I found this video on youtube that finally explained that little hole in the SAK awl.

Using the inner strands of parachute cord or dental floss you could do some worthy work in the field.

The down side is the awl punches crude oversized holes, too large for anything that you might use as thread to fill. Imagine Frankenstein and you have a good idea of what to expect. I will only use mine for stitching in a emergency or for something disposable. No matter what I am glad the I have it as a option. I can always use it to punch holes that can be laced up with wire. Any sewing I want to last, I do with one of the needles in my fix it kit. You can MacGyver a lot of things but a sewing needle isn't one of the easy ones. It can be done with a hammer, anvil, pliers, files, and sandpaper, but if you value your time buy it, don't make it.

It is certainly interesting to see the sewing awl used, but I'm with Scorpion Regent in thinking that if you have access to them the correct tools make life easier. For 'large scale' sewing I have two prized possessions that appeared from a sewing box I inherited from my grandmother, These are two slightly curved sail-makers needles with elliptical shaped head and huge eyes that even take thin string, they are really old high quality tools and have been used for all sorts of jobs. They are especially good for stitching up plastic garden netting with string to make fruit tree covers to keep off the birds.

I agree with that, having done it with various SAK's over the years. The right tool for the right job, but I have to say it's a real treat Mac'ing it with a SAK!! biggrin.gif
