The producers determined it would be impossible for Dana to continue his role, yet RDA said Pete is a vital role and there for suggested that Dana's disease would be incorporated in the show. Big respect to RDA for sticking with Dana through this ordeal.

Yet you make me question a few things since I have read once that it was earlier than season 5 it started. I read one time it started around The Invisible Killer and than slowly he became blind. On the other hand I figured it might explain the six episode absence in season 6. But that might as well and most likely be through the progress of the glaucoma.

As nice as that makes RDA sound, I actually question it.

I find it very surprising that it's never been mentioned... EVER, by anyone before now.

It also seems at odds with Dana's own recollection of the producers telling him "The fact that you are losing your eyesight does not mean you have forgotten how to act" as recounted by Dana himself in his 1991 speech to the National Federation of the Blind.

I feel pretty certain that the news stories etc which did the rounds about Dana going blind at the time would have included that information somewhere along the line.

Could be right though. On the other hand, it's been such a quest to find current interviews and to learn about the works behind the scenes and what RDA has to say about it. I just figured it was nice post and wanted to share.

But it would still be interesting to know where they got the info from though because it goes against everything else we've heard. Of coarse they're always going to make themselves look good I guess and not admit that they wanted to ditch him as soon as they thought he couldn't do the job any more.

True. If there was something very noticeable about the crew, it was like they were all part Mac inside. So it might be indeed very unlikely they would try to get rid of a main character that way.
