Not really, but one of the reasons I love chemistry is because it seems like every time my prof does one of his “demos” in class, it reminds me of something from MacGyver. Like the time he filled an old coffee can with methane, and then held a lit match in front of a small hole in the side. Can I say, bamboo bomb?

And today I think I figured out what Mac used in High Control to make that pasty stuff that was supposed to blow up when the bad guy stepped on it. My prof mixed up this mixture, spread it out on a table and let it dry- then touched it. BOOM! (And seeing how today was the last day of classes, I thought that was a nice way to end the semester)

But then he said that stuff like this is fun, but really has no purpose, and I was sitting there thinking, ‘have you never heard of MacGyver?!’

Touch powder - yep is fun, but also quite dangerous, and I think in a lot of places actually illegal because it is an explosive.

I remember one of my high school science teachers letting us spend a lunchtime in the lab making touch powered, but he was also very specific in telling us that we weren't suppose to make it because its an explosive and that he would deny all knowledge of us being there if anything happened.

Ah, chemistry..the class that nearly kept me from graduating high school.

Oh the memories: Chemically induced nosebleeds, ill-fitting goggles, memorizing the Periodic Table, the little freshman who had a crush on me...oh, and then there's the time the teacher threw a roll of masking tape at my head (he was aiming for the kid behind me, but he kinda missed.) dry.gif

So glad it's over.

Truth is, if I were in a MacGyver-ish situation which required me to use basic chemistry, I would die. I don't remember a thing from chemistry except that Potassium ignites when it touches water...and since I'm a musician, I'm not really sure how relevant that is to my life. hmm.bmp

I never stepped into a lab until university...It's very sad. sad.gif

Because of MacGyver I decided to take two years of Chemistry, one normal and one advanced, and it's great. My teacher looks like Mark Twain crossed with Sam Elliot and he's a hilarious guy. I'm one of like 8 people in the class, and every week we have to solve chemistry problems with given materials. It's like a MacGyver pop quiz every Wednesday.

Because of Mac I was super excited to take chemistry in high school.

But then came my teacher, Mr Coon, and all hopes of loving chemistry were dashed. He was the most boring man on earth. He was a short, pudgy, balding man who wore khakis and a striped polo everyday. He stood in the exact same spot (the corner of the lab table) and talked in a monotone while twirling a pen in his hand. He also randomly paused mid sentence.

The only labs we ever did was weight something, heat it, weigh it again, let it cool and weigh it again.

I struggle to get D's and C's in the class and had to try not to fall asleep every day. The room was freezing cold. We all just sat there and shivered.

Then the last quarter of the year, I moved and switched high schools. My new chemistry teacher was AWESOME. She moved around the room, did demos and spoke with excitement. For our lab on freezing points we made ice cream. My grades rose to B's. I am sure I could have gotten an A if I had not missed out on so much of the fundamentals from the first 3/4 of the year.

Didn't take physic until college, and that professor was also extremely boring, sat in chair the entire class and wore the exact same clothes everyday (and wore slippers) but made these occasional statements where you just thought, this guy is a little wacko.

So the smart part I really took form Mac was the love of nature and the environment. I got my B.A. in Environmental Studies a M.S in Outdoor Teacher Education and have work teaching kids and adults about nature, the environment and outdoor sports like backpacking.

My science teacher is a lot of fun, and is also a MacGyver fan. Actually she was the first one to find out about my Mac obsession, when she asked me if I was a MacGyver fan, for the first time in my life, I answered yes. The rest is history... biggrin.gif
Anyway, she said he was a very good scientist, but she never does anything related to him or mentions him in class... sad.gif
I became obsessed half way through last year, on my half yearly I got a B in science, on my yearly I got an A.
Maybe it's a coincidence but Mac probably did help. laugh.gif
