it via my tablet and didn't make a full screenshot, but I've almost choked on the tea I was drinking while reading it. I was like "whut? what they've been smoking?"

For the rest of the article, I can't remember if they tampered with anything else. But since they did edit (probably after getting reprimanded), the rest should be approved now...

Still, you can't help but wonder if there was a misunderstanding or if they just spoilered the Season Finale since Episode 3x21 has been written and filmed as the Season Finale originally. They must have switched it during post-production. So it's possible this interview has been done a while ago, while still thinking tonight's episode was the season finale. Guess we'll see...

Interesting interview.

I got excited for a moment when I read her comments about next weeks final, but then I remembered that no matter how exciting the script is nearly they always manage to stuff it up in editing by trying to cram to much in to the allotted time.

So we'll have to wait and see I guess.

Personally I'd rather they focus on MacGyver and maybe explore his character more. I really don't care about Matty, or anyone elses past to be honest. I want to see MacGyver on adventures doing stuff, not hearing about who Matty was in love with.

I would have been interested in seeing more about MacGyver's past and Jack's past - and the people tied to their history.

But James MacGyver hasn't been around for Mac's childhood much, so we can't see many interesting flashbacks through him. Harry seems to be dead, so no point there either. George left, so no history on him with Riley, her mom, his dad and sister or his career steps.

To be honest, I'd rather be interested in meeting Bozer's family than hearing more about Ethan

MacGyver’s Meredith Eaton previews Matty’s emotional episode

This week’s MacGyver is tremendous for Matty, and Meredith Eaton spoke to Hidden Remote to preview the episode that means a lot for her character.

Tonight’s MacGyver episode shines the spotlight on Matilda “Matty” Webber, as the tenacious director of the Phoenix Foundation finds her personal and professional lives colliding. What does the CBS series have in store for her?

Meredith Eaton connected with Hidden Remote to give fans a preview of “Treason + Heartbreak + Gum” and discuss how MacGyver season 3 has explored more of her character than viewers have gotten to see before—a trend that will certainly continue here, as someone from Matty’s past is back in a big way.

Hidden Remote: This MacGyver episode brings back Matty’s ex-husband Ethan, who’s been a recurring part of this season. What was your reaction when you found out where their story is heading next?

Meredith Eaton: I love this storyline for many different reasons. Having an opportunity to show different layers of Matty’s personality is always enjoyable to me.

There has been such an evolution between the team, and this mission continues to exemplify how close Matty and Mac have become, and also Matty and Oversight.

You will see Matty struggling to try and resolve this relationship with someone who she really loves—her ex-husband—and then unearthing and reopening the wound all over again the moment she sees him. There is so much unresolved hurt and it never quite had the chance to settle.


HR: Matty and Ethan’s storyline gets even more complicated because of how MacGyver brings him back into the picture. How would you describe their relationship in this episode?

ME: I see their story as a Greek tragedy. A love that ended abruptly. The first time we see Ethan and when we see them together, it’s obvious that they would have had so much more ahead for them. Ethan describes getting lost in his undercover assignment and how it took on a life of its own, and I think a part of him still loves her and a part of her still loves him, but they know it could now never be.

Nonetheless Matty is willing to do things outside of what she would normally do in order to help Ethan and his family. It’s complicated and it’s raw, and it’s unresolved and sad, and the way Matty responds to it all truly shows Matty’s strength and power as a woman. How she forges on in the face of heartache in order to always try and do the right thing.


HR: What makes their dynamic great is the chemistry you have with Brendan Hines, who plays Ethan. How has it been working with him this season?

ME: Brendan is lot of fun and he has good instincts. He can also sing! We bonded rather quickly over our mutual love of dogs. Brendan brings a lot of charm and charisma to the role of Ethan. I really enjoy working with him.


HR: Matty tends to keep many things, including Ethan, quite private. Does this MacGyver story see her leaning more on Mac and the team, since the stakes are so high?

ME: Matty only reveals what she absolutely has to reveal. She approaches the team with a plea for help—but informs them that this is out of the realm of anything she has ever asked of them before, and that they are free to decline. They go out on a limb because they want to help Matty.


HR: What stands out to you from this episode? Anything fans should particularly watch for?

ME: This episode has it all. Lots of high action and heartache. We get a peek of a more vulnerable side of Matty, while watching her do what she is best at—running a mission and getting the job done. We also see a strengthened bond between Mac and Matty, and additionally Matty and Oversight.


HR: MacGyver season 3 has shown a lot more about Matty in general. How has it been for you to explore these other aspects of her character?

ME: This season was a journey that provided several opportunities to portray the different sides of Matty. This season in particular has been a season of maturation on all fronts in the face of many loses. All the while, she maintained her dignity and held steadfast to her desire to make the world a safer place, and to bring her team home from every mission safe and sound.

I immediately thought of the original series episode of the same name The plot sounds an awful lot like the season 1 finale though...

What are they waiting for the green light for the next season, the season finale ratings??? Now Meredith has to go around and try to get people excited about another season. The ratings aren't terrible. CBS was unlucky enough to have one eye, don't tell me they are blind in that one eye.

I'm pretty sure the finale ratings won't matter if the show gets renewed or not. They need to make these decisions beforehand; negotiating contracts for lead actors and stuff before they can announce a renewal.

I'm assuming they will do a "mass" announcement for the rest of the shows they will renew. Among others, there's still news missing about H50, SWAT, SEAL Team and Bull as well.

MacGyver Renewed for Season 4 at CBS, Adds 12 Monkeys Showrunner

Mac will be back, now that CBS has renewed MacGyver for Season 4.

Meanwhile, coming on board for Season 4 is 12 Monkeys‘ Terry Matalis, who will serve as co-showrunner alongside Peter M. “I Run Three CBS Dramas” Lenkov.

The Lucas Till-led drama was one of eight renewals announced Thursday, along with SEAL Team (for Season 3), S.W.A.T. (for Season 3), Madam Secretary (for Season 6), Bull (for Season 4) and Hawaii Five-0 (for Season 10), as well as long-running news programs 60 Minutes and 48 Hours.

The scripted series that remain in limbo at CBS include The Code, Fam, Happy Together, Life in Pieces, Man With a Plan, Murphy Brown and Ransom.

With one episode remaining in its third season, MacGyver is averaging a 0.7 demo rating along with 6.1 million total weekly viewers, down just 16 and 11 percent from its sophomore run. Among CBS’ 17 dramas, it ranks No. 13 in the demo (ahead of The Code, Madam Secretary, The Red Line and Ransom) and No. 10 in total audience.

The “Lenkoverse” procedural underwent a meaningful transition midway through Season 3, when special operative “Desi” Nguyen (played by Levy Tran) effectively replaced Jack Dalton as the team’s muscle, after original cast member George Eads abruptly parted ways with the Atlanta-based production.

To date, MacGyver has remained a part of CBS’ steady Friday drama line-up, leading into the Peter M. Lenkov-produced Hawaii Five-0 (with which it has crossed over) and then Blue Bloods (which regularly delivers the night’s biggest audience).

UPDATED: After spending a few months on the bubble, MacGyver will see a fourth season with Terry Matalas (12 Monkeys) joining as executive producer/co-showrunner. He replaces Craig O’Neill as co-showrunner alongside creator/executive producer/showrunner Peter Lenkov

Ostensibly, one would have to think this fourth season is the final season for the show. Get it to 88 episodes and syndication and all that and then replace it with some other CBS procedural (hey, maybe another Lenkov reboot show! There certainly aren't enough of them.).

The show's been very fortunate to be where it is on the Friday night lineup, as I'm not sure it'd have been strong enough to carry itself to renewals without tagging along with the established H5O and BB.

Not sure whether O'Neill left on his own accord, but if I had to hazard a guess, the showrunner switch is a last-ditch effort to boost the show's numbers by the network. Basically, "hey, we're taking you to syndication, and throwing you one more bone to improve."

If there's one thing I've learned over the years it's that showrunner changes rarely have great positive effects on a show. Maybe if Lenkov was actually around MacGyver more to give it a tighter focus...or better yet, if someone like Zlotoff had been in an advisory position, the show might have struck a chord with more fans of the OG.

And already he's making MacGruber jokes... not a good sign.

Congrats to the cast and crew, and fans. Some are not that lucky, and I myself is seeing the end of my fave shows on CBS

Hopefully Mac doesn't end in a weird, & gut punching emotional way the original ended. That show had a lot more left in it imo

MacGyver will continue if it scores great syndication and streaming deals. How else to explain Madame Secretary. Also Elementary the past 2 years. If a show makes money it gets another year. As for being fortunate for its time period, it has no strong lead-in and is the only Friday show with lots of competition. Blue Bloods is the only scripted show at 10. Put it somewhere else on the schedule to see if it can maintain its numbers.

If I remember correctly, O'Neill just signed an overall multi-year-deal with CBS last year.

So I'm assuming they commandeered him off to develop another project for them... maybe one where he is main showrunner?

But of course, they might have planned to nudge the reboot into a different direction to get the show more than what's needed for syndication - actually, they have done so already for Season 3. They pulled Producer David Slack last year and added an Ex-Scorpion Producer. Now they're pulling O'Neill. This season already felt different to me, so Season 4 might change again.

We love her down to earth personality and her support for small businesses! She shares what motivates her, her experience on MacGyver and tips for youth at MACLA'S DMCStudio who want to be in creative industries.

The Coffeehouse Invite: Hey Levy! It was so great to meet you at the Berryessa Art and Wine Festival. We're so excited to have you on the blog. Tell us what you've been up.

Levy Tran: Well I just got off of season 3 of MacGyver and have been back waiting tables. I'll go back to Atlanta to shoot season 4 in a month... so basically, I've been packing and moving boxes in the morning and waiting tables at night. Also working out in between and playing with my pup!

The Coffeehouse Invite: What did you dream of being as a child? When did you know you wanted to be an actress?

I dreamed of being of being a mother. Always have and I still dream of becoming a mother. I never really knew I wanted to act, but I do remember watching Kung Fu movies with my family as a kid. I remember watching the actors, and wanting to do what they were doing. I thought it was just the coolest thing and here I am now, kicking ass on TV.

The Coffeehouse Invite: What inspires the work you do?

Levy Tran: Seeing people work hard inspires me. My parents inspire me.

The Coffeehouse Invite: What is your favorite song to keep you motivated?

Levy Tran: Anything from Deftones.

The Coffeehouse Invite: What is an obstacle you have faced pursuing your career and how did you overcome it?

Levy Tran: Probably starting late in the game of acting. When I arrived in Los Angeles, I was already 27 with no experience and zero credits on my resume. I was nervous and scared. I doubted myself a lot because everyone else who was acting had done it since they were kids. But I'm a firm believer in "you're never too old to start anything new." As long as you work hard, good things will unfold.

The Coffeehouse Invite: We work with youth from underserved neighborhoods at MACLA's DMCStudio (Digital Media Arts) in San Jose, Ca. Many of them are interested in creative pursuits such as film, photography, music and acting. What are 3 tips of advice would you give our youth to motivate them to pursue their dreams?

> Do what makes you happy. Pursue what brings you joy. Whatever it is that gets you up in the morning...do that and do it unapologetically.
> Don't be afraid of criticism. It's what strengthens you. You can only learn from *censored*ing up. If you've never made a mistake, you're not learning; you're not progressing.
> Practice, practice, practice. Whatever it is you want to pursue, dive into it. Read books about it. Talk to people in the industry. Go to the events. Immerse yourself in it.

The Coffeehouse Invite: Congrats on the CBS Series, MacGyver! Desi Nguyen is a bad ass character in MacGyver, what drew you to her role?

Levy Tran: It's funny people ask this question. A lot. Starting off as a new actor, you don't get much say in what roles you can audition for. You audition for everything. I just made sure I knew who she was walking into the audition room. And with the opportunity of being able to audition for it and my preparation, I was offered the job. And you don't turn down a role like this. She IS a badass!

The Coffeehouse Invite: What are some memorable moments you've had while filming on set?

Levy Tran: Building friendships and learning about the cast and crew.
